You can now read JD's mind? How about most obvious explanation: he thought his OT draft pick and 10 mil/year signing plus a back-up OT signing (Max and Duane plus Billy) were good players? And he fucked up in assessing all 3 of them. Looks like soon we can add Carter Warren to that list, though he still has a chance. And his key WR signings (Lazard and Hardman) were crap too. Why don't we stick with the obvious: @dmw was right and JD missed on a lot of players, not just this past year, but the year before too when he originally signed Duane and drafted Max. And btw, speaking of Carter Warren, I have re-watched a few games focusing on him. And he sucked about as bad as others, maybe slightly less. Yet I recall JD or Saleh (or both) praising him. He needs a giant second year leap, but there is a lot to work to do and he is already 25. This appears to be so far the same shit as with Max: a bad pick, whom JD and coaches think is good. If he is on the roster as anything more than #10, it will be another mistake. And no, it has nothing to do with Rodgers.
Every team always has a backup QB even if he's the sixth tight end, long snapper or punter. What every team needs is a capable backup QB. The Jets had no one in that slot for far too long.
Generally, I agree with you, as I don't like giving up draft picks, and this year the Jets need to use their draft picks since they're short anyway. I especially wouldn't be happy if the Jets had to give up a 4th round pick for Howell. That said, I'd still make that move, because Howell's cap charge in 2024 will only be $1 million. The difference between his cap hit and Brissett's or Minshew's or any other veteran QB who's worth a darn will probably be somewhere between $4-$8 million and maybe more, which is probably enough to sign either an OL or a WR in FA. It will especially be a no-brainer if we can get him for our 6th round pick or one of our 7th round picks. He's young and can still improve. He could play in 2024 if Rodgers gets hurt, but it wouldn't hurt him to sit for a year and learn, and we'd have a capable possible starter when Rodgers retires.
I see that the Commanders are likely to draft a top QB prospect. Do they currently have a QB that could be their backup besides Howell?
Brisett's not under contract, though, so we could, at least in theory, still get him. He's got to love those options, though. The two most dysfunctional franchises in the league potentially being his top suitors this offseason.
Yes. As I said in a couple of posts, I'd rather not give up any draft picks at all, but I'd even go for trading one of the 4th round picks for Howell because he has such a low cap hit for 2024 and 2025, that it would enable the Jets to sign more FAs, and perhaps keep Huff. If you were asking specifically about Zach, then yes. It's for everyone's benefit that he be traded elsewhere. Most Jets fans hate him, and the NY media pretty much does as well. If he has any chance of developing, it needs to be elsewhere, as I don't think he would ever develop here now, especially with this CS. I hate to see anyone in any field of endeavor with a lot of talent not develop and use their talent. I still believe in his arm talent, and I believe that in the right system, and good coaching, he can develop. The Jets need to move on. They need a backup QB they believe in and perhaps like Howell, who could possibly have a future here as a starter, or a trusted vet like Brissett or Minshew. Whether it be for a draft pick straight up, as part of a move to get a 2nd round pick, or as part of a trade to bring in Howell, I'm in favor of it.
I didn't realize it upset people, it was intended as a joking way of saying he quit on the team for his wife. I'm not saying there is anything inheritantly wrong with choosing your family over your career, the issue for me was the timing. Now it's time to move on and bring in somebody closer to Garret Wilson's level.
