Rex on Sunday's performance: "We were competitive, but the score certainly didn't indicate that." A team that passed for less than 100 yards, gained 151 total yards, and scored zero points was "competitive." This is the problem with having a head coach with an exclusive hard on for one side of the ball.
I think the talent is better than the coaching. He's been given plenty of top shelf talent on defense with both GMs. And Idzik did go out and tried to upgrade the offense. But you really gave to question Idzik on his 2014 draft which right now looks like a bust.
I guess being competitive to Rex is not giving up first downs on first and second down and forcing the Chargers to have to convert on third down.
I will give Idzik the benefit of the doubt thus year if he has a strategy he is going to pull off next year with the cap space. If he doesn't get what he was planning on then he has to be gone. Rex has done a shitty job, it doesn't just look shitty because of the holes.
There are plenty of valid criticisms of Idzik to be made, but I tend to agree with pclfan that a lot of the Rex nut-hugging is over the top. His ardent defenders tend to give him all of the credit for his first two seasons here and none of the blame for the last 3+. Rex has some definite strengths but also has some enormous, glaring weaknesses as a head coach. To pretend otherwise is just comical.
To all you Rex lovers IMHO the problem is 99.9% of you are to young to remember Rexes dad who was exactly like him full of bravado & bluster but had no substance to him whatsoever which is why he was dumped as the Iggles HC. Now the reincarnated Buddy in the form of Rex shows up in NY & just like his dear old dad full of bravado & bluster & just like his dad very short on substance which means he to will eventually when Woody finally gets smart be dumped as the NYJ HC.
Listening to Rex on the Michael Kay Show - he is in denial. Saying that they will bounce back just like the Pats did against the Bengals??? I hate the Pats but in no way have the Jets emulated the Patriots...People were saying that the Pats were done (after being extremely successful for the past decade) and Rex thinks the Jets will bounce back like they have? The Jets have done nothing to make you think they will bounce back, especially against the Broncos. Rex came close (but admittedly stopped himself) from guarenteeing a win vs the Broncos - i truly thought he was about to.
I like when Rex gets pissed. many of you guys will like this comment from his PC today: Kimberley A. Martin@KMart_LI · 19m19 minutes ago Told Herm Edwards disagreed w playing Geno, Rex said: "If Herm Edwards gets to coach another team again, then he can do what he wants" (!!!)
He's going for broke. He knows he's on his last leg here and is trying to set the fuse for the bomb that would go off if a miracle happened Sunday. He has nothing to lose by being in denial and everything to lose from the standpoint of getting another head coaching job in the NFL if he shows any kind of weakness.
That's fine but he had nothing to back it up other than "I believe we will right the ship". Not very reassuring.
I am surprised Rex hasn't cried yet. Isn't this the time he usually starts crying?? Every non playoff year he has he goes from talking big in the preseason, to denial when they start losing, to anger when he can't fix it, to crying when it's too late to fix it and finally to lobbying for his return at the end of the year. I thought we'd see crying earlier but I guess that comes next week. I expect the lobbying to occur much earlier too.
Im not so certain. I don't have faith in Woody Johnson and in this situation he's the one who will ultimately make the call on where this team goes from here.
