i imagine chan's sales pitch would be something like this " did you see what i did for ryan fitzpatrick last year?"
Why stop at Fitz? He's made some absolute turds look like competent NFL quarterbacks. Fitz is his biggest success story yet but he's done it for others. See: Kordell Stewart.
thats exactly why i am fairly comfortable with what ever jag they trot out there. although i think griffin can be better than average with gailey marsh and decker
It's all about staying healthy. I may actually like RG3 more in terms of the future and he has world's more ability than Fitzpatrick does. I think I'll take healthy RG3 over Fitz next year anyways. No one really knows what Griffin's ceiling is. We saw Fitzpatrick's ceiling last year IMO.
Hope it's on the cheap...and it doesn't preclude not bringing Fitz back. Somebody's gotta do their due diligence w/RG to see if he can resurrect himself. Why not us. I wouldn't count him out. Won't surprise me if he does it. Would they bring RG3 in on top of retaining Fitz? Seems like a good scenerio if it's doable within our cap restraints
Living in the DC area I have watched the whole RGIII thing play out, from savior to scapegoat. Shanahan ruined RG and he wasn't the same the next year coming off that injury but the fans here (much like our own) turned on him way too fast. Coaching changes, bad play calling, terrible defense, misquotes all played a part in his demise. I don't think he is done in this league and I believe his style of play would be perfect for Chan's system. I lobbied hard for Fitz last year too even when he was still on the Texans. I would be comfortable with Fitz but excited about the upside of Griffen. Honestly it would be nice to cut Geno and sign them both.
I think that's because with the exception of a few great players, and a few bright periods where we had more than a few good-to-great players, we've had so many players that were busts or just flat out sucked. The mediocre ones were the only thing we had to root for.
I'm hesitant to agree but I do. He's got all of the athletic tools to be a successful quarterback it's just putting it all together. And I think that Chan will make it as easy as possible for him. I mean it's kind of hard to screw up when you have two 1000 yard receivers and one of the better pass/run backs in the league.
i think signing both just muddies the waters too much. i liked how bowles handled things last year and would assume he would do it the same way with a clear starter until that starter messes it up. with fitz and rg3 that would be a little tougher to do. i would take fitz for continuity but if he isn't ready to cave i would sign rg3 and move on. i don't see the risk as being greater than hoping fitz can duplicate last year, with maybe 2 less ints
bowles doesn't seem to do qb competitions so its either hand it to him or hand it to geno but someone is going to be handed the postition
I'd prefer a competition but if someone has to be handed the job it should be Geno because he's been here and knows the system.
i'd have no problem with that, just wondering under what premise rg3 would sign. ftr, i hate qb competitions, i think they hold the entire offense back. even more now with the limited practice time. i love the way bowles handled the qb situation the entire year. decisiveness is key.
Going with RGIII would be going from one of the best qbs in the league in seeing the field (identifying coverages, reading blitzes) in Fitz to one of the worst. RGIII still needs a ton of coaching and our offense would have to change. Fitz keeps our offense running well and the ball into our playmakers. RGIII would require a different offense and that is not best for the team. Stop lowballing Fitz and give him what he has earned.
Two things I think factor in: How much they like Petty. And, the all or nothing potential with RG. If RG gets hurt, or can't get it done we're kinda fucked. They're trying to win this season again imo. I believe we know what we have with Fitz and don't see any reason why he can't at least come close to what he did last year. I don't see Fitz falling off next year, with us that is. I don't see that. It would be security for them this season. Anyway, it would be fun to get a look at RG3.
Fitz isn't one of the best QBs in the league. That's just silly. He a JAG who had a career year. End of story. Fitz may keep our offense running well, but he puts the ball into opposing teams' hands too often too. Fitz isn't being lowballed. He's being offered a fair contract for this stage of his career commensurate with his playing ability. If Fitz were truly one of the best QBs in the league and it was a matter of Mac low-balling him, Fitz would be fielding offers from a number of teams and would have already signed somewhere else. It's worth of noting that NO OTHER TEAM has any interest in Fitz. Zip. Nada. It's not Mac's fault that Lurie, the guy in Houston and Washington are morons. I'd rather have Fitz back too, but we're not gonna wait much longer. The Jets hold all the leverage. If he doesn't sign soon, he can go start for the Browns, be a backup somewhere if someone will have him, or retire.
I would love to have a guy in place and I agree while I'm not a Fitzpatrick fan I want him back for the sake of continuity as well. But if we bring in RG III it makes no sense to anoint him the guy, he needs to earn it. He's not an established enough guy to just hand a job to, he's not Aaron Rodgers or Brady or Beees or even Cutler or Alex Smith. I agree that competitions holds up the offense but it needs to be done.
RG3 would add some excitement. I generally don't like running QB's because they tend to get injured a lot - and obviously RG3 falls in line with that, but he does have a shit load of talent. Young, talented QB's without warts generally aren't available in the NFL because GM's don't let them get away. At the right price it's certainly worth a risk to see if he can stay healthy and work in Gailey's offense. We could get lucky and find a long term answer or just end up with a QB who can't stay healthy and didn't crush the cap. It would probably mean the end of Fitz here, but he was never the long term answer anyway and if he wants $15 million/year he can fuck himself anyway.
