Don't get me wrong, I believe Mariota is a good QB and if they can get him a superstar WR along with that running game, I think that team will be a contender for a long time. However they can't be happy that they are 23rd in the league in passing, if they can get to be a top 10 -15 passing team then that will increase their chances of getting deeper into the playoffs, he has to make big plays in order for them to be a serious SB contender.
It's not that simple. I honestly believe that with QBs, like coaches (fire Bowles), an organization will know within the first year or two whether they are at least a future serviceable starter or a perennial backup or worse. Sure it may take longer for a guy to develop, but you'll at least know if he's legit. Signing a stopgap vet & going through the growing in pains only works if the guy you drafted is legit. QB is the hardest position to fill without being terrible in the right year or very lucky. For most, it will take multiple attempts. Look what Washington did...They took 2 QBs in the same draft. That's not efficient, but I'm sure they're glad they took Cousins in the 4th, after taking RG3 #2 overall. The most efficient thing is to get yourself a good QB ASAP by any means necessary.
Smart teams usually hit on late round draft picks, they see something in a player and develop him. You're selling teams short by giving luck most of the credit.
Wilson, Mariota, Prescott -- each of these guys also had strong RBs behind them. I really think that Powell, with a healthy Forte spelling him, can play that supporting back. With a rebuilt OLine and smart coaching (which the Jets may or may not have), there's no reason why amazing things can't happen here. (Other than we Jets fans not being able to have nice things.)
