Yes, Wilson is a top QB, but he's still 33, and has taken a ton of hits over the last several years. Those take a toll on the body as well as the psyche. He's smart. Why keep playing and wind up a cripple or dying by the time he's 50? Maybe Wilson can adjust his style of play, but I doubt it. When a player has been playing at a high level for a long time doing things a certain way, they are reluctant to change, and even if they try to change it can affect their performance. Besides, I don't think Wilson's style of play was the problem. Seattle's OL was the problem, and maybe the play calling.
In a way I feel bad about this. The Seahawks have been good trade partners for the Jets over the years. It was their bid for John Abraham that got the Falcons to give up a 1st for JAbe. The Falcons really wanted to give up their 2nd and a conditional 2007 pick for him. The Seahawks offered the #31 and the Falcons wound up trading down to #29 and giving the Jets the pick in the deal. The deal wound up being JAbe for Mangold which was at least break even for the Jets.
There could be some good QBs in the draft next year that they could have traded up for. For that matter, they're picking #9 this year aren't they? They could draft Malik, let him sit and learn this year, and he could be ready to roll next year. Now it's win or bust. If they win, they'll probably have little chance of repeating, and if they don't win, they're going to wind up winning 4-6 games (or less) in a couple of years, and have to rebuild.
Yeah and if I am Houston I take that and run. They could possibly have this as rebuild for the Watson trade. Gotta assume he will go for way more than Wilson considering he is almost 10 years younger. 4 or 5 1s in 2 years + 3 or 4 2s in 2 years.. seems like a beautiful opportunity to rebuild Houston 2022 1st Denver 2022 1st Houston 2022 2nd Denver 2022 2nd Houston 2023 1st Denver 2023 1st Seattle 2023 1st Houston 2023 2nd Denver/Seattle 2023 2nd
It's baffling why Seattle would a) want to trade a superstar QB - teams spend forever trying to find a franchise QB like Russell Wilson and don't see why they would want to start over and b) try to replace him with another in the midst of all sorts of legal issues and uncertainties.
Couple of things: The Adam's trade didn't "break the seahawks". Wilson's contract did. The Broncos have a roster very similar to the one they had when they signed Manning. They know what their doing. Their now competing for a second SB in the last decade while I'm told we should be happy with 6-7 wins next year. We could have gotten a similar haul for the Zach pick. Whats a bigger gamble. Risking a haul on a proven top QB who made the playoffs 10 years in a row, or risking a haul on an unproven QB who was a late riser in the draft? IMO were the stupider team.
not alone. adams contract, poor drafting and general mismanagement of the team. wilson held the team above it's talent level for many years after the defense fell apart, partly because they had to pay wilson and partly because they drafted horribly and never replaced any talent form the 2 drafts that won them a SB and gave them the legion of boom exactly. wilson may not be elite, but he's consistently a top 10 QB and has had seasons where he is arguably top 5 but he's under contract for 2 more years cheap (24 and 27 mil) when a QB of his caliber would easily cost 40 mil these days. seattle paid him 102 million for 2 years so the cheaper back end of the front loaded contract is a huge bonus to denver. the also still have about 25 mil in cap room and plenty of draft picks. this is the part I don't agree with. we didn't trade a haul, and the fact that teams were willing to give that haul shows zachs value. In this case zach is wilson. so for us needing a QB it made sense to get our guy. sure it's a pick and not a proven one, but on the flip side he isn't 33 and aging and costing 5 mil over the next 2 years and will want 40+ mil after that. part of the rookie deal is the cheap contract. we have 5 years with zach as a very cheap player. If you think he's the guy, no haul is worth it
Bobby Wagner's contract also hurt the seahawks ability to rebuild. SO really they had an anchor on both sides of the ball. The seahawks are also releasing Wagner. Their cap is opening up, though it may be for Deshaun Watson? The trade offers didn't mean Zach would be a success, and his bottom of the league finish doesn't make him valuable. He was a gamble, and a bigger one than Denver just made. Not trading the second pick last season when we had so many issues to address was probably the stupidest draft move I've ever see the Jets make. Nobody in their right mind would give us two 1sts, two 2nds, and a 3rd for him now.
at the end of the day though, to be good you have to pay some high end guys. wagner was a top 2 LBer in the league for a decade and the QB of the defense. he earned every penny. his salary was only 18 mil. the same year we gave mosley 5 years 85 mil (17.5m avg) wagner signed a 3 year 54 mil (18m avg) mosley hasn't weighed us down and if he had played every year and been even half as good as wagner we wouldn't be complaining. it's possible. they have the picks and cap room to make a move. But watson has a no trade clause and may not want to go there now that they are going full rebuild mode every draft pick is a gamble. you don't think other teams didn't get similar offers for other QBs over time? you don't think the colts weren't offered a bag for the right to draft peyton manning. what if they took it because they had holes? they'd be hating themselves for the past 20 years over that. it's not a stupid move, if a team was willing to give up all that to draft zach then obviously they felt he was worth a lot.
yes because it's irrelevant how they turn out. it's the possibility that is the value. that's all draft picks and prospects are. i'm sure somewhere someone said mahomes will be the best QB in the NFL by year 2 and was laughed at but here we are. smith was a better prospect then rodgers which caused rodgers to fall to 24.
Not even.... it's a stupid analogy. Manning was the most hyped prospect in my lifetime, and wouldve been #1 overall whenever he decided to leave college
I think your missing the point. it doens't have to be manning. it could be any high picked QB who worked out. it could be josh allen, matt stafford, etc. Look at mahomes then. the chiefs traded up and have up 27th overall, future 1st, and a 3rd rounder. then took mahomes. Buffalo needed a QB. mind you it worked out for them because they wound up taking allen a year later and he became a stud too but what if they didn't? what if they wound up with say rosen. don't you think those extra picks they got weren't worth mahomes? on top of that they had to use those picks they got to move up for allen anyway. The moral is, QB needy teams should take the QB if they think he can be the FQB because they are too hard to come by
We are acting like Zach is done . Zachade throws this past season that notany QBs can. Zach will be very good next season.
