Thanks. Good read. No wonder Tannenbaum is gone now. So it is more than likely, almost 100% guaranteed, that Sanchez would not be on the roster right now if not for that money owed to him. Maybe a slight chance he is still on the roster making much less money, but doubtful.

It's easy to get carried away with stats like these when the sample is fairly small.

The Bears all-time biggest winner in a season is Rex Grossman. He won 13 games in the regular season in 2006 and then 2 more in the playoffs for 15 total.

Jim McMahon is next with 14 in 1985. His backup Steve Fuller went 4-1 when he was out in the regular season in 1985. The next year McMahon went 6-0 in the regular season and his backup Mike Tomczak went 7-0. Sometimes the defense and running game are just that good, that just about any semi-competent QB can get plugged in and you don't miss a beat.

It's not a coincidence in my opinion that a Ryan was running the defense on both the '85-86 Bears and the '09-10 Jets and they won bigger than they should have. Doing something very pressurized and fairly unique on defense will often set you up for great success.

Exactly. And he was no kind of starting NFL QB, the Bears just hadn't completely figured that out yet.

Having a really good QB makes everything much easier and raises the level of the team. Having a great defense and a strong running game lets you win without the QB. Whoever is taking snaps becomes "clutch" unless he throws picks at the wrong time in the playoffs. He's not going to be forced to do that though because the defense and running game are going to keep everything tight no matter who else is across the line of scrimmage.

Sanchez is better than Grossman. Much better. Not that that matters, but just saying.

Sanchez is not even close to being as good a QB as Grossman. Sanchez has all the downside and mistakes of Grossman or any of the worst mistake prone QBs in NFL history but he has none of the upsides of these QBs. Grossman can for brief times take over the game and throw the ball down the field into very tight windows something Sanchez cannot even come close to doing. Sanchez can only complete passes when there is a clean pocket and his receiver is wide open. He has no accuracy, a weak arm, almost always throws the ball late which has to often put receivers at risk and injured Jet receivers, no pocket presence, panics when under pressure, can only look at 1/3 of the field, He cannot throw outside the hashmarks, Is unable to throw a touch pass, Cannot throw to a RB with any accuracy, cannot understand or read defenses, cannot throw a receiver open, is soft, avoids hits by giving up on plays and is weak minded. What actually does Sanchez do well? Not even the most ardent Sanchez excuse maker has ever been able to answer this question.

Grossman at least has some upside to go along with his mistakes. He can throw out of the pocket like a real NFL QB and can get a hot in a Testaverde sort of way. Sanchez can only throw in non passing situations. He has shown only one attribute in 4 years and that is if a defense does not put a defender anywhere close to his receivers and leaves him a completely clean pocket he is capable of completing some of his passes, aka the Bils 1st game last year. The thing about Sanchez is even if you eliminated his turnovers he would still be terrible as he is incapable of throwing the ball down the field with any degree of accuracy. At his best he is a game manager that cannot manage the game.

I don't this is accurate. I think Sanchez is almost exactly what Grossman is. They both were ok with strong supporting casts and exposed when not supported.

Sanchez makes a few throws every season that make you just scratch your head and ask yourself where that throw is the other 99% of the time. Last year he had a TD pass into a crack a mouse couldn't get through that almost had the announcers criticizing him for the TD pass because they couldn't believe he'd tried to squeeze it in on the goal line.

They couldn't criticize the throw because he made it but they definitely sounded like they were looking for a way to do that anyway.

The fact we can debate whether Sanchez is better than Grossman speaks volumes. This is a definite reclamation project.

When you make the kind of pass he made regularly the announcers are like "now that was a great throw by so-and-so" because they've seen him do it often enough to know he wasn't making a mistake and just got lucky.

When you have Sanchez rep and you make that throw the applause is much more muted because it's accompanied by the realization that things could have just as easily gone the other way and been disastrous. (Again.)

I'm pretty sure the QB with the most wins in a single season is Testaverde who had 12 in 1998 and 13 if you include the playoffs. Sanchez had 11 in 2010 and would be tied at 13 wins if you include the playoffs.

I think the most Kenny ever had was 11 including the playoffs.

My main point was, the Bears and the Jets are similar in that their defenses were/are the strength of the team. This is by design as well. Neither team invested much on the offensive side of the ball and continued to stockpile defensive talent in the offseason. Both organizations hired defensive minded HC's.

IMO I think this is the formula for a championship team that does not have a "star" QB. Mark Sanchez is not a star QB, and that's ok. But the organization needs to give him some weapons to help make the offense not as offensive! With that investment, you will see Mark manage the game more an turn the ball over less. This is when he is at his best.

This might work for a given year but it's not sustainable over any period of time.

You have to have a good QB at some point if you want to be a consistent winner.

The Ravens won a Super Bowl in 2000 off of that great defense and a solid running game. Then they hit the wall when the defense couldn't repeat it's top 5 all-time performance and the QB play remained mediocre. Even having the running game become much stronger couldn't put them back over the top again.

You can get lucky on a championship without having a great QB. You cannot get lucky on a dynasty without having a great QB.

Lets just win one in this century first before we discuss dynasty. Mark Sanchez is a more than suitable QB if he is surround by at least adequate talent (news flash, 95% if QB's need quality skilled players). The jets have not addressed this issue. My hope is this year we have used up the line a but more with the additions if Colon, Petterman, Winters ect and Chris Ivory and Goodson provide a nice 1&2 punch. If that happens you will see Marks numbers improve substantially

He's not good enough though. The fact that you *can* win with a mediocre QB if everything else is close to dominant doesn't mean that you *will* win with a mediocre QB eventually if you just keep trying to put the pieces together around him.

The Ravens weren't a dynasty because their QB situation sucked. That was literally the only thing holding them back.

The Bears never built off that Super Bowl trip because their QB sucked. That was the thing holding them back.

The Jets had a very narrow window with Sanchez because they had all the other pieces together for a couple of seasons. They couldn't get over the hump in that window basically because Kris Jenkins got hurt, ending the really dominant defense, and because unfortunately Sanchez wasn't good enough.

The Bears went 13-3 with Rex Grossman. They never approached those numbers again with him because Rex Grossman wasn't the reason they went 13-3. He was the reason they didn't go 15-1 and win a Super Bowl.

No, the fact that Sanchez haters are trying to say Grossman is better, speaks volumes. My post said Sanchez was better, nothing to brag about, but just saying.

Sanchez supporters think he's better than every other bad QB in the league and only the elites are better.
