Haha, that too. I was quoting Namath from the 60s. He said that while shooting pool, just saw it on NFL Network last week.

Awesome. I saw that too. I'd actually never seen that one before. Got a whole new perspective on Namath and the team. Loved Philbin. He seemed pretty bad ass.

Assuming Leading Role, Jets’ Sanchez Acts the Part

CORTLAND, N.Y. — On the first day of his second season, Mark Sanchez moved with swagger in his step and spoke with urgency in his voice. He looked stronger, sounded older, appeared more comfortable.

Gone were the wide eyes and youthful exuberance that defined his rookie season. The Jets are his team now, and Sanchez strutted around the facilities at SUNY Cortland aware of his increased importance.

“The team knows who their starter is and who their leader is, and it’s my job to take on that role and own that,” Sanchez said Monday. “It’s about making a big jump this year. It’s my turn to step up.”

For all the attention devoted to the holdout of the All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis, for all the HBO cameras lurking at training camp, for the Jets to reach the Super Bowl, Sanchez must grow into that role. He must transform from a rookie who tossed 20 interceptions, from a game manager instructed not to lose contests more than win them and be not just the face of the franchise but also an elite quarterback.

Revis remains the Jets’ best player. But one could argue, as tight end Dustin Keller did Monday, that Sanchez is their most important player, the key to fulfilling the grand expectations of this season.

“Nothing else is more important,” nose tackle Kris Jenkins said. “If Sanchez doesn’t get his job done, we’re in trouble.”

If that seems like an overblown assessment, consider that Sanchez threw at least two interceptions in five of the Jets’ seven regular-season losses in 2009. Then consider that his play — especially in regard to ball security — improved considerably in the playoffs. Then envision a Jets offense less reliant on the run, more balanced, more dangerous, more versatile.

Teammates already noticed a difference in Sanchez, even one day in. Linebacker Bart Scott described the way that Sanchez carried himself, that swagger and that confidence, as, “you can’t really tell him nothing’.”

Yet part of Sanchez’s locker room appeal remains his ability to visit the White House, present at the Tony Awards and date at least one Hollywood actress (all of which he did this off-season) and still endear himself to teammates. That, Jenkins said, spoke of Sanchez’s makeup, to his parents’ guidance, to his work ethic and drive.

Sanchez spent so much time rehabilitating his surgically repaired left knee at Jets headquarters this spring that Coach Rex Ryan said Sanchez seemed like an assistant coach.

“Sanchez is the man,” Jenkins said. “There’s no other way to put it. He does everything with style and intensity. He never came out and got bigger than his britches. He didn’t start acting all Hollywood. He still acts like a little surfer boy.”

In the playoffs last season, Sanchez threw only two interceptions in three games. He completed 80 percent of his passes against Cincinnati. He even led the Jets to the A.F.C. championship game, and his two touchdown strikes there against Indianapolis staked the Jets to a lead at halftime. In those games, receiver Braylon Edwards said, Sanchez transformed into a different player.

Sanchez enters training camp cemented as the starter, not competing for the job the way he was a year ago. Ryan even noted that Sanchez looked stronger compared with his shirtless GQ magazine photo spread last year.

Keller went through one individual workout with Sanchez in Southern California. Once was enough. Sanchez kept running, kept sprinting, kept working his abdominal muscles, and after 90 minutes, Keller admitted that he nearly vomited.

That workout came during an additional minicamp that Sanchez created recently, flying in several skill-position players. He put them up in a fancy resort, took some to the ESPYs and others to the All-Star home run derby in Anaheim, even made T-shirts with a log cabin design in front (to symbolize sleep-away camp, he said).

“At this point, we’re ahead of last year,” Keller said. “At this point last year, we didn’t know who our quarterback was. Mark is ready to lead now. That’s the biggest difference. There’s no reason we can’t be the best offense in the N.F.L.”

Sanchez drove here from New Jersey with Mark Brunell, the 39-year-old veteran the Jets signed recently to mentor the franchise quarterback. They talked about family and football, and Brunell even reached deep into his memory bank to describe for Sanchez his second season as a starter, with Jacksonville in 1996.

“It’s a whole different mentality,” Brunell said. “You know you’re the guy. You have a lot more confidence coming in. You have the opportunity to do something special and be part of something special.”

Sanchez helped seal the signing of running back LaDainian Tomlinson by dropping off a gift the morning of Tomlinson’s departure. He spent hours talking football with the offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer.

Teammates noticed, and Sanchez arrived at training camp a far different quarterback than the one who traveled here a year ago, as perhaps the Jets’ single-most-important piece.

“If we get a quarterback, we’ll be fine,” he said, smiling.

Yeah, Philbin looks like he'd still fuck some people up. Maynard was cool too, I never got a good sense of who he was before. Those old timers were no nonsense.

It was enlightening when Philbin talked about the money that Joe Namath was costing him by Joe throwing games away in the 1967 season. It was also funny how Philbin and Joe had different recollection on how Namath becam captain in the 1968 season.
