None of this matters if we don't have the coaching staff in place to develop this young man. The guys we have now would have turned Peyton Manning into Joey Harrington. David Lee, MM, Rex? All of them should be kept far far away from young Qb's. Their recent track records are proof of that.
Well yeah Kaep was a 2nd rounder for a reason. Only reason I bring him up though is because thats the guy right now that a lot of scouts compare Mariota to cause of their size , arm strength and running ability. And I've brought this up many times but how would Kaepernick have looked the last couple seasons on a team not as good as San Fran? Because in all likelyhood thats the situation Mariota is going to find himself in unless he drops to the 20's or a team trades up for him. Lets say Kaepernick was the Jets QB right now. Would it really be that much of a difference maker? I honestly dont think so.
You make it sound like Rex mapped out a plan that failed for Sanchez and Geno. If anything maybe he should've been more involved in the process because thats what a head coach is suppose to do. But those guys failed mostly due to themselves and partly because of bad OC's/supporting cast. How many times do you think Rex is in the meeting rooms with the offense? We got a sneak peak of that with Hard Knocks. Rex was never in the QB meeting room with Sanchez and Schotty. Id guess that 85 percent of Rex's day is geared toward the defense. If the Jets brass was better at finding a good offensive mind the way Rex is a good defensive mind then maybe our QB's would turn to shit so quickly. But I still have to blame the player over everyone else. Geno was given improved weapons and a 2nd year in the same offense. So how is that anyone's fault but himself that he blew it? Even still its up to the GM to find a great offensive mind to mold a QB.
I think the "me" attitude is overblown. He's always been a team guy. He comes from a religious military family. Not exactly a "me me me" type environment. I think he needs to do a better job choosing his words.
Have you seen him play lately? RG3 is not a smart QB. He doesn't read the field well. All 22 tape reveals him constantly missing wide open receivers. He panics gets happy feet. For someone who is athletic he doesn't know how to avoid contact. MM has much better upside at this point.
And therein lies the problem. Rex didn't have to map out a plan. All Rex had to do was call the shots on development and any young Qb would be doomed to failure. If Rex had been a HC before coming to the Jets, there would most likely have been more balance in Rex's view and chances are he would have had some idea as to how a young Qb needs to be developed. Because he wasn't a prior HC, not only does Rex not know how to develop a young Qb, he also didn't know how to use one either. Geno should have carried a clipboard his first several years behind either Sanchez or some other Vet. Rex being Rex, that didn't happen. Rex simply needs to have all pieces already in place for success. That includes a established Vet Qb too. Anytime you have to beat the bushes for a great offensive mind because your HC only knows defense, you really need a new HC and let Rex do what Rex does best. Be a DC.
No doubt Rex would've benefited from the Jets already having a QB in place when he got here. If he got here in 08 we might've went to the Superbowl. If the Jets brought back Favre in 09 we might've went to the Superbowl. Who really knows. But fans want a guy to develop a position he has zero experience in developing. Me and you would have as much chance to develop a QB as Rex would. Maybe that should've made him less qualified for a head coaching job before we hired him but Im still on the side that if we had a decent enough QB with a good OC Rex's job would not be in question right now.
Agreed. If Rex had Mangini's '08 squad or if Farve comes back in '09, I think we would have made a really deep run into the post season. Rex actually took Mangini's squad to 2 AFCCG's so it looks like we're both right on this. At the end of the day though, in this market you need a guy with well rounded credentials instead of a guy that has to learn on the job. Especially at the GM position. Given the trending of today's NFL, although a top notch defense will take you a long way, you still have to put points on the board in order to win. There won't be anymore 2000 Raven squads in the near future. Rex has got to realize that. Those days are over.
You're swiftly becoming one of the least knowledgable and/or biggest trolls on the board. RG3 couldn't read the coloring books Mariota was finishing in kindergarten. _
I'm not a big fan of blaming the coaches for a players deficiencies and you know who number one on that list of bad Qbs is. There's plenty to pin on coaches. But a good player should soar over bad coaching.
He needs to do a better job taking basic 3 step and 5 step drops under center. He talks, but doesn't walk - I don't want this guy at all. Easily would take Bradford over.
I dunno bout that. Even Einstein had to have good physics and math teachers. You can have all the talent in the world but without direction, that talent is wasted.
Einstein wasn't exactly a great student. But anyways here we go again on the excuse train. You make the best out of a situation. And take advantage of any opportunity. Look, Lee and Marty worked their asses off with Geno. It's not their fault that he throws 3 picks in ten minutes!
You can't make sugar out of shit I agree. But you CAN make shit out of sugar. Geno probably isn't the best example as his faults coming in were overlooked by our GM in training. I'm not convinced that this CS got the best out of Geno due to systemic issues. MM's system is better suited for Vets. Lee? I'm still not sure what his claim to fame is but knowing Rex, I'm sure he walks on water.
Why would we want RG3???The guys a disease and an obvious coach killer. We don't need RGKnee or RGME we need A real coach and Marcus Marriota or some other young qb .John Hardbaugh is the answer to fixing the Jets
RGIII would lead to even more turmoil surrounding this franchise. We can't afford to gamble on someone like this, even at a cheap price. It is more than that at this point, money and compensation isn't the issue. The issue is that we have allowed this team to sink into an abyss of embarrassment, problems need to be solved, concrete solutions need to be made at very important positions on this team and bringing in someone like RGIII would be another potential problem we just can't afford in the off-season.
Which can be taught. Bradford is so underwhelming. Idky anyone could possibly want him over RG3. And if you wanna talk about injuries.....We ask this question just a season ago and no one would hesitate. RG3 is still extremely talented. He's worth a one season tryout at a low price.
After reading this post I am even more sure I want Mariota. How do you figure RGIII is a legit superstar? He had a very good rookie season and downhill since.
