    As far as Mangold...

I figure he's a pro bowl 2009 season away from being the highest paid center in the NFL. I know he's getting first round pick money right now, but I wouldn't be against a small bump now to lock him up, as opposed to a major bump next year to do the same.

I guess my memory is faulty--I though he was about 3 million or more on the cap. Regarding Ellis, I agree with you that if we can't get an equal or better player, we should keep him.
I am hopeful we can get better.

^^Yes, he just had one of his best seasons in a few, and you know what? It really wasn't that meaningful. How much worse would it have been for DeVito and Mosely to split the time? My recall is fuzzy but I'm pretty sure he's in the 3-5 million range this season.

They want to sign Mangold and Washington after this season but before the '10 season begins. I have said that many times already. Don't expect it before then. They will keep money for that purpose.

No and yes. It depends on how you word the contract. It can start immediately, or next yr.

If what you were saying was true, then every time before FA, when players get resigned, the teams cap for that previous yr would get bumped. FA is when the new season starts since thats when the players are contracted until.

Contract extension is just adding a few more yrs to your original contract. We can sign them to a new contract that start as soon as the last one finishes. It all depends on how you do the contract so I wouldn't want those contracts to begin immediately, rather once their rookie contracts are up.

As for Mangold, its only been two yrs...I think. He still has two yrs left on his rookie deal. Way too early to be resigning him unless you hear some growling.

He counts $3,750,000 against the cap but we'd have $3,200,000 in dead money if we cut him.

While I do think that Mangold does deserve a long term deal he still has 2 more seasons under his current deal. Why dont we resign Leon seeing is how he is a RFA after this coming season then worry about Mangold latter

Consider his extension as back pay for the last 3 years. He has been a steal at 500k. It's time to pay the piper.
If he gets 5yr/$20m for example, he would be an 8 year Jet for a total cost of $21.5m.
That's an avg of $2.7m per. If his production remains or increases, that's a good deal.

Cap space is now 15 mil. Adjust accordingly. (oh and that doesn't include Leonhard's money which is still unknown)

Since all acounts are leonhard is being brought in to start, 2 mill a year for a starter is cheap as it gets. besides Shane lechler got a 4 year 12 mill dollar deal as a punter, so yeah this screams steal to me even if he is only a quality depth guy, he is cheap so its not a bad deal at all imo.
