Well, Seattle ante'd up the big money which I was not expecting. It will be interesting to see how this plays out for them. If the cap rises a lot they're probably ok. If it's stagnant it's an iffy proposition.
It was $56M and 4 years added on to this year so it averages out to $11.49M over the next 5 years http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/seahawks/2014/05/07/richard-sherman-contract/8808721/
If that's how they got it done then I'm understanding the deal. A $11.5M cap number for the best CB in football is still high but it isn't insanely off the charts.
Another article I was reading before implied the $40M guaranteed was at $10M a year and the rest was in incentives but I can't seem to find that article again. No matter I guess but the $11.5M is certainly a more apt representation than $14M previously posted.
I was wrong on prediction. It'll cost Sea later. They have a load of players due for the paycheck, this signing will bite them in the ass. Funny thing is that this would not have happened if JI was still there.
If the reports on the way it caps out are true then Seattle has done what the Jets did with Revis in 2010. They've given Sherman a lot of money but structured in a way that the deal appears bigger than it is going to be on the cap. They took this year, and added it into the deal and thereby reduced the overall cap hit by close to 3 million a season over the last 4 years of the new deal. Sherman's cap number for 2015 to 2018 should be under $12M a year. Not sure if the reports are true but if they are then Seattle found a partial way out of their dilemma by using cap space in 2014 to lessen the hits down the road.
Here's an article that says $40 Million guaranteed. http://xfinity.comcast.net/articles/sports-nfl/20140507/20140507142338317492408/ Seattle, Sherman agree to 4-year extension By TIM BOOTH, AP Wed May 7, 7:27 PM UTC Richard Sherman is the latest member of the Seattle Seahawks secondary to be locked up for the long term. The All-Pro cornerback is getting paid the best of anyone. Sherman signed a four-year contract extension Wednesday with the Seahawks, a deal that makes him one of the highest-paid cornerbacks in NFL history. Sherman announced the deal on his website ahead of a news conference that was called by the team. Sherman wrote that the extension is for $57.4 million with $40 million guaranteed. It's unclear whether the deal incorporates the final year of his rookie contract in 2014 or is a completely new deal starting in 2015. Sherman wrote on his website that there is no other team or city that he would want to play for. ''The goal has always been to stay in Seattle and continue to play for the Seahawks,'' Sherman wrote. ''With this chapter closed, I can continue to focus on what is important - defending our Super Bowl Championship and being the best cornerback in the NFL.'' Sherman's deal wraps up a solid offseason for the Seahawks prior to the NFL draft. Seattle re-signed defensive end Michael Bennett before the start of free agency. They then reached extensions with coach Pete Carroll through 2016 and a four-year, $40 million extension with All-Pro free safety Earl Thomas. Now Sherman, a two-time All-Pro selection, is locked up as well. Copyright 2014 STATS LLC
Now they just gotta pray that in 2 years Sherman won't bitch about how underpaid he is and threaten holdout.
We haven't seen the terms yet. No idea if the leak about the terms is accurate, although the basis for it is a tweet from Sherman himself.
Yeah, that's a huge risk. Paying any player a significant percentage of your overall cap is playing with fire. You need to be right AND you need to be lucky.
Very questionable decisions by Seattle. Paying Earl Thomas and Sherman is A LOT. Next season they will have to pay Russell to.
