He's not going to be a free agent before the end of the year. He's going to be a free agent at the beginning of the Free Agency period.
Vilma is playing very well; it wouldn't make any sense for NO to let him go. I really hope our FO didn't muck this deal up.
If they re-sign him they have to give a 1st round pick to the Giants and a 2nd round pick to the Jets. By not re-signing him they only have to give 2nd and 3rd round picks and they can still get him as a FA.
Time to call a spade a spade, because the Saints would have to give a 1st round pick to the Giants if they re-sign Vilma any hope that the Jets would get a 2nd round pick is gone. Time to move on.
As I watch Inside the NFL, the Saints highlights were all about JV doing his thing... hmmmm BTW, not even the captian, but he's the featured player??? I wonder why?
The hangup in the scenario is that if Vilma gets injured in the last third of the season he loses out big time. My guess is that he really has not been all that impactful for the Saints and they figure they may be able to resign him after the season or not but the #2 vs #4 value is worth more to them than a guarantee of resigning Vilma. Vilma is one of those players who is a really strong asset on a really strong defense and a decent asset on a decent defense and a terrible asset on a terrible defense. That makes him replaceable value on anything but a really strong defense.
Well if that is the case then the Aints have judged that JV is not that valuable to them since they are allowing him to be exposed to UFA
