What? Darnold calls the shots. If this is truly about offset and all the other QBs have it Sam should be telling his agent to give in. The agent works for the player not the other way around
Matt Hasselbeck, who had Bates as a coach, just said on ESPN that if Darnold isn't in by the end of the weekend this will become a big deal, and put him noticeably behind in grasping the offense. Given that the other 3 QBs have accepted the offset language this is in my opinion totally Darnold's doing, and is just about the stupidest way imaginable to start his career in the NFL. He should tell his agent to get the deal done by 5 PM today, period. If he doesn't do that obviously all of the wonderful talk about how only the game and the team matter was just complete bullshit, and that to me is the real point. Sooner or later he's going to sign, but he'll have already shown what really matters to him, and that could poison his relationship with the fans right from the start. If you think that fans will forget this kind of thing, just take a look at the Revis retires thread. Darnold has a chance to become a folk hero in New York, and to screw that up because $30 million isn't enough for him if his career immediately flames out on the Jets is the height of stupidity.
Come on man. It couldn't by any clearer what's going on here. Jimmy Sexton is trying not to take his second loss on a high-profile rookie contract.
Good for Jimmy Sexton. But he doesn't call the shots, Darnold does. How's he going to lead the team if he can't even stand up to his agent?
If he is hurt and never the same again then I doubt he would get a big contract after getting cut. How is this going to save him millions?
honestly i rarely say shit like this but mac needs to get this shit done and give darnold whatever he wants and get him in camp. He can't afford to miss time. this is nonsense. I mean even if he wants a lambo and a BJ then mac better get on his knees and hit up a dealership ASAP. it's a cheap ass rookie contract (about 7.5 mil per season) so who cares if it's all guaranteed he is gonna stay a jet the whole time anyway and 20mil is the bonus so his salary is only 2.5mil per season average. don't piss away time on petty details
The only thing I wonder is whether the Jets are playing games with the signing bonus. Mayfield got his signing bonus paid fully upfront, do we know if the Jets are offering Darnold the same thing?
Oh wow, this is the same agent Joey Bosa currently has. Bosa held out big time during TC (4 weeks). Darnold better be good from the get-go like Bosa was. That agent fucking sucks.
Because obviously if he gets injured and isn't the same player again, and is cut because he's so bad, teams will be lining up to offer him a multi-million-dollar contract.
Amen. An agent's job isn't always to shake down management for everything he can. His job is to protect the welfare of his client. Sometimes, that means playing hardball with management, but other times it requires a different approach. Here, the agent should have told Darnold (and maybe he did) that the price of this hold-out would be to alienate the fanbase (and maybe management) by coming across as a greedy, me-first player. At that point, it would be Darnold's decision on how to proceed (and maybe this was Darnold's decision). Hopefully, this will be resolved soon and there will be no long-term damage, but I have to admit that I think less of Darnold now than I did before.
