Without looking it up online... Can you name me the backup QBs for... Kansas City (Mahomes). Buffalo (Allen). Baltimore (Jackson). Chargers (Herbert). Cleveland (Mayfield). Pittsburgh (Big Ben). Buccaneers (Brady). Green Bay (Rodgers). Seattle (Wilson). Arizona (Murray). Etc. Etc. Because I know, I can't. And who were the backup QBs throughout Brady and Manning's (entire) careers? Look. When you've got yourself a reliable and true Franchise QB? You don't have to consistently worry about having an awesome backup because if anything happens to your Franchise QB, your season is over with 99.9% of the time to begin with. The only real reasons us Jets fans stress and worry about "BACKUPS" is because we haven't featured a Franchise QB since dating back to legendary Joe Namath (to a lesser extent, Chad Pennington). If Zach Wilson needs a backup QB? We're in trouble.
Zach Wilson is going to need a backup. It is simply unreasonable to think he is going to play all 16 games. I would be very surprised. its funny on your list you mention several QBs that benefitted greatly from learning behind a veteran QB their rookie years: Mahomes, Brady, Rodgers, Jackson & Mayfield.
To each our own. I'd rather see what J.D saw in James Morgan in order to draft him within the 4th round come both training camp and preseason before bringing in yet another career losing Shitztragic/McCown type. What did Mark Brunell/Fitzpatrick/McCown ever do for the development and progression for the likes of Sanchez/Geno/Sam Darnold, outside of absolutely nothingness? You want your young QB to have success? Find him a good QB coach and OC.
They WERE the backups (Mahomes/Brady) Rodgers/Jackson/Mayfield). However once becoming starters they never needed no stinking backup. Brady watched Bledsoe go 5-11 and then 0-2. Drew Bledsoe had nothing to do with Brady's greatness (Charli Weis deserves a lot of credit). Patrick Mahomes has been blessed with a real QB guro in Andy Reid (never needed no Alex Smith lol). I do agree. Rodgers learned a lot from Favre.
I'm not sure that Rodgers learned a lot from Favre. Rodgers is much better, much smarter than Favre ever was. I forget who GB's QB Coach was, but he was pretty darned good.
The Jets have a 1st time QB coach and a 1st time OC. To go along with QBs that have taken zero NFL snaps
Can't be any worse than what we just had though A nice fresh canvas waiting for a splodge of green success
15 games (14-1), 390/588 (66.3%), 38 TD's/6 INTs with a QB Rating of 108.2. Please explain how Patrick Mahomes "needed a backup QB". His trash backup in "Chad Henne went 0-1. But, ok. PS: You don't need a backup when you've got Andy Reid as a true QB Guro (he's won with every QB from McNabb, Garcia, Alex Smith, Mahomes etc etc).
Oh but I did (I watch all Playoff games especially AFC) so please stop trying to act as if Henne "won the game for Mahomes and K.C"; because he didn't. Mahomes had KC up 19-3 by the time Henne had to come into the game. Henne was outscored 3-14 (-11 pts) without Mahomes man and all he did was throw the ball 8x with 0 TDs/1 INT and an awful QB Rating of only 59.4. He STINKS! You telling me Mahomes "needed Henne to get to the SB" is extreme. That great backup tried his hardest to eliminate K.C from the playoffs, that's all he did.
I think it's funny how it's OK for a kid who's never taken one snap starting 17 games, but a second kid who's never taken a single snap can't possibly fill in for a game. JD drafted James Morgan to be our backup QB. Let the man learn right along with Zach Wilson. New offense, new playbook, have at it. Zack and James will accomplish more by learning together and comparing notes every day than by having ZW learning on his own with an aloof BUQB Vet just waiting for his chance to rip the ball from Zack and make a new name for himself, get another payday. I'd rather give Morgan the job that will give us an experienced BU next season than to be right back in the same boat we're in right now when it's really gonna matter.
It's hard to go out and get a really good backup when you've already got an established star QB who you've committed a large salary cap chunk to. But that is absolutely not our situation, nor has it been in quite a while. look, this is not a dire need, it's just my explanation as to why I hope we get Foles here on JD's terms.
"Mahomes needed a veteran backup to get to the Super Bowl last year actually, but okay". Sounded like it to me but oh well no big deal man I just hope JD saw something special in James Morgan to select him in the 4th round (I blew a draft day head gasket over that pick). But now I'm actually pretty excited to see how he looks in both training camp and especially preseason.
What happened from 2020 to 2021 that caused you to blow a gasket over him to now feeling pretty excited ?
Well for starters... Corey Davis. Alijah Vera-Tucker. Elijah Moore. Michael Carter. Keelan Cole. (Possibly Kenny Yeboah). Etc. I just wanted Sam Darnold to have some weapons surrounding him. Would've really liked Gabriel Davis there in the 4th. Glad to (now) see Zach Wilson with some promising weapons on offense (something we didn't get to see with Sam).
isn't geno smith backing up wilson in seattle?i know mason rudolph is backing up ben. jordan love in GB. TB just drafted trask. That's all I can think of off the top of my head personally
