I guess what I'm saying is, once a thrown ball hits ANYONE (an offensive player, defensive player, or referee) the quarterback is no longer responsible for it. The QB is only responsible at the point of initial contact, after that it's an unassignable free ball, and while it will still be an INT if caught it will not be assigned negatively to the QB. It's very simple, I don't see why the NFL doesn't impose it.
So if a ball goes right through one defender's hands into another defender's hands that's not on the QB?
How can that have a serious impact on a QB's future?? You think coaches look at stats when evaluating players? They look at film.
Here's the thing about completion percentage and Sanchez. He's throwing everything in places where only his guy can get it. If he tried to squeeze more stuff in, he'd have a completion percentage near 65%, but he'd also have more INT's. That's how he's being coached and that's OK. That's what we need from him right now.
If you add the 15 drop passes in just 2 games as has been written, his percentage is 59.5% .... Close enough to 60% ... and there have been many more outright drops ... I'll take 55% and 8-2 any day
There were 8 dropped passes against Vikings in that heavy rain, which was the main factor I believe. Then there were atleast 7 other dropped passes in the Green Bay game NOT counting the two strip ints.
Sanchez is leading the NFL in passing yards the last 3 weeks anyway... but his completion percentage is scaring me
It's true, Sanchez recievers have dropped a whole mess of catchable balls on him this year. Maybe as much as 5 percent of his passes have been dropped when they should have been caught, and 5 percent can make a big difference in completion percentage rankings. If you add 5 percent to his percentage it would raise him as much as 12 or 13 spots in the rankings.
He's had 3 absolute duds in the completion percentage dept: 10-21 vs Balt, 21-44 vs Minnesota, 16-38 vs GB. In the other 7 games, he's 138/233 which is 59%. He still misses a open receivers more than he should but he's getting there.
Sanchez has pretty much grown in every other area of being a Quarterback. I heard on ESPN radio I believe that 2nd year QBs often struggle with completion %. I'm not too worried about it for the time being.
a tipped ball is most definitely on the QB. it means he missed his lane or he failed to get the ball over a LB and in front of a safety/DB. an 'accurate' QB worries about more than just hitting the receiver in the hands. he has to worry about NOT hitting a d-lineman or LB in the hands first. about half a QB's throws require him to drop the ball in over a LB, especially on screens
Uh huh... and when a ball is stripped away from a reciever that's on the QB too? Any number of things can cause a ball to be deflected from it's original path, including a tip from an offensive player. To put that all on the QB makes no sense at all. Again, unless the QB throws the ball directly to a defender it should not be credited and an INT in the QB's stats. It's still an INT, but not a direct INT, and not credited to the QB himself because it is not the result of poor decisionmaking but a random act.
On top of what was said above many times blockers are also assigned to create passing lanes. If the blocker doesn't do his job his assessment can jump up and tip the ball. Many things factor into every play. It's too easy to Blame just the QB.
Just a few stats that stand out to me: Pass plays over 25 yards Sanchez has 20.. good for 5th in the nfl behind Rivers, Orton, Eli and palmer Dropped passes The Jets have 16..
Sanchez reminds me of Brian Sipe....a guy who never put up great stats, would put you to sleep for 3 quarters, and then kill you in the 4th quarter. Similar build as I recall, too. But Rex is a bit heavier than Sam Rutigliano.....lol.
Sanchez is in his 2nd year. Let's not get crazy about the completion yet. He's still efficient, and he's clutch as hell.
