This is truly unbelievable. We win the first three games and everybody's saying it's all because of the rookie QB, we lose and it's all Schotty's fault. Obviously both are responsible for the results on the O, both the good and the bad. It was not Schotty who threw the ball into Sharper's hands for a pick six, nor was it Schotty who held the ball for 20 fuckin' seconds in his own EZ. It is questionable if Schotty should have put #6 in that kind of a situation, but as we all remember, on the previous down we got stuffed for a no gain with TJ's run. A PA pass was a good call but the NO defense sniffed it out. Now the play calling, some of it was questionable, yes, but there was equally bad execution by our players on the field. Woody getting raped by Grant, WRs dropping balls on 3rd down, and the horrendous 3rd and 2 dive for no gain. Schotty made the right call going with the run, as the two previous 3rd down attempts failed going with the pass. But when the D stacks up 13 men in the box, I don't care rookie QB or not, you have to audible away from the HB dive. Schotty has been a good OC here in New York. He played to the strengths of the team back in 2006 when we had Noodle arm as our QB and a bunch of scrubs and unproven talent on the team. Remember, Coles as the Z, an unproven Cotchery as the X, McCraphands as the slot receiver, OL with two rookies and Anthony fucking Clement at RT, no running back and Chris Baker as our TE. We finnished 17th in passing, 20th in rushing and 18th in scoring with that O. We even made the playoffs. '07 was a dissaster of a year for the whole team, 'nuff said. In 2008 we brought Favre and Schotty had to simplify the playbook for the old man and he was hurt for the latter part of the season, plus we had Mangina holding Schotty back and cuffing him which was evident for example vs Chiefs and vs Jokeland. Now so far here in '09 Schotty has done a good job with a rookie QB, but as abyz pointed out, Sanchez' and Schotty have caught a couple of breaks in the first four games and without those we could be looking at a 2-2, or a 1-3 record. But the speculation goes two ways too, Sharper can't hold on to the pick six and we get at least a FG out of that drive, changing the development of game and possibly the outcome, therefore looking at a 4-0 record. All in all, like I said Schotty has done a good job his whole time here in New York and yesterdays game does not change that. Plus, I had to change my signature after reading this thread
+1, everything you said- I couldn't express my words, because I'm sick of the SOJ fans. Please, Please move on and bitch about some other team. We are in first place and our schedule is in our favor until the bye week.
That's fair enough. I actually thought he did a great job in '06 considering what he had to work with, but since then I haven't seen a whole lot. '07 was a wash and last year really left a bad taste in my mouth. When your QB can't throw downfield, is on a different page from the WRs and looks like he's given up you can't just pretend everything's ok and keep doing what you're doing. He worked wonders with noodlearm at the helm.. why couldn't he make adjustments when Favre was hurt?
As a Qb he has to feel the pressure and dump the ball. He had adequate time to unload a pass ten yards out of bounds. Nothing wrong with the pass call , just bad execution by the QB and Oline. If we handed off there times and gave the Saints a short field - everyone would be bitching today how passive the playcaling was.
Do you realize last year we really didn't see Shotty's offense. Last year was Favre's offense plain and simple, we threw out the playbook and virtually let Favre run the offense. The only year we really saw Shotty's O was his and Mangin's first year , after that he's been handcuffed by Mangni and last year by Favre . Everyone has to remember this was the guy who was Brees QB coach and the OC responsible for the high powered O in SD. We need to give him some time to really run his offense - which Rex seems willing to do . Also keep in mind we have a rookie QB and limited weapons at WR , it will get better - patience please.
That really doesn't make it any better. Schotty makes the calls on offense. Sure he dumbed down the playbook and let Favre do his thing, but he doesn't need Favre's approval to tweak the offensive scheme so it actually works.
Why do you think Shotty wanted to leave ?. He wasn't happy having his offensive plan ripped up 1 week before the season started . Favre was forced down his throat and the gameplans were dicatated by what Favre knew of the "dumbdowned" playbook . If you don't think favre really ran the offensive gameplans last year - then your being naive.
I just dont like the dink and dump football.... Thats pennington football and it straight up sucks..... stop running short screens all the time here and there is cool but to try that on a 3rd down to get a first down isnt good... To me this is where we need that 6'4 and better possession receiver whose on the outside and needs a jump ball..
Do you think that the top rbs in the league always get 4-5 yards on every carry? They do not. That does not mean that you simply go another direction. You need to get them the volume of carries to make things happen.. You cant give Thomas Jones the ball 10 times and expect him to break 25 yard runs on two of those carries, that is not the type of back he is.. The run wears down opponents, especially against a smaller D like NO.. Get him around 20 carries and if he is still averaging 2 YPC, yeah go another direction... The running game does not always "CLICK" right away.. It takes time for a. the offensive line to get cohesion b. The defense to wear down c. The back to get in sync with the o-line. You don't just go hey lets put jones in there for 10 carries and expect the world, this is not how a run game works.
Dude...the pick six was almost all coaching. Sanchez should have been checking Sharper as the number one read. and.... The route combination was horrid (now that could have been a mistake by one of the players, but ...). Two receivers on either side of Sharper (close enough to touch both guys)....ayfkm?
No. It's WINNING football. When you have a QB that can go down the field. Why do you think Vinny failed everywhere except here? He was always asked to go down the field on the outside. Parcells brought him here, in a controlled short passing game offense, with a running game, and going deep a little, when possible...The results..AFC championship game.
You don't roll out your rookie QB in your own end zone. The play call there should have been 2 step drop and get rid of the ball. Or a run. Plain and simple.
I would not have bitched about that type of play-calling.. I did not think we would beat the Saints in a shootout to begin with, so any type of attempt to slow the game down and wear down their smaller defense would be a smart plan IMO; execution is a different story.. You saw holes open up in the second half in the run game and I FIRMLY BELIEVE that if we had stuck with that plan from the start with Jones, Washington and Greene spelling Jones we would have run their defense ragged and shut their crowd up.. Then you see the pass game open up more.. People were saying that the Saints stacked the box and they did it a bit in the beginning, but that does not mean abandon the run.. Use the run to keep the blitzers guessing, a couple of stupid draws to Washington in some of those situations would have resulted in big plays..
I have seen a ton of really good running backs some who averaged much less than 4 YPC in a season. What seperates the really good from guys like Thomas Jones is they are either guys who consistently break runs for more than is there or they consistently get 1.2 or 2.2 yards when it's third and 1 or third and 2. They don't get consistently stopped short in short yardage situations.
He usually falls forward to me, no he does not have the second effort capabilities he once had, but if the holes are not there you cannot expect him to gain 5+ yards.. People mistake his patience for indifference.. And I think that 3rd and 1 8 out of 10 times he picks up the first.. I'd say a higher success rate than having Sanchez throw shotgun slants to blanketed #4 recievers.. If not, we can always use the seminole or put in Greene for the short yardage.. I do not believe he is done, but I do believe that if our run game is done, so is our season if we do not get it going here in the coming weeks. When you dont run effectively throughout a season, your defense ends up on the field for longer than it needs to be and when that happens your defense gets injured and worn out (see last year with Brett INTs down the stretch) .. You think we'd give up that many yards against the Saints running game if this game were closer? I don't.. If we ran the ball and kept them off the field and kept the score close they would still be trying to throw every down because thats their style.. Instead we ran binary risks and got the 0 end of the binary... AKA we screwed ourselves when we did not have to.. And just to add.. I am not willing to give up on the AFC's leading rusher from a season ago because he's simply not getting the touches he needs to be effective.. The TEN game was a different story, that was a strong front seven in bad weather...
Calls are always questioned when they don't work. What happens if he rolled out hit Keller out in the flat and the play goes for 50 yards - everyone would be saying what a great call to hit them right back after the pick six. Bottom line , Rex stated up front this team will be agressive. Sometimes when your agressive you get burned. Personally, I'd rather lose agressively than playing the ultra conserative panzy ass football of coaches past. And in addition many teams throw from their endzone , it was just poor execution by the rook and hopefully a valuable learning experience.
Maybe, they were trying to flood a zone to open up something underneath on the other side of the field. And to be honest Cotch looked open to me , Sanchez just needed to make the right read. There's probably many plays like that happen throughout the course of a game that never get any mention because either the QB makes the right read , or the result of the play didn't result in a pick six for the other team .
Yeah, i totally dig this...however, on those two third downs when we were down by 7 i think On one series: the saints stacked 9 and we RUN THE BALL On the second series: the saints stacked 9 and pulled 4 back on 3rd and 1 and we throw the ball Its fair to say we were outcoached. Both were key series and on the first one, TJ got stopped like he usually does for no gain and the pass Sanchez threw went straight through stuckeys hands
