Florio says on the pregame that Watson told the Texans he wanted them to bring in Saleh. They declined to even request an interview. So Watson actively wants to play for our new head coach.
Every day that goes by, along with every tweet and report, kills his trade value and hurts the Texans. The recent report that he will never play another game for them makes it a near foregone conclusion that a couple firsts and a couple additional picks will be the deal. We're not that lucky in Jet land. Miami can throw Tua at them as the shiny toy in addition to the draft picks. But this is definitely getting interesting fast.
If we're really interested in trading for Watson, I wouldn't worry too much about Tua unless the Texans prefer him over Fields and Wilson.
The Jets are arguably the most dysfunctional team in the league, but even we never ran a franchise QB out of town.
There are two small things we have going for us. One, we have an owner who embraced the social justice platform more than the vast majority of the league. Christopher Johnson, for all his faults, really stood out as a positive to me on the NFL owner landscape this summer - and he didn't hurt that image with the hiring of Saleh. Secondly, IF the Texans aren't sold on Tua (which is entirely possible), having the 2nd pick in this draft is a big advantage over the 3rd - it gives you a guarantee of the guy you want AND is a more valuable trade chip if you go that direction. And we also know that Watson actively likes Saleh.
I think it would take: #2 + all of the Seattle picks. So 3 1's + a 3. I would still even do that because you would have #34 + our 1 next year with 60+ in cap this off season after factoring in Watsons contract.
I remember reading somewhere that the GM Houston just hired was extremely high on Tua coming into last season. Who knows if he still holds that opinion of him after his rookie season.
I've been a Watson fan since watching him at Clemson.... and really wanted the JETS to draft him, but if the JETS give up all that for him, he'll be in the same shitty situation he is currently in Houston.... and we'll get to watch some QB heroics while losing games
I guess we just disagree about the state of the franchise then. The Jets situation is infinitely better than Houston. They have zero cap assets for the draft and are -15 million in cap. The Jets would still have the #34 and picks 3-7 in this upcoming draft and then in 2022 a full cabinet of picks, but will already have the most important position filled.
The Texans are making the Jets look like a model franchise. I don't blame Watson one bit for being disgruntled.
