Mawae, Ellis, Mo Lewis, and Snell would be at the top of my list. In terms of Abraham and Meshawn......this is the Ring of HONOR. those two are no where near the discussion.
Mawae has one less All pro selection as a Jet. Pro bowl is not the same as ALL Pro which is much harder to achieve. Mawae came over as an FA his career is a compilation of Seattle, NY Jets and TN. Powell did play when he was done elsewhere for a couple of years but he never played at a high level for any other team. Mawae should go into the HOF based on his play in all 3 cities. Powell was simple a more dominating tackle in what was essentially a career as a NY Jets player.
Mawae also has four 2nd team All Pro selections as a Jet, Powell 1 so that's 6 AP teams for Mawae as a Jet in 8 seasons vs. 4 AP teams for Marvin in 9 seasons as a Jet
I don't think they sold them in stores, I got mine custom made. At that time the only jerseys you could get in stores were ken O'Brien, Blair Thomas, Al Toon and maybe Rob Moore
I was with you until Pennington. He finished only one full 16 game season as a Jet starting QB. Got to have some longevity to get in.
A name who I have barely seen mentioned is Joe Fields. He was the second best center in the AFC for a decade unfortunately his career began a year after a guy named Mike Webster, so he goes widely unnoticed and unappreciated. Played 12 plus seasons and was a 3 time All Pro. I personally believe he belongs in before Mawae who played half his career elsewhere. Chrebet, Lewis, Ellis and Snell round out my top 5.
Why is Ellis deserving? He did have only two great seasons, mainly because defenses were concentrating on Abraham, who was a far better player. He got a huge contract because he was expected to be a pass rusher. He played a long time, but other than one great playoff game late in his career vs the Pats, he had an average career. He is one of the most overrated Jets of the recent era. There were so many games where he was just invisible. You don't make the Ring of Honor for 5 sacks a season and 3 tackles a game. Take away 2003 and 2004 and Ellis is indistinguishable from Bryan Thomas. Does Thomas belong also? He had a long career and played in a lot of playoff games too.
Ellis never Mawae -- maybe the evangelical and union agitator ring of honor, not the Jets Chrebet should be NEXT then Kenny O, Fields (if not already in) Powell and Mehl
I don't believe in a kicker getting into any "Ring of Honor" (aside from the fact that - imho - this "Ring of Honor" thing is corny Cowboy copy cat crap) but to say that Leahy AT BEST was mediocre is patently absurd. Kickers go through a rough patch, and at one time Leahy was no exception. But the brass (inc. ST coach Larry Pasquale) knew that the "more than mediocre ones" eventually come out of it. Leahy WAS so-so the 1st half of his career, but raised it and became an above average kicker the 2nd half of his career. Held a consecutive FG team record for 23 years, voted team MVP in '90. Mediocre at best? I guarantee you Larry Pasquale would disagree with you as well.
I don't think we can judge Revis yet. I still think there's an outside possibility it wont work out for him TB and he is cut in a few years. He can then come back home
Freeman McNeil, Rich Caster, Lance Mehl, Randy Rasmussen, Wayne Chrebet and Marvin Powell, Mickey Shuler, Pat Leahy, Kevin Mawae are all slam dunks. Boozer and Snell also.
I also forgot to add LS James Dearth. Seemed to be a big fan favorite on this board. Look a like to Jay Glazer
He's a better option than Hasty and some of the other guys mentioned. He was hurt a lot but every time he was healthy he would lead us to the playoffs. He is very worthy. he had 2 great sack seasons, that's very different that 2 great seasons. He played much of his career as a 3-4 end not expected to get double digit sacks and he was great at his job. his best sack season was 2003 when Abe barely played and his other PB season was in 2009 long after Abe was gone so that throws that theory away. He wasn't about sacks, he was about all around play and he was really good at it. very few, if any, of the ROH players were "great" players. There are only a couple of HOFers so if we are judging by greatness alone that ring would be pretty empty. He played very well for us for a long time and was a key player in the greatest stretch in jets history. Bryan Thomas was a good player, he wasn't anywhere near as good or as important as Shaun ellis. The man was never reliable, he would missed extra points nearly every year. he held a consecutive FG record for us, what does this tell us? he kicked for nearly 20 years and at the time of his retirement he had kicked for more than half of the years the franchise was in existence so he should have had a record like that. voted team MVP of a 6-10 team that was in the bottom half of scoring in the league. That was more about the position players than the K. The man kicked 3 FGs over 40 yds that season. Mediocre may be a little too kind. he was GREAT at what he did but he is a LS and I doubt he'll get recognized. We have been so lucky to have great long snappers since John Hudson.
