Here is the interview: https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/38491223/joe-namath-blasts-zach-wilson-jets-reaffirm-faith-qb The jist of it is that Namath thinks Zach is done and he would indeed never play him again, does not have what it takes behind the ears. In particular he was the angriest when Zach sat down on the play where no one even touched him. Saying he is never going to be a good player. He goes on to blame GM for not getting the right players. Particularly mentioned the front (OLine) and QB. He thinks we need a new GM, even if Rodgers does come back. Finally, doesn't think coaching is good. Brought an example of a RB arguing with the coach. Saying they act too lovey dovey, etc... Would get rid of coaching too. Said it was the lowest point as a fan. It seems like Joe Willie has had enough of losing. He does think that had Rodgers not been injured, he would make things a lot better, but lady luck wasn't on our side.
I have a wild conspiracy theory (I apologize if it was mentioned before): What if Aaron Rodgers is behind JD and RS keeping Zach on the field as a starter? Maybe he doesn't want a vet coming in and stealing the glory before he gets one last shot at it next year. Again just a wild theory, but like many have mentioned countless times, JD and Saleh CAN'T be THAT stupid?
OK, so aside from reading "quotes" I just watched a little of him actually saying said quotes (not the whole PC) C'mon... that's a guy visibly saying shit he doesnt really believe. Eyes dont lie, and his looked defeated as he knows Zach really isnt "the guy". That was Press conference "coach speak"... he's probably a terrible poker player.
There's no way in hell any head coach in his right mind would keep rolling Zach out there. Something else is going on.
Said it in another thread, JD has to have a press conference to explain himself. It’s his decision. Enough with having Saleh try to cover for him, as no one believes Zach is an option including Saleh and the entire locker room. If JD does nothing here the team is gonna check out. He owes it to the team and coaches to try one maybe even two alternative options. The season is gonna happen no matter what, and we are seeing other teams look functional with backups seeing playing time.
Wow ..Joe Namath is the most positive and supportive guy on earth. Especially when it comes to his old team Unusual for such a blunt assessment but Joe is the Champ
What is this “unquestioned QB” shit? Why is ANYBODY unquestioned? I agree I think it’s coachspeak…but how he can stand there and say shit like that I don’t get…I’d rather have him say Zach needs to play better or we’ll move on to someone who will
Is this a professional organization? Or just Woodys scam? The NFL has to step in and provide decent management like getting they did getting GM George Young for the Giants Only answer is to Police the Johnsons ..seriously
It looked like Baghdad Bob got frog marched up to the podium. His body language was very revealing as it looked as if he was forcing the words from a script written for him to recite.
This is what drives me up the wall. Almost every single great quarterback - legitimate all-time great quarterback - with rare exception, has been benched before and during their prime during one game or another, simply because they didn't have it that day. How hard would it have been for Saleh/Douglas to bench Zach at the half and - no matter the outcome of the game - simply say, "Zach didn't have it today. It wasn't all on him, but we needed to make a change. We fully expect to get off to a better start next week and for him to start next week." Even if all of that stuff after he "didn't have it today" is simply B.S. coach-speak, between the lines it makes it clear to Zach, his teammates, the fans, etc., that no one is on scholarship in the NFL and if you (or anyone else on this roster) are not getting the job done, someone else is going to be stepping in for them. That is far better than the gaslighting we've been subject to, essentially admonishing the fans for calling out what we see (and asking your own fans to ignore the commentary from professionals across the league that also say as much), and insisting everyone is wrong and they - the Jets brain trust - are right. . . Even if Zach is among the worst three QB's in the NFL over the past three seasons.
The guy sucks, but Hackett, Saleh, and the entire front office of the jets organization are not using him in a way that maximizes his strengths and minimizes his weaknesses. I told in another thread how the best way to run an offense with Zach is to run Breece and Dalvin into the ground and have Zach make a throw or two on a drive for a chunk play. Use his legs. Move the pocket. Play action. Rollouts. You get the point. Breece had 4 carries in the cowboys game. 4! And this is against a team that is weak against the run and can rush the passer better than anyone. 4 carries. I turn on the jets game for one series last week and what do I see? Zach back there in the shotgun, with no confidence at all, a weak offensive line against a strong pass rush, with no rb in the backfield, for 3 straight plays in a row in the pouring rain. I immediately turned it off. Seriously, a 4th grader could coach better than that, it’s atrocious. I’m not saying the guy is a world beater but jeez, at least coach in a way that makes sense. How Hacket thinks this is a good idea is beyond me, how Saleh allows this to go on without intervention is absolutely absurd, and how all the higher ups don’t say anything to Saleh about it is dumbfounding.
My bet is that Woody's the one fueling this love affair with Wilson. Let's face it: over the time Woody has owned this team, there've been a succession of HCs, OCs and GMs. The only constants are idiotic decisions and Woody. Saleh is becoming Aaron Boone: a nice guy who's in way over his head and who spouts a constant stream of positive, delusional bullshit that's deserving of a laugh track.
all you need to know about this team. IF this statement alone doesn't cause rift in the locker room the players in there don't care about winning only a about money. "He's our unquestioned quarterback. He's not the reason we lost yesterday," Saleh said.
I remember when lisping Pete Kendall was thrown out there as a human shield week after week to explain away the suck. It was like being Press Secretary to the President of the United States only worse. No way Coach Saleh is acting upon his own advisement. He is covering himself and toeing the company line. That rube Woody Johnson is the biggest hump ever born. Chump. Whatever. Can't he just go be rich in a corner somewhere and make anonymous charitable donations to some disease of the moment instead of being the unwanted embarrassing face of this pet rock of his a/k/a the Jets.
Seriously now. He has no choice but to sing the party line with the press. What do you want him to say to the press. “ Yes he sucks bad, really bad, but the guy behind him is even worth. I told that to Joe, but the owner wanted nothing to do with more salary pressures and to add one more QB”
I totally agree with the fact that Saleh looks like a brainless idiot at these press conferences talking up Zach Wilson. Wilson was the first QB in modern history to finish last in passer rating two years in a row, and then they bring him back this year as the primary backup(????). He looks like a 15 year old middle school kid scrimmaging the varsity. His self sack yesterday actually made me laugh as I thought of how Chris Simms predicted him to be as good as Mahomes. I do, however, wonder if Saleh is taking orders from Woody or from Douglas. I think it is DOUGLAS, not Woody. Why the hell would Woody be so protective of Zach? I can easily see why Douglas would because Douglas and his flunky Rex Hogan gushed repeatedly before the 2021 draft (and afterward) that Zach was gonna be so great. In fact, other than 2022, Douglas has basically wasted our first pick in three out of four years. Becton (2020), Wilson (2021), and McDonald (2023) were in my opinion terrible picks. And I said that about Wilson 3 months before he was picked. Yes, I know I am not being fair to McDonald, but if he is so great why the hell isn't he out there? Why was he inactive week 2? . I think the jets have had a grand total of one sack the last two games. I have changed my mind on Douglas. The can move his ass anytime as far as I am concerned.
There Is A LOT you can do as a HC. One of which, shouldn't be to try and play make believe. He's acting like this fanbase and everyone listening to his BS are morons. You can't go In front of this media and talk out of your ass In that way. Seriously? Are we as fans just supposed to pretend like everything he says Is good? Everything he does Is good? Don't come at me like I shouldn't be fucking annoyed because I have every right to be so... I don't like what he's saying, fuck what logic you think Is there with that, I'm tired of his bullshit. I'm tired of this fucking insanity. It has to change. It has to. He sits there and fucking LIES through his teeth or he simply doesn't know shit about football after all. Which one Is It? Those are the only options. He Is trying to convince us that Zach Willson Is so much better than last year, that he does all these good things In practice. blah..blah Yet, he always looks like the same shitty QB by the end of the game on Sunday's. It doesn't add up. I'm tired of hearing It. Enough Is enough.
