surprised Brady Quinn hasn't been brought up yet, he has gotten a lot of love on this board in the previous off-seasons
hey Tebow is available!!!! Actually not going to comment on the cut players, a lot of them I have no idea who they are. I will say regarding Idzik, as far as I'm concerned this year doesn't count. He came in late in the draft process and had to go with the scouting department with the previous regime in place and their scouting philosophy. Yes he could change the focus but not who the scouts were scouting, what they were scouting for, or the focus of the scouting and evaluation process. Though I think this draft was acceptable overall its' still not a draft I'll grade him on. He came in to a team who's salary cap was a train wreck over invested in a number of seriously underperforming players, some of whom are gone others who will be gone. The cap left him with little leverage with Revis and little option but to trade him despite little leverage. So I won't form any opinion on Idzik save for this one, I love his focus on youth this year rather than bringing in a bunch of discount veteran talent on their last legs, yes there were a couple of those that were given chances but they were cut or retired. The grading process on Idzik will begin next year, but as far as I'm concerned he should have at least 4-5 seasons before any real opinion starts to form on him....unless he makes some real boneheaded contract moves.
Great post. Those people that are already criticizing Idzik are just trying to start shit and would be critical of him no matter what the situation is.
Mesko made a little over 500k last year and was scheduled to make $1.32 million this year. Rookie Ryan Allen (La Tech) will be making the NFL minimum 405k this year - that's almost a million bucks saved on your punter alone and probably why NE went that route. Mesko's stats in 2012 were not appreciablly different (i.e. better) than Malone. And fwiw, Allen's was a back-to-back Ray Guy Award winner in 2011 & 2012 as college football's top punter.
FWIW, according to profootballfocus.com Zolton blew in preseason and got smoked by the other punter. I'd be shocked if we don't bring in a WR or 2. Maybe people who suggested Braylon would be back after week 1 were correct.
I know its early to evaluate but how can you knock his draft and actually free agents. Garay and Edwards were beat out in camp by younger players that's a good thing. Where else did we whiff in free agency. As far as draft right now I am looking at milner, Richardson, Geno Smith, Winters, Bell, a 7th round full back - or starting or atleast being big contributors. Snacks was kept and looks great, Spadola was a undrafted signing who I think can be a diamond in the rough. This draft looks like it has serious potential.
I think Braylon is someone who definitely pops back on the screen next week. Much like we did with Coles a couple years ago. We know that 4 qbs will not be kept on this team- that's a spot right there
No way did Mesko blow in preseason nor get smoked. Mesko outkicked the rookie in 3 of the 4 preseason games. The kid kicked good enough so they went with the cheaper option.
Agreed about Mesko...he's be an upgrade. Also, I'd look into Jake Ballard as well. I think he rounds into shape over the next couple weeks off his injury last year and he would be a significant upgrade as a 3rd tight end.
Great post. Agree 100%. I read some really crazy, premature and reactive comments relating to Idzik so far and mostly stemming from generic dislike as opposed to facts. Some "so called" Jet fans will trash him if a free agent is released. Some will say damned another wasted pick if a rookie is let go, so basically they would expect that every move he makes remains. So much for keeping the best 53. I thought the ideal plan is to bring in as much talent in as cheaply as you can, develop from within with youth wherever possible and the best 53 remain. The rest are casualties. The no stone unturned works for me. So far he has been true to form. No one is sacred.
Didn't they already sign Alex Green, Ben Ijalana and Scott Soloman? I don't know how many more you think they can sign.
he could not beat out tebow in denver! but, the jets have brought him in. now, some of you can get a better sense of why guys like champ are so down on this team. waiting 44 years and more to see another trophy tends to turn you over to the darkside.:drunk:
Any thoughts of signing Leon Washington. It could be an upgrade on returns. I watched part of their final Pre-season game. He had one very good return but (not butt) fumbled on another return. I think they decided to keep LaGarrette Blount as their return man and in their running back mix. Btw one guy the announcer talked about a lot was George Winn an UFA from the Cincy Bearcats who had a very good pre-season. He was released by Belichick and not signed to the PS. I think Winn had been in Texans camp before signing with the Patriots. I don't think he so far has signed with anyone. Could be a good candidate for our PS esp since we play New England next week and he knows all of their playbook.
He knew this when he took the job. That being said, Idzik needs o hit on these "dice rolls". The jets were in a difficult place cap wise for, insert whatever reason you'd like, but Johnny I knew this. We are in a win now NFL, no if ands or butts about it. Keep Rollin, Rollin, Rollin...
