It is puzzling. Here's the best that I can think of:

-Tannenbaum threatened to pull the offer if the Steelers tried to shop it.
-The Jets have an agreement with the Steelers for a draft-day trade
-There is another conditional pick that hasn't been reported
-There is a player attached to this trade that has yet to be reported
-There is something to the PFT rumors about Leon.

I have a feeling Rex Ryan had a lot to do with this move.

After looking up some numbers, Ryan knows Holmes far too well from his days in Baltimore. I mean he faced the guy twice a year for a few seasons and Holmes performed pretty well against the Ravens' defense:

In the 2008 season, Holmes scored a touchdown in three games (one in the playoffs) against the Ravens.

In 2007, Holmes had 8 receptions for 208 yards and 3 TDs in two games against the Ravens.

In 2006, as a rookie, Holmes had 8 catches for 121 yards against the Ravens.

So, that's six TDs in seven games versus Ryan's defense. I know he had something to do with this move.

(Here's another great stat that I noticed: Holmes has only lost one fumble in four seasons.)

I just remembered that we're playing the Steelers this season. That game just got 5x more fun.

This could be it. No one's denied that rumor yet.

Leon has to sign his tender to be traded, so they could be working some things out with Keels and Washington.

This deal may not be finalized. Hopefully the Jets will pick up a 6th or a 7th rounder.

Yeah, I suppose there are several possible explanations:
    1. The Steelers were, as you suggested, impulsive and accepted the first, initial offer which came from the Jets (although, judging by their FO's prowess the past decade, I don't know if I buy into that).
    2. Perhaps other teams stalled their decisions/options in lieu of their Draft results, whereas the Jets made a final decision before any other team.
    3. Maybe there's more (going to the Steelers) in this deal than we currently know.
    4. Lastly (I'm not sure how Trades ultimately work), is it possible the player being trade (i.e. Holmes) has input in where/what team he gets traded to?

Yeah, without either of the two teams officially announcing anything, this looks a little too good to be true. I'm waiting for the official announcements before I celebrate too much. I don't really see the FO and coaching staff being cool with trading away running backs for wide receivers right now, but I'm wary.

The more I ponder it, the more I'm leaning towards this.

Didn't Fast Willie sign somewhere else? If he did, it'd make sense for the Steelers to wanna replace him with another fast, dynamic player like Leon. And since that would mean a swappage of players, it's not out of the question for two (SB contender) teams to make that kinda trade within the Conference -- player-for-player, each being dynamic and fitting to the other team's need.

Honestly, if Leon is included in this deal, I still wouldn't mind because I think Holmes is the more valuable player (esp if there's way to retain both Braylon and him).

With Greene and Tomlinson in the backfield, we can afford to trade Leon and search for his replacement; a WR like Holmes isn't as easy/likely to find.

If it's Leon, I'm guessing that our second rounder is going to be a HB.

LOL..what a fuckin mistake. He is already in for a 4 game ban for substance abuse. Maybe they will hit him up for the rest of the year too depending on the outcome of that Florida lawsuit. Seeing as he only has one year left on his contract he may never see the field..nice move Tannenbaum.

And people here worried about Marshall?

Jahvid Best or Dexter McCluster, most likely.

I'd rather take a powerful runner...but I think the coaching staff will want a speedster to develop behind LT.

Too good to be true?! Really, man?

Santonio Holmes > Leon Washington plus a 5th rounder

...and if these rumors are true and posters start crying about losing a third string running back coming off of a serious injury, then I'll won't stop until I destroy each and every one of you Leon Lovers. Open your eyes. Leon Washington became expendable the day LaDainian Tomlinson signed his contract with this team.

We just got a proven #1 receiver for a 5th round pick. Don't complain.

I'd rather have someone like Gerhart, Mordesty or Tate but if they want to develop a player more like Loen, then I'd prefer McCluster.
Which one would piss you off more?

I agree its still a good deal, but ya cant blame people for complaining if they found out that the deal went froma 5th round pick, to a 2nd and 5th. (as far as im concerned all leon is is a 2nd round pick)

But I honestly dont think thats the case

Has anyone signed Leon Washington to an offer sheet? No, so he's not worth a second round pick...especially coming off of a serious injury.

The Jets ripped off the Steelers even if Washington is included in this deal.

This trade is a win/win on several fronts.

Obviously Holmes is a very talented player with the potential to draw coverage and make big players for a 5th round pick. If he has a bad year, the Jets cut him loose, and lose very little. If he has a good year not only will the Jets benefit from the production, but if they can't afford to resign him they will probably get a least what they traded for him (5th round comp pick).

What I haven't seen mentioned is the win factor. The Jets play the Steelers this year. Clearly Holmes was the Steelers #1 receiver and his absence on the Steelers offense very well could be the difference that gives the Jets a win. Even if he contributes nothing to the Jets via his playmaking abilities, its almost worth trading a 5th round draft pick for a conference win, especially against one of the stronger perennial wildcard contenders.

    Ok then its a 3rd and 5th.

I agree im VERY glad we got him, but obviously anyone would prefer us giving up less . So having to give up more SHOULD be a disappointment. That said I agree that people shouldnt be upset that they have to say goodbye to Leon for the future of our offense.

Jahvid Best is so dangerous though. I know he's suffered a lot of injuries, but he's so damn good.

Everyone on this board knows I want Ryan Mathews, but he won't be there.

Best is the next 'best' thing after Spiller and Mathews.

If he actually thinks the Jets made a bad move, then I'm not pissed. I just feel incredibly sorry for him.

Haha, seriously, if people can't see that Holmes is more valuable than Leon, then that's just a shame (and I'm sure people will point to Leon's KR skills - which are damn good - but didn't Brad Smith return a 106 yard TD against the SB Runner-Up Colts this past season?)

This prolly belongs in the Draft Forum (and if there's a good thread about it already, just link me), but since you mentioned it, do you have anything against drafting McCluster? I LOVE watching him play, and I think he's tough despite his somewhat diminutive size, and - from when I've heard him interviewed - he seems like he has a great head on his shoulders.
