There's a difference between 40 speed and game speed. Maualuga is remarkably quick off the snap, I will give him that, and has great closing speed. In open field, one-on-one chances, Maualuga is incredible. It's playing in a scheme where he struggles. Cushing is a strong linebacker, who does a great job of shedding blocks and getting to the next level. The problem is, he doesn't have great instincts, and won't live up to his workout numbers. I don't think he's fluid enough to cover a tight end or running back, and isn't fast enough laterally to cover much ground.
Cushing is athletic enough to get the job done. He can run with most TEs and WRs on crossing routes. I'm not saying we want him to turn and run with TO, just cover the center of the field.
