Honestly, I cant remember the last time I saw a Sanchez pass and said "Wow, that was a hell of a pass"... I remember watching Kaepernick vs the Bears in his 1st or 2nd NFL game and said that to myself about 3 or 4 times. Sanchez just doesnt have the "it" factor to make it as an NFL QB.
http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/jets/post/_/id/25690/ex-jets-we-want-sanchez Bolded the real Rex Ryan quote for Jeti. Interesting article here. Geno's got a lot to prove. We'll see. He'll either step up to the pressure, succomb to it, or he'll just be mediocre enough to confuse us further.
So after reading those quotes, it seems like the alums expect Sanchez to start solely off of experience. None of them gave him a ringing endorsement and basically just think he'll start because they havent seen more than two drives on Geno. Basically an unknown vs a proven poor commodity. Sounds about right.
I know I am about to pile on, but I can't ignore this post and the hypocrisy and inconsistencies between how you deal with statistics versus context and what is on paper versus what you see. You want to ignore "bad" statistics when it comes to Sanchez and you want to put things in context, including playoff wins and situations and surrounding personnel. But (and I'm not trying to hijack this thread) all you want to with Namath is cite career statistics and completely ignore tons of context - much of which you don't understand because you were not alive to see it and experience it. I agree that Sanchez deserves credit for those 4 playoff wins and you also have to consider that he played very well in both AFC Championship game losses. But the last of those games was over 2 1/2 years ago and Sanchez is just not getting better. In fact, he is getting worse. We can argue as to why that is. I think the Jets mishandled him throughout his career. But I can't ignore what I see now and that is a QB that is inaccurate, turnover prone, and incredibly inconsistent (from series to series, not even game to game). You just can't play in today's NFL and turn the ball over 25-30 times a season and miss open receivers. Barring some miracle, Sanchez will lose his job to Smith at some point between next Monday and the bye week. As for the other side of my point, you need to take a step back and realize that YOU need to put some context on Namath's career and not look only at statistics. Namath was one of the best QBs in football from 1966-1972. Period. He was a consistent winner during that period, he "got it done" when it mattered most in 1968, and he scared the daylights out of opposing defenses. His career stats take a beating when you "put them in context" and realize that from 1973 on Namath played with a broken body on a very bad team. Have you seen the personnel he was asked to play with? Have you analyzed his receivers from 73 on? What did you think of Eddie Bell, Rich Caster, and David Knight? Was Jerome Barkum a little green in his first few seasons? How much did it hurt to lose Riggins? How good was the OL he played behind in the mid 70's. Context is important. And you lose that context when you read numbers on a page and did not see the games with your own eyes. So just as you a justifiably ask for context when it comes to analyzing Sanchez - which is a fair point - you completely and utterly ignore it when it comes to Namath. The problem with Sanchez is that he has just run out of excuses at this point. He is ruined and incapable of success as a Jet and absent the big contract, would be somewhere else right now. He will be elsewhere next season because, even with the context of past success in big games and the bad OL play and slow receivers in 2011 and the lack of talent in 2012 and the lack of a true O coordinator until this season, it does not appear that he is salvageable and because a winning NFL team needs better QB play than he can provide.
You also have to remember that, in their day, a QB took time to develop and rookies rarely started. Today's NFL is different. And last time I checked, none of these ex-Jets gets a vote. I personally have no problem with Smith sitting until he is ready, but I don't think he is more than a few days to a month or two from reaching that point. We'll find out soon enough about both of them.
On a side note 15,000 post and still counting. Is this the longest, most discussed about thread in TGG history or what?
Bingo. The window is closing on Geno. Although we may see the Jets decide to give it another week, and play some starters in the Eagles game. Imagine the competition going down to the wire and Sanchez playing half 1 with Geno playing half 2? That would be entertaining, but realistically I think the starter will be named a couple days after the Giants game. Geno did have a good practice today. It's not over, but the Giants D will be a tough task indeed.
B This is what I thought when I saw the quotes. Most of those guys played in an era where rookie QB's sat and watched and for the most part the rookies who did not sit and watch had fairly disastrous periods of integrating into the NFL. The NFL rules and mindset have changed enough at this point that it is clearly in the interests of a team that has no QB to let the young guy play instead of going and getting a vet to let him sit for a year instead. That has been the rule of thumb since Ben Roethlisberger was forced into action by the injury early in his rookie season and the Steelers went 13-1 with him playing very well in a game manager's role. When you have a vet who is already on the roster and is a good QB and the rookie isn't ready then he sits for a bit, but even that circumstance has become exceedingly rare these days. Kurt Warner - Eli Manning just doesn't happen very often in today's NFL. What is confusing the Jets (and the fans) at this point is that the Jets do not have a veteran QB worthy of playing on the roster, however Sanchez was uncuttable this off-season and so he is still around. This confusion is actually very dangerous for the Jets rebuild chances at this point because they seem likely to have a bad season no matter who plays QB but they are going to lose precious development and evaluation time with their young QB because the guy who should not still be on the roster is hanging around and mucking up the works. Obviously it's a tough place for John Idzik and Rex Ryan to be in at this point because they have competing objectives over the short and long term here. Both of them really want to win in 2013, and don't let anything anybody says convince you otherwise. It's a wet dream for John Idzik to somehow get the Jets anywhere near that Met Life Super Bowl this year. It would be a huge feather in his cap and it would basically set him up as an NFL GM until he decided to retire. However he also must, absolutely must, rebuild the talent base on this team so that it is competitive over the long term as well. His job is to fix the Jets depth and talent issues and give the team the best chance to be competitive and sell well over the next several years not just in 2013. Rex Ryan on the other hand thinks he has to win this year and even if he thinks that's a low percentage chance he's going to be scrabbling for every little advantage he can get. If he thinks 8-8 is doable with Sanchez starting all 16 games and 6-10 is what Geno starting those games turns into he's going to go with Sanchez all the way. Even if it hurts the Jets chances to compete in 2014 and beyond. For Rex Ryan 2014 doesn't even exist right now. It's not in the plans at all. So you have two guys who both need different things for different reasons and that's where the Jets are going to find themselves in trouble if they don't watch out. The GM needs to right the ship over several years but always hoping this year is better than expected. The HC on the other hand needs this year at all costs. We don't know what's going on behind the scenes but it's important that the Jets get the best out of everybody here instead of having people held back by competing objectives.
How can the window possibly be closing on a rookie QB in mid August? If Sanchez is named the starter for game one, why couldn't Smith take over at any time after that????????????? The naming of the game one starter doesn't seal the deal for a 17 week NFL season. Come on people! This discussion is getting ridiculous.
Haha, yeah about two weeks ago. As if a starting QB change never happens after week one. Sanchez gets a chance to prove last year was an aberration. Chances are he can't prove it, and Geno gets his shot. If the Jets hand him the starting job after barely showing anything, it'd be a crazier move than bringing Tebow in - and starting him.
I get the feeling The Jets tried to take off the training wheels on a Geno before today and he was "brutal." So the let him run the #1 offense vs the scout team defense. This is why you can't take his numbers seriously, bcuz they are seriously misleading. Geno went 11-12 and a td but not against our starting defense. They are trying to build up his confidence bcuz after those 2 brutal practices his confidence must've taken a hit. He failed to get the offense to the line?? Marty obviously gave him an earful. Up until know I was pretty happy with Geno's progress, but putting together the last few practices and realizing he is not practicing against nfl defense, makes me doubt his progress. You'd think they would throw him to the sharks in practice so when he starts against the a Giants he'd be ready for the pressure. Maybe I'm thinking far outside the box?
In my opinion practice numbers are completely irrelevant. What matters is game-time and even then only to a certain extent. They aren't trying to win during games, nor in practice. They are trying to accomplish certain tasks like learning the playbook and work on touch-accuracy and timing. If Geno and Hill are trying to work on timing and he throws 3 INT's because he's specifically throwing to Hill every time during that drill, it's hardly fair to judge him for it. In a game he's not going to stare down Hill and try to hit him on the 25 yard out when the 7 yard curl is wide open.
Tweet Seth Walder Geno picked by Royce Adams in 7on7s. Moving well though. #nyj 2:19PM EDT From NY POSTs Mark Hale: That, followed his previous two practices — last Wednesday’s four-interception effort (labeled “brutal” by coach Rex Ryan) and Monday’s 1-for-6 performance with an interception. Smith worked with the starting offense and part of his production came against the SCOUT DEFENSE. Espn Rich Cimini: Smith displayed excellent accuracy in team drills, completing 11 of 12 passes. His best moment came on a gadget play, a 70-yard touchdown strike to a wide-open Stephen Hill. Smith had two hiccups. He FAILED to get the offense out of the HUDDLE AND to the line of SCRIMMAGE on time, receiving an earful from OC Marty Mornhinweg, who ordered a re-huddle. Espn Rich Cimini: A+ FOR DOUBLE A: ANTONIO ALLEN, competing with Jaiquawn Jarrett for the free-safety job, WORKED with the FIRST-TEAM DEFENSE. He was all over the field, MAKING TWO INTERCEPTIONS. If Allen had 2 picks and was on the starting defense, and Smith only threw a pick on 7 on 7. How does Allen have 2 picks with the starting defense is your claiming a Geno faced the starting defense??? When neither Mark or Geno threw picks in the 11 on 11 portion.
Also if you were following the tweets it was very obvious Geno was not playing against the starting defense. Like I mentioned before I think this might be done to build his confidence, due to previous "brutal" practices, or again maybe I'm reading things oit Of context. Anyhow that is why I can't trust these numbers from reporters. Also this is not ideally what you want from your starter, who is abt to make his debut. I hope Geno gets atleast the half, and lights it up, and I expect the same for Sanchez and GMac in their Quarter of action. Let's see... ------#### Update Tweet Seth Walder Worth noting first team offense played against 2nd team defense today. #nyj 3:11PM EDT So Geno faced the scout and 2nd defense.
Damn - the jags d is almost as good as our 2nd team too. Seriously though ... Just another reason why practice stats are stupid. There's always some situation they're working on. Geno need to prove he's ready against the Giants.
He isnt being attacked, his arguments are. He often makes sideways attacks at people he repilies to like "You dont know football!" Or "Fantasy Numbers!" Of course his own posts boiled down to illogical ESPNish nonsense like "Mark wins playoff games!"
Wilson, Luck, RGIII have proved shit. RGIII and Wilson had the best running games in the league. Luck had a good year for a rookie not great. Ever hear of Reggie Wayne? 7 They all have a lot to prove
