I voted Spagnuolo too. I think its unreal how that defense is still awesome and they lost Strahan and Osi. Imagine if the Jets lost two players of that calabir (well I guess our pass D can't get that much worse than it already is). But I wouldn't be disappointed in Ryan either. Though I would be if its Shotty, that would suck.
Good Dcs or OCs don't always turn into good HCs so we need to be careful. I'd LOVE Marty Schottenheimer as HC. After Cowher he's my next choice.
Oh I wouldn't mind Marty either but I was referring to Brian. I think Brian is a horrible choice. Maybe he wasn't the one coming up with the offensive gameplan and it was Mangini or something. But I got sick of hearing the commentators saying every game "why are the Jets running so much, I thought they'd come out throwing against this weak pass D" or "why are the Jets passing so much, I thought they'd come out running". Or lining up in shotgun ever f'n 3rd and 2 or 3rd and 3.
Maybe he just doesn't interview well. Some guys don't because they haven't taken the time to even know the personnel. They show up for the interview and are clueless as to who'd even on the team. I would think you score a lot of points if you go in knowing all the positions and what you'd do to get the most out of those people... some ideas at least.
Yeah, but some do. And they don't come in with all the burnout or the baggage, either. Francessa was discussing this exact thing the other day and he was going over veteran coaches that wound up on other teams (and how they fared). Interestingly, he pointed out that history is against such a move. Not one HC who has won a SB has ever gone on to coach another team and win a SB with that team. Not one.
Buddy turned the Eagles around. That franchise sucked before he got there and it was ready to take off until of course the sickness that is Rich Kotite contaminated it and sent it reeling yet again before Ray Rhodes.
The knock on Marty is of course the "Marty Ball" thing.... conservative playcalling to the point of blowing key games... playing not to lose at key choke points in playoff games, etc. I, for one, had enough of that kind of ball from Herm and then, surprisingly, Mangini. No thanks on Marty, I'll pass. If we can't get a Cowher or Shanahan, give me Spagnuolo. I'd rather go down swinging than settling for FGs on 4th and 1 from the opponents' 2 YL, especially when you've been running the ball well and have TJ or Richardson as options, like Mangini settled for against Seattle, for example. That's Marty Ball right there.
That's great and how many playoff games have they won? The NFC North doesn't exactly have dynamic offenses and Baltimore has amazing talent on defense. I would like Marty to take over w/ the plan for Brian to take over after Marty retires. I like Brian Schottenheimer, he didn't have the best year but when your QB is turning it over at the rate ours was it's hard to look good. History also told us no team could win 3 road games to get to the SB then win a SB. History changes. The Pats won 3 SBs w/ a retread, TB won w/ a retread, Indy won w/ a retread, NYG won w/ a retread. All but 2 HCs this decade were retreads that won SBs and Cowhere had been around almost 15 years before he won one. Only Billick won one in his first few years.
Our defence is now firmly 3-4. Jenkins can easily move back to 4-3 so I don't see why you pointed him out. Thomas, Coleman, Gholston are useless in a 4-3 and to a lesser extent Pace and Harris are too (slow in coverage)
Buddy is still alive and probably only the real old timers here know that he was the Jets DC when they won the super bowl. Fewer probably know that when Namath guaranteed the Jets would win he wasn't even thinking about the offense but he knew that the game plan Ryan had devised for that game was insurmountable and Baltimore didn't have a chance.
