It's difficult to build around a cornerback when he's paid like a quarterback. If you can get a good trade of high picks and a couple of players you absolutely should trade him. Especially now with the rookie salary cap.
I think the best way to build a Stout Defense is to have a great player in all 3 levels like the Ravens. Ngata on the line Ray Lewis and Suggs in the middle and Ed Reed playing safety and even Lardarius Webb who is a good corner. Right now we have no real stud on the line but 2 above average players in Pouha and Im hoping Wilk really makes strides this year. David Harris is a good LB all around but we still have no one to rush the passer like a Suggs can. Then we have Revis who is the best CB in the game right now and no safeties. Yet somehow we are statistically around Balts level. A lot of that is due to Revis. Now if you did find some sucker of a team to offer the world for him like a Washingtons deal for RG3 type deal I would take it of course. But I still don't think people understand just how necessary Revis is to our D.
Last line is a great point. But in Baltimore he also had Ngata in the middle of his line, Ray Lewis in the LB core, Reed at S, and Suggs pass rushing. With those 4 components you can get away without elite corners. If Revis were to be traded, I am sure that Rex could field another great defense, but it would be tougher since he would have less than what he had in BAL. Revis is your daddy beat me to the point about the caliber of players BAL has.
First of all, let's not forget this was still a top five defense, even last year, so we are talking not about the difference between a good and bad D but a very good D that could be better. And one of the things that makes it very good is the strength of the CB's. The Jets in fact have some real money invested in the middle of the field. Harris has a big contract, and relatively so do Scott and Pace. Pace's production last year was actually quite good when one takes into account he had more edge sealing responsibility once Thomas went out. But the 800 pound gorilla here is the hole that Gholston's wasted pick left. WHat is missing here is not a totally new system. It is really about two positions. It is about getting a pass rush from OLB, and better coverage from at least one of the safeties. Scott and Pace will likely be replaced or have reduced roles in 13, but for now the Jets do not need something like a change to a cover 2 D, or something like that. They just need a better pass rush first of all, and secondarily a better cover job from one of the safeties.
If we traded Revis we would have ammo to get great players at other positions that are more impactful.
Aside from the '09 defense, the Jets defenses haven't been nearly as dominant as the Ravens defenses. In '09 we had our worst CB's too. Having Kris Jenkins for more of the season made a huge difference.
Baltimore does have an almost elite corner in Lardarius Webb. Hes definitely top 10. I would kill though for an Ed Reed type safety and Suggs pass rushing.
Webb wasn't there when Rex was. My point was that Rex never relied on elite corners to make his defense elite prior to the Jets.
Of yea of course but Rex chose to build this D around corners. I honestly will never know half as much as Rex does about defenses so I kind of just trust in him maybe too much in that department. I do know that cornerbacks are usually not the cornerstone of a defense but when you have someone who is the very best and it is not even disputable at his position then he is someone you can build around.
Of course you can build around him, but can you build a dominant defense around a CB? Has that ever been done? Does the salary cap allow that without sacrificing in other areas? Is it too easy to avoid cornerbacks that making them the cornerstone of a dominant defense is unrealistic? If the end result is not a dominant defense than how much value is that greatest CB ever really adding? Taking that a step further, how efficient is your money being spent if you're spending QB money on a dominant CB that doesn't help make the defense dominant?
I think everyone's missing a critical point. You can build a team with a CB being paid an disproportional percentage of the cap, but you're going to have to find bargains elsewhere. Which means it'll be even harder to do with the way Tannenbaum has assembled this team. It's not about paying Revis, Ferguson & Mangold a salary that is appropriate for their rank among their peers. It's about finding the young bargains to replace the Bart Scott's of the team that will play as well but cost less.
You really want to count on the current Jet FO to pull off moves like that??? At least half of what they got they would waste on bad trades, and the rest would end up under contracts that would make Revis's look like a great deal for the team. No thanks.
Not "nearly"? The Ravens have better overall personnel,as others have noted. Yet the Jet D with Revis is fairly close to theirs. Again, let's not count on the Jet FO to pull off a complete rebuild of the D. Just get a frigging decent pass rusher already and let's see how far that takes them. IF they can't do that, they can't even start to effectively rebuild the D in the manner you suggest. If you thought about it for a minute, you'd agree with me.
I have not ruled out the possibility that they can get a decent pass rusher. In all seriousness, given the history with Gholston, and the several years it has been since Tanny has been the GM, if at this point, this off season, they can't find an effective pass rusher, they really should all be led out, disemboweled, and then drawn and quartered. Firing them would not be enough. Okay, the dismeboweling and the drawn and quartering stuff were not in all seriousness, but you get the point.
Also, where does the no chance stuff come from? It is the O that is holding this team back for the most part. If we had someone like Tom Brady, the Jets would have won the SB by now no problem.
I'm assuming sarcasm? The Giants have taken 3 defensive backfield players with their 1st round pick in three of the last 5 drafts. All 3 of them were on the field for their playoff run. They don't have a lock down CB and they aren't overpaying but they continue to use first day picks and field first day talent in their secondary. They also drafted Paul in the mid first round where we drafted Gholston at 6. That move alone is a huge gap in personal.
