Our run defense was bad but so was everything else, and run defense is low on the list of things teams need to be good at to be a good team. Teams do 4 broad things - pass, run, defend pass, defend run. Defending the run is the least important. If you can pass well and defend the pass well then you're not likely to need a good run defense anyway.
The Saints disagree apparently. Point being tho you said they addressed S. They haven’t actually improved at the position.
How exactly did they address S? They added Whitehead and lost Maye. You are trying too hard to claim they addressed it imo. Having Joyner back instead of playing Davis will hopefully help if he can regain form.
Let it go, dude. Maye fucked himself over and made it impossible for the Jets to resign him. The rest is you trying to manipulate the argument because you don't want to accept it.
JJ should improve the run D some. If Solomon Thomas can stay healthy, big if, he should do alright filling in the Futakasi hole.
If he was an impossible guy to sign he wouldn’t have been scooped immediately in FA. But I’m not even trying to rehash the Maye signing, so much as point out the S position has not been upgraded, and is still a concern. We are one injury away from a repeat of 2021 at the position. To the point of this thread, I’m just as concerned about DL and ILB. We need to sign a couple more vets for depth / potential starter.
Can you describe how Maye and his agent colluded to keep news of his arrest from the Saints during contact negotiations? I didn't bring him up, you did.
he only did that as stop gaps becuase we didn't have cap room and were desperate and he didn't want to commit to long term deals yet with the instability we had
Soloman Thomas is not good against the run tho. Definitely not a nose or a two gapper. I think he will be more of a situational pass rusher. Sheppard is going to see a lot of Fatukasi's reps, for better or worse. We desparately need an upgrade over Rankins as well. I'd like to see them bring in a big body vet as a stop gap, while also re-signing Phillips.
IMO it's #4. No team can be strong at every position. The best you can hope for is to put out a product that has the strength in other areas to compensate for the teams weaknesses. In this draft, I feel the Jets have done a lot in accomplishing that goal. If we score lots of points, it won't matter so much if one aspect of the defense is weaker in comparison. And BTW, if it's between the run defense and the pass defense, I'd rather have a stronger pass defense.
