My only criticism of this post is that on one hand you say Schotty's problem is situational playcalling, but on the other, you're crediting him with calling the run plays. Callahan developed the zone-blocking scheme, which has been intgeral to the success of the rushing attack. However, it's still Schotty's system, and it's still his game to call. I do credit Callahan with helping make this unit elite, but it's ridiculous to give no credit to Schotty at all. What you said is fair, and that's not the stance I take issue with. Otherwise, this post is completely reasonable. Schotty has damned himself often by making drive-killing, head-scratching playcalls. I've said that repeatedly this year. We've got people here saying things like we'd be better off with Hackett though, and those are the people that make Baby Revis cry cold tears in the manger. Great post.
^ its the passing plays i've had a big problem with, because there weren't enough high percentage throws. Slants, comebacks, passes to get beyond the chain and not much more. The training wheels should have been on him all year. 16 starts in college and some immaturity dictated what we've seen recently to be the gameplan all year. But that wasn't the case. That's my biggest problem. My and Rex's philosophy doesn't match what schotty loves to do.
If Sanchez develops the way I expect him to he will be the perfect QB to run Schottys system. I agree the gameplan of the last 6 weeks have been right for this season with a rookie QB but in order for us to take the next step and become legit SB contenders we are going to need to have our passing game catch up some to our running game. Jets fans need to look at the big picture. With the right QB Schottys system not only can work but can be prolific. The Jets fans calling for a Hackett like system(Cavanaugh only worse then Hackett) are the Jets fans that have no interest seeing the Jets win the SB in the near future.
And you definitely won't get any complaints from me. At least not at this point in Sanchez's career. Sanchez was brought in to run a big passing attack, and while he looked ready early on, he wasn't. It definitely took too long to rein it all in, and it's a criticism of Schotty I've made myself. However, he was trying to make Sanchez work within his system, rather than his system working to Sanchez. It was a mistake, and one that appears to have been fixed. Now I'm not saying this guy has bought himself a permanent get-outta-jail-free card, but he definitely deserves another year (and IMO, two) to see if Sanchez can grow within this system and make this a high-powered attack. Personally, I think it will all fall into place.
I agree. But that doesn't make Schotty's potential poor. It simply means he didn't adjust correctly to the fact that he was teaching yet another QB, and this time a rookie, a very complex system. The training wheels should have been on all year, but Sanchez had an amazing start. That set the bar too high and took a long time to shake off. I'm excited to see when Mark hits the ground running next year with a full offseason under his belt to study this system.
In spite of is more like it. And, yes, I think it has a LOT more to do with this Oline and Bill Callahan than it does Shotty.
I agree about his potential. And I have expressed that I'm willing to support him fully if these recent adjustments are permanent. If so, this offense will keep the ball with long drives and score just enough to have the defense keep the opposing offense at bay, having no time to score. Since Schotty wants to stay, we will just have to see if the new Schotty continues. I hope for the sake of the franchise it does. It'll make this team a perennial contender.
See, the thing is, I only want the "new" Schotty for a few more weeks. Just long enough to have us in a parade in a month. Next year, after Sanchez has absorbed the playbook in the offseason, and Edwards has attended mini camp, I want the "old" Schotty back. People will quickly forget the bumps in the road when we're flying in a high-powered passing offense.
He pretty much confirmed it. Hate to see Schotty go. He worked great with Mark. Today's play-calling is just a taste of what Schotty can bring if he's able to open his playbook. Hopefully we can find a good replacement
