He tried NC, he really did try to get Tunsil.

I know he did, but imo he shouldn't have given up after he failed to get Tunsil. "Trying" isn't good enough. I really like Mac. I'm not killing him or saying he should be fired for it, but he's human, he will make some mistakes while he's growing into the job. I think it only fair to point those out. IMO when approaching a draft, he has to look at the team's needs, and not only that draft, but what the next draft or two looks like.

When you have a dire need for OTs and you have a draft that has some pretty good OTs in it and the draft the following year will most likely be a weak one for OTs, then you have to strike while the "iron is hot." IMO the best GMs draft to the strength of the draft. I like Lee's potential and to a lesser degree, Hack's, but when Mac knew he had an LT that was close to retirement and needed to be upgraded, and that the RT definitely needed to be upgraded, imo, taking an OT should have been his number one priority even over LB or QB. When your tackles are weak, it doesn't really matter who your QB is, he's not gonna be at his best or possibly even stay healthy.

Maybe he should not have selected Hack with second round pick, but if he selects a Tackle and Hack goes on to be a superstar for another team, the board would say he should haven taken him.

I'm of the opinion that the CS was still trying to figure out what players were worth keeping, developing and cutting.

We can sit back in a forum and say that many things could be done, but we have seen these players a lot longer than Mac and the CS. Not saying we are better evaluators, just more exposure.

They have to go through each player and watch tape, evaluate them based on a new system, who is learning it and who is not.

If Woody fires TB, we are going to deal with a different philosophy from a different HC and it will take time to develope players, evaluate, ....etc

As a GM I don't think that he can look out 2 years down the road with the draft, he should have a philosophy in place first, and build a team that represents that philosophy.

Put the draft board together based on BPA and BPA that fits philosophy of team. If they are close then go with BPA that fits philosophy.

It's similar to the steelers, they have a philosophy on how they build the team and they don't deviate from that.

We knew Rex loved CBs and the jets drafted accordingly.

I still don't have too much of an idea of how Mac likes to approach the draft, other than he likes drafting linemen later in the draft and developing them.

Personally I'll give him a pass, not because he has not made mistakes, I just feel the jets have some talent but the scheme being used by the CS does not fit the talent they have.

I would like to add one thing about Mac, I hope he does not base his philosophy on the same philosophy Casserly used because I really did not like his approach to bldg a team.

99% chance dak still would be stuck behind fitz, petty and geno regardless. bowles clearly doesn't like playing young QBs

Idk if it's necessarily that. The quickest way to hinder a young QB is to put him behind a shit line.

Dak has a great one. He's letting Sixpatrick take the beating. We have the two worst starting tackles in the league. That's just a recipe for disaster for a young QB.

    Red,

Good post. I agree with most, if not all, of your points. Maybe I'm expecting too much from a GM entering his 2nd season. Maybe with 3-4 years experience Mac will start doing some of the things I mentioned. I definitely think an experienced, quality GM HAS to look a couple of drafts down the road. He has to think long term and figure the best ways and times to address team needs. He can't always go BPA. Needs have to be considered and addressed in meaningful ways. That doesn't mean reaching out of need, either.

It's rare that the top-rated defensive player in the draft falls into your lap. When he does, you have to take him.

That said, I would think that often there will be 2-4 players (maybe more) that have roughly equal grades on the team's board. In a situation like that, the GM can look at his team needs, consider who might be available to them in next year's draft or FA, and that will affect/influence his decision. If his team has equally strong needs at two positions, and this draft class is especially strong in one of those positions, but the following year's draft won't be strong at that position, then he may need to go with that position in this draft, even though he may like the player at the other position a little more, or have him slightly higher rated. This is especially true when the next year's draft will be deep and strong at that second position. IMO good teams are never built by taking the best player at a position of need in a weak draft for that position, unless that player happens to be great or the only really good player at that position. It's better to address that need through FA and then address it in a subsequent draft that is strong at that position.

As I said, I like Mac and think he has done enough good things and shown the necessary ability to become a very good, if not great, GM, and thus merits time to build the team and develop his systems for doing things. So I'm not going to beat him up for what I think are mistakes, but I think it's only fair to point them out if I also point out the things that I think he has done well.

Cimini loves those what-ifs. Next he'll do one where we drafted Peyton Manning in 1997 and Belichick stayed because he wanted to coach Peyton. Come to think of it, I hope he doesn't read this forum, or I might have given him ideas.

    IF RELEASED:
Clady: 10M savings (500k dead) depends on rest of season
Mangold: 9M savings (no dead money) i would keep
Sheldon: 8M savings (no dead money) possible trade bait
Marshall: 7.5M savings (no dead money) i would keep
Revis: 7.3M savings (8M dead) depends on rest of season
Harris: 6.5M savings (no dead money) might need paycut to retain. if not release
Decker: 5.75M savings (3M dead) release
Gilchrist: 5.38M savings (1.25M dead) release
Breno: 4.5M savings (625k dead) release
    J Jenkins: 3M savings (750k dead) release
Folk: 3M savings (750k dead) depends on rest of season
Henderson: 2.75M savings (no dead money) depends on Harris. release if we retain Harris
ASJ: 1.14M savings (no dead money) depends on rest of season

Key Free Agents: (resigning depends on rest of season)
    Brian Winters
    Marcus Williams
    Ben Ijalana
    Bruce Carter
    Tanner Purdum

Can't release all your starters at once.
Some difficult decisions ahead. All of these guys are playing for their futures here at this point.[/QUOTE]

As the weeks have gone by some of these have become no brainers while others still require a bit more time to truly figure out. J. Jenkins was cut so non issue...henderson non-football IR - probably not coming back, Breno, Gilchrist, Clady, Revis are all goners. We will need to decide whether we want to invest so much money at WR... personally I would invest heavily in locking up younger talents on the team who have shown promise... Enunwa, Wesley Johnson and Brian Winters all come to mind. We have to cut either Marshall or Decker. Mangold and David Harris are the two hard decisions IMO because David Harris is not a modern day linebacker and is really bad in coverage which teams have exposed over and over again. Love the leadership and he's been a career jet but it may be time to let him go...Mangold, I think has another 1-2 seasons of good play...can see us trying to restructure and retain. We cannot cut Mangold Giacomini and Clady all at once. It would leave us in bad position because we would need to draft and/or replace via free agency.

Either ways, 2017 Jets will look very different IMO

I forgot we still have 4 TEs on the roster. Mac needs to do a better job of managing the roster.

Jarvis Jenkins was waived back on 11/9 & picked up by the Chiefs on 11/14.
He was signed back in March & was given $3 million guaranteed for which the Jets got 119 defensive snaps.
Do we get anything back or is the dead money zero'd out since he signed with someone else? This capshit is hard to keep up with.

It doesn't matter how different the team looks. As long as that clueless bastard is back at HC and the clueless owner continues to own the team and make the decisions. Nothing will change.

I herd that there gunna dump everyone on the team except Shitz. Then proceed to give him a 155 million dollar contract so he could play every position at once.
As long as only Fitz is out there without anyone fuckin his game up. Jets will go 16-0 and win the superbowl

    Book it.

I really hope Macc cuts/trades Petty at the end of the season. The kid is wasting his time here. If he stays, he'll wind up like all other drafted jet Qb's with the exception of Pennington.

To some degree I agree that it all stops at the top, and if you don't have a plan, or competent football people running the show then sometimes it doesn't really matter but I am a bit less cynical in my opinions of Woody and I'll probably get crucified for saying that. As for Bowles, he coming out and hitching his wagon to Fitz....well...that's indefensible

I'm certainly not going to crucify you. You're a sensible and good Jets fan. I can understand wanting to stay positive and hoping for the best. I've just been doing it for over 50 years, and just can't do it any more. It's sad that things are at this point, but I just can't; see Woody selling the team, and I can't see the team ever becoming successful and winning anything as long as Woody owns the team.

I give you props for watching this team for that long, your loyalty is commendable given the countless years of horrific results. I would say the way you're feeling is how many feel, and that is apathy. The jets, and Todd Bowles have made you, me, and many others apathetic which is truly sad. But what do you expect when Bowles preaches minimal emotions, level headedness, and preaches accountability but does nothing to enforce it. Things will get better though because you probably can't get much shittier than this season has been

I'd keep both Marshall/Decker if we can. Not only would it be good for the possible young quarterback starting but it could entice a decent free agent quarterback to come here.

We'll be replacing both tackles and likely will need all the help we can get.

Unless they're comfortable with Enunwa filling the #2 hole because the guy can absolutely ball and he's a matchup nightmare where ever he is because of his size/strength. As others have said; think Anquan Boldin pt. II.

I take back a bit of what's I said about not cutting a ton of starters. I hope they do it. Blow it up in a sense.

Clady/Revis/Harris/Giacomini/Gilchrist should all be gone and likely frees up in the $35-$40 million range.

I wonder how Riley Reiff (former first rounder I believe) has played in Detroit. He's the only free agent tackle that isn't a dinosaur that could be worth a damn.

Thanks. I'm not apathetic, however. I'm freaking pissed! LOL I have to keep reminding myself that it's only a game, and not that important in the grand scheme of things. That's why it's not going to be that difficult to just walk away from this joke of a team.

    Updating my October assessments:

    IF RELEASED:
Clady: 10M savings (500k dead) RELEASE
Mangold: 9M savings (no dead money) KEEP
Sheldon: 8M savings (no dead money) TRADE
Marshall: 7.5M savings (no dead money) RELEASE, unless Decker will be out an extended period of time with injuries.
Revis: 7.3M savings (8M dead) RELEASE; i would consider bring back for reduced money if they thought he could play FS tho.
Harris: 6.5M savings (no dead money) KEEP
Decker: 5.75M savings (3M dead) KEEP, unless injuries will keep him out for quite some time, in which case release.
Gilchrist: 5.38M savings (1.25M dead) RELEASE
Breno: 4.5M savings (625k dead) RELEASE
J Jenkins: 3M savings (750k dead) ALREADY RELEASED
Folk: 3M savings (750k dead) KEEP
Henderson: 2.75M savings (no dead money) ALREADY RELEASED
    Pryor: 2.7 all guaranteed TRADE
McLendon: 2.13 savings (1.75 dead money) KEEP
ASJ: 1.14M savings (no dead money) KEEP for CAMP tryout, then determine

This would create over 51M in additional cap space, but also leave the team with a lot of holes.
LT, CB, FS, TE, and QB all need some level of attention in FA to fill out roster.

Key Free Agents: (I would look to re-sign all of these guys)
    Brian Winters
    Tanner Purdum
Marcus Williams (depth, challenge for starting role)
    Wesley Johnson (depth interior C/G)

    Re-sign for tryouts
    Ben Ijalana (swing T depth)
    Bruce Carter (backup ILB)
Antonio Allen (backup S and specials)

2018 FA might want to re-sign this year
    Enunwa

Mac needs a smart 2017 FA, needs a 2017 QB plan, and of course needs to build the future through the draft.
It's an important offseason to get this ship back on course present and future....even if the coaching lacks.
