Time will tell with Sheldon, I hope he keeps his mouth quiet this off-season. Williams, I think we need to see him get to that next level as a good pass-rusher before we crown him. As a rookie, he was a great run defender, but he needs to prove his value on 3rd down, Williams didn't play a lot on 3rd down earlier to mid in the season and regained that role late in the year.
This just helped us a ton: http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2016/02/26/salary-cap-for-2016-set-at-155-27-million-per-team/
Macc should try and get Fitz to sign a contract with performance incentives. That way if Father Time (or a much tougher schedule) catches up to him and he can't repeat his great '15 season (or if he loses his starting job in training camp), then the Jets are only on the hook for $6-$8M. On the other hand if Fitz lights it up again and plays great during the regular season (4000 yrds, 30 TDs, etc) he'd walk away with $10-$11M. If Fitz makes the playoffs and wins so many games, even the SB, he could walk away with $13-$15M. I just hate the thought of dumping tons of cap into Fitz knowing he could tank or the season gets away from us early.
Not really, the more money cap space for each team = more expensive it's going to cost to sign a player.( for example Damon Harrison position last year received 6 million in Fa , that number could be 7.5 now.
The Jets are going to have to pay Ryan Fitzpatrick anywhere 8- 10 million dollars per year. He is going to be the Jets starting Qb. ( no doubt about that) That is going rate for starting Qb not on his rookie deal. Where you can cover yourself is giving yourself an out after 2016 season to get out of that contract.( something like Cromartie contract) Okay say for argument sake he gets 10 million in 2016, for him to continue to get paid the club has the option for 2017. He would have to have similar season as 2015, or the Jets Qb they eventually draft is ready to assume the starting Qb position. Than you can say goodbye to Fitzpatrick.
I'm quoting my own post were I talk about offering Fitz an incentive filled contract. Here's an article in today's POST about Fitz's contract conundrum: http://nypost.com/2016/02/27/assessing-ryan-fitzpatricks-value-has-entire-nfl-puzzled/
Problem is, there is no middle ground when evaluating QB contracts. QBs fall into one of two categories: 1) on their rookie deals making < $5M, or 2) on their vet contract making > $15M. There are no QBs in the middle ground to compare Fitz to (Brady signed a team friendly deal for $9M but I don't think Fitz's agent wants to compare Fitz to Tom Brady). Same problem with Oswiller in Denver. He's coming off his rookie deal and hasn't shown enough to warrant a vet contract. Elway would love to give him a 'middle ground' contract (same with the Jets and Fitz) but there's nothing around to compare it too.
There should be a middle ground. Perhaps the Jets and Broncos can set that market this off season, and it would benefit everyone going forward.
...don't you mean use that money to re-sign Mo Wilk, arguably our most important player on defense? And Harrison, a close 2nd? Great young nose tackles are not easy to find! I would actually let Douzable, Henderson, Jarrett, and Allen walk if necessary to re-sign our 2 most important free agents, Wilkerson and Harrison! (oh yeah, and Fitz, can't forget him lol!)
It was in context to the Jets cap space being at around 30 mil ... Mo and Fitz took up 20 and instead of Ivory eating up a chunk I suggested the depth guys.
Despite the low sack total, Williams was actually quite effective getting to the quarterback. He had a very solid number of hurries and hits, despite being a rookie in a position where those numbers are often limited.
He had a very solid rookie year. Not hating on Williams by any means but we need to see him get to that next level. He still has plenty of work to do. He was excellent against the Fins this year, but I remember seeing him disappear alot in those Bills games.
He's definitely getting there. I bet he blossums in 2016. Mauldin will get there too.. That patriots game in week 16 gave us a small dose of our future norm. Our d-line + Mauldin was killing that man Brady.
Oh he definitely has some work to do, but I wouldn't say he's struggling in his pass rush. He actually reminds me a lot of how Mo was in his rookie year.
