Having Gannon - or Pennington, for that matter - come in as an assistant QB coach isn't going to turn Sanchez into a game manager. What made both Gannon and Pennington effective was their willingness to play within their abilities...until 2007 when Pennington thought he had to do everything himself and started throwing up picks. Gannon would probably be working with Sanchez on his throwing motion, foot work, reading the coverage and understanding where the ball needs to go in relation to the receiver...and maybe help him understand when to check down. The majority of the decision making is still going to be taught by Schottenheimer because he is the offensive coordinator and it is his offense's philosophy that is supposed dictate where the ball goes. Basically, bringing in Gannon is not going to turn Sanchez into a checkdown/7 yard max route passer unless that is what Schottenheimer wants him to do.
Gannon was on the Sirius Blitz today. Briefly mentioned that he is going to work with Sanchez. But when asked about how the division will turn out, he still thinks the Pats will finish a game ahead of the Jets due to Brady's experience. Some asshole also called out Gannon's criticism of Al Davis, saying that Al Davis was smart enough to sign Gannon. Gannon went on to nicely mention the many draft failures of Al Davis....one after another. It was a very polite bitch slap.
Update on this: http://sports.espn.go.com/new-york/nfl/news/story?id=5259919 Gannon, Sanchez talk decision-making Mark Sanchez is still recovering from offseason knee surgery but hopes to be ready for minicamp in June. The New York Jets quarterback is also working on the mental side of his game by reaching out to a former NFL MVP. Rich Gannon, the NFL's MVP in 2002 for the Oakland Raiders, worked with Sanchez for two days recently, studying film at the Jets' complex in Florham Park, N.J. "The great thing about Mark is he doesn't just want to be good; he wants to be great," Gannon told USA Today. "And he's willing to put in the work to get there. "He has a very bright future." Although Sanchez helped the Jets reach the AFC Championship Game in his rookie season, he endured an up-and-down year where he threw an AFC-worst 20 interceptions, was sacked 26 times and fumbled 10 times. Gannon told the newspaper that he and Sanchez talked about making the right decisions on third down and in the fourth quarter. "We watched the interception and sack reels until 8 o'clock at night," Gannon told USA Today. "Then he had to get treatment the next morning. I was up at 6 and in at 7 watching the film with him. "I really applaud a guy like that who wants to get better." Gannon told the newspaper that he was impressed by Sanchez's progress in his recovery from arthroscopic knee surgery in February. Sanchez had the patella-stabilizing ligament in his left knee repaired in February, and he has participated in individual and passing drills since organized team activities began last month. "This kid is back already throwing and is much further along than I thought he would be," Gannon told USA Today. "The goal is to have him back almost 100 percent by June 14 minicamp. He's throwing the ball particularly well, even though he told me he's not 100 percent yet with that knee. "I don't think it's going to be an issue."
Wow. I'm just excited Rich Gannon is mentoring the Sanchize. Rich was one of the best in his prime. Hopefully he can pass some of his positive abilities over to Sanchez.
I couldn't post the link because I'm not 50 yet, or so they say. There is an article in the USA Today sports section about Sanchez being mentored by former MVP (Gannon). Thought it might be the same as the espn one above, but when comparing found the espn version to be a highlight level whereas the USA today article provides a lot more meat to the story. Talks about Sanchez having a very strong work ethic and the drive to want to be successful. He is studying film from last year working on correcting the mistakes he made. That gets me pumpep. I heard Browning Nagel's problem was he liked playing golf more then football. Now that I think about it, can't blame him because I like playing golf more then my job myself.
What happens when Brunell joins the team. Gannon and Brunell...Too many people advising Sanchez. Not a good idea
AT the end of the day I hope it works out for the best... Remember Lawrence Taylor advising and mentoring The Ghost two year ago?
Hey uh sorry for the bump but didnt Gannon work on Film with Aaron Rodgers before Rodgers was a starter?
I know we joke about Paul but he is an excellent teacher for a QB and a teacher of offensive football. His problem was always playcalling.
