In & Out is nothing special. They have the freshness factor, but fresh low quality meat really doesn't inspire me. Fatburger is the best fast food hamburger chain in the world, period (from what I've tried). We just got a Steak & Shake at the Casino near my house. I have heard good things, and will make a point of getting there this weekend.
I miss diners big time. My wife has never been back east, so really cannot understand why fries with brown gravy and a cup of coffee at 2am is such a special memory to me. Obviously the best pizza in the world, and possibly the best chinese I've had in my travels, in NY. And when I say NY, I am not referring to Canada south. Upstate NY sucks on all fronts, unless you had a downstate import. When I lived in Albany and Buffalo there was only 1 good pizza place in each city, coincidentally both named Sal's.
Jersey has the most diners in the world, how crazy is that? It does seem like there is one every 10 feet.
I got access to both, about 3 mins away from my place. Both are really good, but very different. In N Out is fresh and tasty, but their burgers are small, hence why most get the double-double (double meat and cheese.) Fatburger burgers are thicker, meatier and delicious too. If I had to pick one, I would side with Fatburger though cause they got fat (steak fries) and skinny fries, while In N Out has regular fries that are a bit too all-natural for me (and yes I know that sounds nuts.) I like them though, just in doses. I love me some burgers! :metal:
Well I can't say much good for pizza upstate, you are right about that, and also Chinese gets worse the further away you get from NYC, least in this general part of the country. But I know of some very good diners upstate. The one in Roscoe is famous, but I also like the Liberty Diner. There's also a very good one in Saugerties. Patterson, is that upstate? Heh. Very good one there, on Route 22. Maybe in the off season we can do a thread about our favorite diners...
Adding to this list... Everready diner in Hyde Park. I hear it was on some food channel show or something like that once.
