And this is the reason the Jets have failed at "finding" the next Namath after all these years. They've never spent time and resources in developing their QBs. They seem to believe that they're born, not made. And it's why some other teams seem to "get lucky' and find good QBs: they know how to develop them. I believe the Jets took a turn in the right direction finally by hiring Douglas who recognizes that you need to have good offensive talent and can't rely on "defense wins championships". Was hiring Saleh and MLF good moves? IDK, the jury's still out. Over time, as they learn - if they get the chance to - maybe they'll prove to be great. But one thing I am sure of is that they failed in not bringing on someone better to work with and groom Zach. I hesitate to blame the tragic death of Zach's QB guru for his lack of consistent progress, and in fact there are other reasons, but is Calabrese the right guy to be teaching Wilson? I'm not in their film room and practice sessions so IDK, but it doesn't appear as if Zach is absorbing his lessons as well as he could, or needs to. I know it won't happen, but as I've said several times before, I wish they could hire Kurt Warner to work with Zach and MLF, because that's a guy who's "been there and done that", including failing and coming back from it.
After seeing Hall and Michael Carter next to each other in this offense, I think it’s pretty obvious that Carter is not a good runningback. He’s a dime a dozen in the NFL in my eyes. He can be a pretty good third down scatback but that’s probably his ceiling.
Eh this is definitely historically true with the Jets but they’ve done just about everything in their power to not repeat this mistake and make sure Wilson is surrounded with a cast that can lift him up (especially this year). The offensive line has also only been truly bad in one game (Pittsburgh). His protection was pretty good yesterday.
show me where i said he's the answer? if white mike has shown almost no ability to play qb then what has zach shown? negative ablility?? the dude has played in four games. he played poorly in two, one where he subbed in after zach got himself hurt by hanging on to the ball too long (again). white mike had no reps with the starters and was winging it in a game that was a blowout from the start ... he also played a terrible game against the bills (who where the best defense in the league last year) where he was coming off of injury. he played very well against the bengals and colts before he got hurt. my point is that its far to early to say doesnt have the potential to be a good player when he hasnt been given a fair shot to play
no teams did not learn that. a single team did. he played poorly against the best in the league bills defense and has not played since.
There is a strange contingent here that will insist after 17 starts we still don't know everything about Zach Wilson. But we know everything about Mike White after 3 starts.
Definitely there is a relation as you pointed out between how fast you release the ball and how they move in the pocket. If you go back to the first three games under Flacco, with arguably less pressures, he flourished in one game not because of release time as much as a clean pocket. Once he had a man on his face or chasing it was lights out. As to the later comment, IMO, how is Zach or anyone else able to assist blocking assignments when at least one defender has a clear path to him within two seconds or so? I don't see it. Pre snap? That is mostly affected by the game plan, and not a very good one at all against NE. We saw that time and time again, Saying the line was not as bad is a stretch, when he is running for his life every other play. When this happens, great ones like Allen, Watson, Mahomes create lanes by running for yardage, not something that is in our playbook yet and rightfully so. . Not even the great ones like AR can find targets very often with that kind of pressure, and I saw that in spades yesterday.
It’s not really fair to compare him to Hall, Breece has all-world potential but it doesn’t mean Carter is a scrub. He played well last year in 14 games, 700 rushing yards, avg of 4.3 as a rookie is not terrible and he could have done more if not injured. I still believe MLF abandons the run too early and it doesn’t help Wilson manage game as he should be doing at this point.
Holy sht--Check and Mate!! Unfortunately Saleh is one of them and says "ZW gives us the best chance to win" paraphrase.
Agreed, but is he receiving the best coaching, is he being utilized/developed properly. Even with Moore same questions... Mims too.
He needs to get benched in a game like yesterday. Look what a real coach did last Monday. Sat Mac Jones down. Didn't mean it was over he went right back to him and Jones started Sunday. After that terrible INT Wilson should have sat the rest of the day. Doesn't have to mean it's a controversy. He could start the next game. But if he's spiraling in game get him out of there. For all that went wrong we still could have won that game with competent offense.
I completely disagree with the last sentence. Seemed like every other play he had a defender in his butt or face before he could even look at the field of play. Are we really saying 16+ pressures to flush him out of the pocket was pretty good.
The only reason Flacco has been downgraded is to allow the coaches to continue to say the best players start without losing credibility.
It hasn’t been anything earth shattering. He was not under duress in any horrific way yesterday. He kept breaking the pocket and creating pressures because he’d roll out and cut the field in half and naturally he will get closed on.
Saying "Zack gives us the best chance to win" is the exact same thing as saying "The other guys behind Zack suck even worse than Zack". At that point all eyes in room turn to Joe Douglas with a "what the fuck have you been doing all year?????" look. Then Joe looks down at his clipboard and pretends to take an important call, turns and walks out of the room.
Again, it's not just the talent. That's a major aspect, but so is the coaching and the designing of plays, in that regard I'm not seeing much improvement from MLF and Calabrese. As for the OL being pretty good yesterday, I've already mentioned this several times...just because they're good sometimes doesn't erase the memory of the times they weren't. There was an experiment done with rats where they got them to reward themselves with a piece of food. Then they began to shock them every once in a while. They then divided the experiment by being consistent with when the shocks would come - every third time I believe - and the other group got shocks randomly. The first group learned how to avoid the shocks and continued to reward themselves. The second group refused to try and get food even though most of the time they wouldn't get a shock. The fact that the OL sometimes provides good protection doesn't mean Zach can count on them. How does he know which time they're going to be good and which time they're not? The OL is a serious issue. And this is the same thing that happened to Sam. If they don't get this fixed soon, we could be looking at a repeat of that debacle.
Dafuq are you talking about? Rats and shocks? There’s literally video after video of open receivers and basic concepts that Zach is completely oblivious to. How should MLF get Zach to stop being so stupid? Zach sucks, there’s your rat. Shocker!
