I don't think it matters who we take. If our pick busts it will be miserable. Whoever we draft we will have to live with that player for at least 4 seasons. I have low expectations and just hope we can have a QB that reaches can reach and sustain a level of mediocrity that we have not seen except in brief flashes since Ken O'Brien..
If Rosen and Darnold are off the board you either draft Barkley or trade out of the pick. You can't draft Mayfield at 3. Not because he might bust but he doesn't have the measurable to be a first round pick. You can't take him at 3 based on nothing more than desperation.
The more I think about this, the more i believe that it's going to be Saquon SAY GONE! if Darnold and Rosen are off the board. The dude secretly LOVES the Jets and he might be the best RB prospect to ever come out. It's rare you have that and I would welcome it to be honest. We need great players who want to play here. If he can run, block out of backfield and catch out of backfield.....not to mention increase the culture of the team...it's more valuable than a risky QB prospect.
Hey Biggs I know nothing about college football. So I am a noob when it comes to college QB's. The clips I watched about the big 4, Darnold, Rosen, Mayfield, Allen made me hate Allen, dislike Darnold, like Rosen and love Mayfield. But it won't surprise me if Allen and Darnold are studs and Rosen and Mayfield are busts. But allow me to chime in about something. Mayfield not having measurable to be a first round pick. You maybe right but Mayfield to me is a fighter and survivior. And that's what I like about him more than anything. I believe he will find a way to be a winner and that's my gut feeling. I hope board treats me nicely if he busts. Lol.
You don't trade three 2nd rounders and move up 3 spots to take a RB. It makes no sense considering the fact that there are talented RB's who can be had in later rounds.
We have had the #3 pick for almost 2 weeks, and it really is a crap shoot with which QB the Jets should choose. Darnold would be a slam dunk, but he is clearly going to Cleveland or the Giants. Rosen seemed like the #2 choice to me, but durability and partying are concerns. Allen has so much upside, but can the Jets really wait 2 years to put their QB on the field? And Mayfield did not seem like a Top 3 pick to me due to size and the other QB available, but he clearly has risen on many draft boards. Everyone wants a quick answer, but the truth is we won't know if the Jets (or the other 3 teams picking QB) were right or wrong with their pick for a couple of seasons.
I honestly don't care if the QB we end up with is ready to start week 1 this year. I want the QB who will be great for 10+ years, lead us to the playoffs year after year, and hopefully a Lombardi trophy or three.
Then again, if we luck up and get a QB that is ready at some point to play during his rookie year and is needed to play, we might find out early on if we hit the QB jackpot. Remember we have 1 recovering old codger starting and his back up just had his knee go thru major repairs. I doubt if either or both of them makes it thru the season with our Oline so whomever we draft, had better be more ready than Hack was.
With the rookie wage scale the pick won't strap the team financially. It will, however, hurt them because of the missed draft picks traded to get the #3 pick. To me the biggest bust is the Jets moving up from 6 to 3 and taking Mayfield and he turns out to be a bust. Not because he's a bust but because I think he would have been there at 6 (Barkley and Nelson picks sandwiched in between QB's). That is a colossal failure by Mac not realizing the #4 QB would still be there at 6. I'm not saying I don't like Mayfield better than say Allen but Mayfield is the one guy I think would be there at 6. The others.. very doubtful they'd be around at 6 so I get moving up for anyone not named Mayfield.
We should have thought about that before trading to a random number 3 spot where we have no control over what we get. If the front office actually believes that 3 QB's are all equal...that's an even bigger concern over their lack of competence.
maybe that's part of the plan? if rosen and darnold go 1 and 2, maybe the jets leverage that and trade back for a team really wanting barkley or chubb. who knows? draft day is going to be crazy though this year
If he liked 4 QBs then I could see the argument for staying at 6 but if he only likes three with the Colts actively trying to trade their pick and the possibility the Browns could trade number 4 or the Broncos 5 he had to trade up to get one of the QBs he wanted. If he did not make the trade with the Colts someone else would have likely have made that trade. I also tend to agree that the closer we get the more that the trade would have cost. If you want a FQB it was the smart move to make. What you seem to be saying is more that Mayfield is not worth a top 5 pick. I would say the same about Allen. But both points are very debatable and any of the 4 QBs could arguably go anywhere in the top 5. I cannot recall a year where the hierarchy of the top QBs have been so in flux. It is quite remarkable. What one person loves another hates. All kinds of respectful people have all 4 QBs ranked 1st. It was the right move to make. What you might disagree with more is how Mac has them ranked.
Brooks, I watch a lot of college football, but this past year I recorded as many of the Big 4 games as possible, the difference between watching a highlight video and an actual game is enormous! The positive aspect was being able to fast-forward thru commercials and when opponents had the ball. Being able to see the play sequences also give a better indication of a team's offense. So having said that; here are my basic observations: 1) Rosen was by far my choice as Best-Prepared QB, pocket-presence, ability to read the field, throw in tight windows in a ProStyle offense was impressive. 2) Darnold was my favorite going into season, but came back a bit due to his fumbles, ints., sacks which were a concern, I still believe he has ability to be a NFL QB but maybe he needed to stay in one more season. 3) Allen went down on my list, Iowa game wasn't pretty, Oregon was worse, CMichigan Bowl game was impressive (even though he only threw 19 passes...3 TDs)....his Senior Bowl performance was spectacular after a slow start. I definately would take the risk on him, shows a lot of Big Ben and Wentz in his play. (Big Ben also struggled at Miami, OH vs. bigger competition.) 4) Mayfield was a player that I wanted to like, but couldn't get away from the spread-offense, weak defenses in his conference. I like his spunk and fire, but IMO that only goes so far in NFL, you need to find 2/3rd reads (which I felt he rarely did), if Jets take him, I will pray I am wrong, but just not buying him as a Brees-type, if he succeeds it will be more like a Russell Wilson role. If you get a chance, go I YouTube and watch a complete game of each QB.....
So i went back and looked at some mock drafts from last year and where they had the top 4 Qbs going. pretty much none of them predicted even close. most had them going way later (which could be why we see so many QB heavy mocks this year) most had the 1st QB off the board at 12 to cleveland (trubisky) this was the closest one I found http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2696408-2017-nfl-mock-draft-matt-millers-post-combine-projections They have trubisky going 3rd to the bears (they traded up to 2 to take him) They have watson in the 10 spot to the bills (most predicted watson going in the 2nd round or late 1st) Watson went 12th to the texans but the chiefs traded up to 10 and grabbed mahomes They have the texans taking kizer at 25. kizer went in the 2nd to the browns, but the texans did trade up for watson They have the chiefs taking mahomes at 27. So they predicted the chiefs to take mahomes (correct), the bears to take trubisky (correct) and the texans to take a QB (they traded up to 12 for watson when he had watson already off the board in the 10 spot, which did wind up being a QB) he also predicted watson would go in the mid 1st round when many had him pegged in the 2nd. That was the closest one to what happened i could find If we take the same guys 2018 mock http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...ers-latest-predictions-with-1-month-remaining he's got darnold at the 1 spot to cleveland the jets take Allen at 3 (giants take chubb at 2) Analysis: My belief has been throughout this process that the Jets covet Josh Allen. I reported back in November sources at Wyoming told me no team has done more work on Allen than the Jets. He's a big (6'5", 233 lbs), athletic, strong-armed quarterback with the ideal tools to run offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates' scheme. Broncos take mayfield at 5 Bills trade up to 6 for rosen he doens't have jackson in the 1st at all
