Also anyone who wanted to keep Rex last year but doesn't want him now is a fickle moron.

There was nothing to be learned this year. The team wasn't going to be solved in one off season, especially when they could barely sign anyone. Team was a mess and to me this was a good year of progress on defense, but the team is still square 1 on offense.

It will take 1 or 2 more solid drafts and ability to find a good QB to really be competitive.

There are some coaches that can coach who have a good QB, some who can coach who haven't found a good QB and then there are some that can't find their way out of a paper bag. To me Rex is in the area of can coach but hasn't had the QB.

No coach in the league coaches both sides of the ball, but he can game plan well defensively to take away many teams strengths. Realistically he has someone like Marty Morningwheg to coach offense for him just like McCarthy and Capers, Harbaugh and Fangio, Payton and Ryan... Etc. There are still in game things that Rex does and stubbornness to stay with veterans that is head scratching at times, but no coach is perfect. Many coaches can have their problems covered by good QB play though.

The 3-4 suits Wilkerson's strengths. Just blows up a guard/tackle or guard/center combo. He'd be a good 4-3 end but no where near as impactful. Rex needs to establish some way to guard receivers on the outside because Cromartie and Milliner have been pretty awful. If they're struggling in man, you can't play man all the time. Outside of that I don't see how much more a coach can do. Would Andy Reid have fixed this team and made them a contender? Bill Cowher?Look at Shanahan. One playoff appearance and dreadful all other years. Who do you suggest we get right now to coach this team? You can't overhaul the roster and overhaul coaching staff. That's a horrible mesh. I don't understand what people don't get about this.

It's not about defending the head coach as much as it logically thinking about the best chance to get into the playoffs and try to make a run at this within a 3 year span.

    This thread is stupid
    ------------------

We have drastically overpaid, very avg./below avg players to monster contract(sanchez, Harris, Holmes, Cro). This is 100% Tanny's fault, and I cannot imagine Idzik doing something as retarded.

Even in their best seasons, sanchez/Cro/Holmes did not deserve anything close to what was awarded to them.

    -------------------------

When four out of the top five who are eating up about 45% of your cap space and contribute as little as this group does, you are not going anywhere in this league.

Let this offseason play out, I really do expect us to be in really good shape next year.

I'll admit to softening my criticism of some of Rex's personnel decisions over the past few weeks, in that regard he seems to have a philosophy that didn't always work out which myself and others didn't always agree with. However, the fruit of some of those decisions is starting to show on the field, proving that those decisions aren't as cut and dry as they might seem. A couple of those examples would be sticking with Calvin Pace in the twilight of his career, basically shouting at the haters that he can still get the job done. Last year he couldn't though and that made Rex look foolish. He brings him back this year and it looks like Rex is preparing to go right to wearing around a dunce cap, but here Calvin is 9 sacks later with 2 games left to play. Maybe he got healthier this year, certainly he benefitted from the influx of talent in the front 7. Whatever the case though it's a prime example of Rex showing that he isn't such a dummy for sticking with "his players" after all. Maybe a couple of other times he trended towards that philosophy and it didn't work out, it could've if things that aren't immediately obvious to fans had gone differently. If nothing else at least it shows the error of underestimating Rex's defensive expertise and ability to take a flawed player, scheme towards their strengths while hiding their weaknesses and create strong production.

Another one is his maddening decision to keep playing Milliner over and over again when he was the biggest shit show going in early/mid season. H-A-T-E-D watching it when it was going down, having Walls come in and look somewhat competent made it even worse. Dee looked so lost early that it was hard to even see the potential that led to being a Rex pick at #9. But he stuck with him and the past few games that potential is really starting to show. It's not saying much as putrid as Cromartie is this year but Dee has certainly outplayed him overall the last 3 games or so I'd say. Now I look at that and say hey wait, if that's true why not bench Cro to see some more of Walls then these last few weeks? But then that's getting back to a "Rex's players" decision, and who knows how that difference of opinion is going to be viewed in a year or two.

Clock management, challenges, 4th down decision making. Those are the thorns in Rex's side, the exposure of his academic shortcomings. Another thing that pisses me off, and I'm not sure why this happens or who it's coming from but it's been going on for years is the tendency to have a guy make a big play on offense and he gets pulled off the field right after. Happens all the time with Winslow, then Geno or Sanchez in years past would make a big throw and here comes the wild cat or some obvious run. It's different with a halfback but Ivory ran the ball about 10 straight times to seal the New England game with no problem, yet everytime he breaks one since then out he goes.

I imagine that those problems wouldn't prevent a top QB from leading this team with Rex to a Super Bowl win which is all the question really comes down to. It would be good if he could learn and improve on those mistakes, he probably won't but there are things he does so well on defense that definitely offset some other minor shortcomings. Given the string of hopeless HCs in my lifetime and potential grenades that so many HC candidates present, I'd like to see Rex get a chance to find that QB, (or better yet let MM and Idzik find the QB for him) and see if he can finish building something here rather than blowing it all up and starting from scratch.

Rex is a defensive coach whose defense has become progressively worse with a roster he helped shape. His offense has remained mostly stagnant throughout his tenure. Now we want to wait for the offense to be rebuilt under his watch?

What gives anyone any confidence in Rex overseeing an offensive rebuild? He helped downgrade the side of the ball his expertise is in yet were supposed to think he's going to help build a good offense?

Sounds like a recipe for disaster to me.

If Ryan has been such an abysmal failure in utilizing and developing talent where is the list of all those guys heading for the Pro Bowl who used to be here that he let get away?

This draft was the first draft Rex had that featured full 7 picks. [8 if you include Revis. 4th went to Chris Ivory, a pick well spent.] Last season, Jets didn't have their 4th and 5th. This gets worse as you look further.

With Tannenbaum's propensity to trade the picks away, [he's been doing that shit with Mangini AND Rex, mind you.] I do not think it is fair to put the burden of depleted roster on Ryan. If anything, find me any other HC whose GM kept dealing the picks away. Show me where in the totem pole he is, in terms of Wins and Losses.

And that's not all - I've been harping out for umpteenth time now. If your majority of cap space is locked tight into a few fringe players, the quality of the rest suffers. Tell me that is on Ryan too. Tell me Ryan gives out these god-damn awful and stupid contracts to multiple players. Tell me how this is all his fault again. I'll believe you if you can say that.

None of it is his fault. Tannenbaum built the Jets to be a winner when the stadium was selling PSL's. He did it. Tannenbaum cleared the cap and left a full draft because this was clearly a rebuilding process and Tannenbaum had the Jets set up to clear the cap and have multiple picks.

Woody decided he couldn't rebuild without a scape goat so he brought in a new GM. Idzik isn't Tannenbaum and if he wants to stay GM needs to get the coaching staff on the same page as he is or he is going to be one and done.

Rex's only fault is he didn't win a SB when the Jets were built to win one and he didn't win enough to protect his GM. It's clear the Jets need to rebuild and they have the money and picks to do it. The question is does Idzik think Rex is the kind of HC who can develop a QB to lead the Jets and a philosophy to win in today's NFL.

Rex has done some good things but he is clearly a flawed coach. The Ravens clearly made the right move not hiring him and their D didn't miss a beat.

The Ravens had major issues building an offense even with Brian Billick as the head coach. They didn't want to hire a defensive head coach when the offense was the thing holding them back.

I suspect that if the Jets decide to let Rex go it will be to bring in a head coach on the other side of the ball.

Note that Brian Billick knows NFL offenses as well as anybody in the game and he couldn't turn Kyle Boller into an NFL QB. You have to have the talent to make things work on either side of the ball.

The thing that's kind of amazing about Rex is that he has had personnel holes somewhere on his defense every season on the Jets and still kept them consistently competitive. That's what spending 1st round picks on that side of the ball will do for you, if you hit the picks.

Since the Jets hired Ryan and the Ravens went to an "Offensive" minded HC the Jets have had one season where they let up less points then the Ravens 09 when the Jets were ranked 1 and the Ravens were ranked 3. Apparently having a competent O in today's NFL may have more to do with points allowed then having a dominating D?

As far as being competitive, is 6 and 8 competitive? How about 8 & 8 or 6 and 10? The games are going to be played and the NFL has a huge stake in teams being "competitive" and guess what most NFL teams are competitive.

I live in AZ. The Cardinals had a very good D last year and didn't win. The Cardinals have a very good d this year and will have a winning record. They brought in an offensive HC. The Jets need a HC who can actually be part of the process on developing the QB, the O, special teams and the D. Rex may be that guy but he hasn't shown it so far.

Billivk thought he was smarter than he was, he thought they'd be better in 2001 w/ Grbac and that Dilfer wasn't a key piece- he was wrong. he thought he could win w/ Boller- he was wrong, he thought he could win w/ an old McNair- he was wrong.

Great offensive mind but too smart and confident for his own good.

I'd love to have Arians coaching here. That was a great hire for Arizona and an example of the type of head coach this team should hire if/when they let Rex go. An offensive mind who has had success working with QBs at various stops. Arians is also loved by his players. Too bad he will have to be saddled with competing with San Fran and Seattle for the foreseeable future.

Ozzie Newsome is not the retard that Tannenbaum is. And that means Ravens squad is better than Jets squad is, all across the board. Maybe you can call DL a wash, but that's about the only spot Jets can say so.

the Jets were every bit as talented on both sides of the ball as the Ravens were from 08-10.

'08 w/o Rex: bal makes title game, jets miss playoffs(in Brady-less division)
'09 & '10 w/ rex: jets make 2 title games, bal makes none

so assuming talent was close(I'd still give the edge to Baltimore in talent) then rex did a better job, right?

Rex only lost two title games. Harbaugh actually won a VLT.
