I don't really like the Tyler pick, but if they got Hughes and Irons in round 2 (both of whom I consider solid late first round talents) I would be ecstatic.
i dont understand why mocks have us drafting irons, we already have him! obviously irons and washington are different builds and leons more finnese. but we need a big strong facemask breaker to compliment leon. i want to go o-line early and take someone like dwayne wright in the 4th.
But he does not have the strength to go through bigger OL, and he doesn't have the speed to run around them. He starred against college OT's, but the big, more athletic ones will be able to catch him coming of the corner, like the 19 and 20 year olds couldn't. Levi Brown is not that agile, and he was still able to beat Woodley to the corner, and absolutely demolish him. I would put many 3-4 tweeners in front of him (Moss, Spencer, Moses, etc.). He's not big enough to be a superstar in the NFL, and only has a good chance to be a dependable starter, putting him at least in the 2nd round and possibly in the 3rd at this point and time. But hell, if he comes in and has a good combine he could definitely jump back into the first, but I'll have to see it to believe it.
Woodley made a season running around OTs. He goes up against Long everyday in practice and saw Brown, Baker, and Thomas throughout the season. You point out Brown isn't that agile, yet he's projected as a LT at the next level and a Top 15, maybe Top 10 pick. I'd definately put Moss ahead of him(since he's the best 3-4 OLB in the draft) I think your right in putting Spencer and Moses ahead-since both will workout better- but I don't think that means he'll drop to the 3rd nor would I label him just as a "dependable" starter either It all depends on what teams are looking for out of the position... Don't be surprised if teams like the Patriots and Jets value him higher based on his ability to play both 4-3 DE, 3-4 OLB, AND 3-4 ILB; and his intangibles.
Considering Woodley lacks speed and got eaten up not only in the Senior Bowl practice but by Sam Baker against USC as well, I don't really find it suprising that he's projected as a 3rd rounder. A lot of times people get caught up with the people who play for the big programs, like with Troy Smith, and don't evaluate how their game will translate to the next level.
I like Tyler However, I'm not a big Kenny Irons fan. He dropped off severely his senior year. Michael Bush for the win
Woodley produced at a big program, and why doesn't his game translate to the next level? And Woodley got a sack on Sam Baker and was pressuring Booty most of the day.
Because there have been many guys who have produced at big programs and not been great in the NFL. College production is good to an extent, Woodley's physical tools are going to hold him back in the NFL. He's short, isn't the fasted guy, and not know how strong he is...I don't think he's stronger than the average NFL linemen. Those are serious knocks.
I think DL is the biggest need as many here do, and would like DL in the 1st as well in an ideal draft. However, I'm not sure that a good DL for us will be available at 25 without reaching. Thats why I'm beginning to think OLB at 25 and DL later. I'd like Moss or Spencer, but one of them might be available for the 2a pick. What does everyone think about trying to trade the 25 for something around 30ish and picking up a midround pick (we lost our 4th for Barlow)? I think you could probably still get one of those 2 OLBs. How about Mebane instead (later, not for the 1st pick)? I've heard him listed everywhere from mid 1st round to 3rd round.
Being short might hinder him as a DE, but he's projected to be moved to OLB. He's also built like a mack truck and has long arms proportionate to his body. And one can knock his speed because he won't run as fast as Spencer or Moses, but he's a quick-twitch athlete who is as quick off the ball as others. Obviously I'm in agreement to an extent about his athletic ability since I'm not labeling him a 1st rounder, but I think he's really have to bomb his workouts to go 3rd round.
If the draft fell that way I would do this: 1 - Patrick Willis, ILB, Ole Miss - Him and Vilma will be terrors in the middle of our 3-4. 2a - Anthony Gonzalez, WR, Ohio State - Perfect for the slot and can also returns punts. 2b - Lamarr Woodley - OLB, Michigan - Smart, strong, tough, can rush the passer and is stout enough to be good against the run. He replaces Hobson when he asks for too much money. I would be ecstatic with that draft. The only unfortunate part would be that we did not pickup an OL or DL.
Willis is an option, and also keep an eye on Posluszny. His name hasnt come up much on here, but he is a big time student of the game, can play both inside and outside LB, and has pretty good size for the 3-4. Poluszny maybe too much of a "Mangini guy" to pass up depending on who's available when we select.
I'm not a big Michael Bush fan. My main cause for concern is that he's 6-3. Will that hurt him at all on the next level? I have a feeling it could.
Everything else as in the Senior Bowl where he was injured? Because I hardly think getting 12 sacks in a season while going up against the likes of Joe Thomas, Levi Brown, Sam Baker, Ryan Harris, and Mike Otto bombing...
