I think Jimmy Smith ended up in the right spot. Ray Lewis will make sure he knows how to stay out of prison. He's a 3 time offender, but yeah, just like Lindsay Lohan, he's learned his lesson. Now pay the man. -X-
Can't draft every player you want. I was and still a big Reed fan. Reed just passes the eyetest, he's a helluva of player, relentless. MoWilk was a huge need and a great value at #30, the Jets did fine. I'm very happy with our draft....Ellis shows promise and Kerley and Powell will fill good roles.
Don't see how anyone that watched could be unhappy after last night. Mo looked the part, still a bit raw but is going to be making big plays soon rather than later. once he gets a bit better with his hands look out. Ellis has will provide good rotational depth for a couple years and take of for Sione after that. Kerley and Powell look like that could be used in some packages right now, let alone what a year of development will do for them. This is exactly the type of drafts good teams need to keep rolling along. Provide youth and depth with potential to take over for starters a year or two down the line. Its what the steelers have been doing for years, drafting before there is huge need but gettign a year with the kids first. Things look great so far.
Powell looks more elusive than Greene. Greene will run over a defender; Powell has some good lateral movement and has strenght. It's nice to have a solid back-up to be available if Greene goes down, we know his running style is conducive to injury. Some tough decisions will be have to be made. Do we keep Bilal on the 53, where he probably won't suit up for most games, or put him on the PS. Kerley looks good returning, only problem I saw, I'm sure Westie noticed, as soon as he caught the ball a few times he hestitated a split -second. Once you catch the ball you have to go right away, or take a knee. Kerley as a receiver looks OK, I think he could gain 5/10 pounds and still be as effective.
If we attempt to PS Powewll, I belive other teams can sign him as well ( exposed to waivers or somethign, someone fill me in on this). If thats the case there is no way he does nto make the 53 IMO.McKnight looked elusive but suspect in pass pro, so having the competition around in Powell is a win/win for the club. Kerley looks good returning and could be a 4th receiver for us. Given that Mason and Plax are a combined 71 years young, I could see us keeping young legs are in case of injury. Kerley should be one of those guys at this point. Turner and Payne will fight out for the other spot, Payne may get the edge due to his special teams work.
When a player is on the PS any team can try to claim them, but they have to put them on their 53 roster, not their PS. The team that put that player on the PS, I believe has 48 hours, to put them on their 53 man roster, so there is no chance of losing Powell as long as Tanny moves him on to the squad after a team makes a claim. I expect Holmes, Plax, Mason, Kerley & Turner to make the 53. As you indicated, what hurts Turner he's probably not the best ST player, but he's clearly the most polished receiver for that 4/5th spot. I believe Turner isn't eligible for the PS. So if we cut Turner he's gone. Also, FWIW, I expect the Jets to keep 3 TEs..Keller, Cumberland & Mulligan. Mulligan is good insurance especially with our O-line's depth being shaky.
He probably will make the 53, but he's not going to dress with Greene, Mcknight and LT. He could go on the PS, but that depends on how many players Rex wants in other positions. We won't lose him on the PS if someone tries to claim him.
You don't try to PS a 4th rd pick... especially if he's showing promise like Powell. I'm not sure about this (how could I?) but I get the feeling come wk1 Powell is the #3 RB and McKnight is #4...
Says who???? There's no rule you can't put a 4th rounder on the PS. How do you expect to keep 4 RBs on the 45 man roster...it ain't happening. Powell will be one of 46-53 not dressing, or go on the PS. If a team makes a claim we just move him to the 53...no big deal.
There's no rule but I think the only way a 4th rd pick falls through waivers is if he really sucked. That doesn't appear to be Powell's case atm. If we didn't cut McKnight last year after a horrid preseason you can bet on the fact we sure as hell aren't cutting Powell this time around just to make space for other positions. I know we'll hardly have 4 RBs dressed but we put a lot of emphasis on the run so I can totally see us have 4 RBs (5 if you count FB) on the 53 man roster (just like we did last year btw). Time will tell... I just think it makes more sense to have 2 early down backs and 1 3rd down back active. Also you know I'm not a big McKnight fan at all (thik he'll only be a good 3rd down back at most in the NFL).
^ Powell ain't being waived!! Any player put on the PS still has the opportunity to be put on that team's 53. No chance of losing him...Zero.
Maybe I don't remember the rules correctly. Let's say the Jets want to put Powell on the PS... to do that first you have to cut him, then pass through waivers and then re-sign to the PS... am I wrong? Can you put someone directly on the PS during final cuts in September?
He goes through waivers, and they make an offer. The Jets can match that offer to keep him, or pay him more. If someone makes him an offer, just move him to the 53. There's a good chance Powell will make the 53 and not dress for most of the season. I can see him dressing later in the year as a fresh back.
Thats how I see it playing out as well. Rex loves the kid so I have a very hard time seeing him not make the 53. Sure he won;t dress for the begining of the year, but he'll be there. WW - We carried 5 backs last year: Greene, LT, McKnight, Conner, and Richardson. I could see us keeping only 1 FB on the 53 man roster and 4 RB's this season.
I wasn't counting FBs. I agree, we could have 4 RBs and 1 FB, just don't expect Powell to dress at all, unless there is an injury or as LT wears down later in the season.. I still see 3 RBs and the terminator on the 45 man roster.
