these drama queens who feel the need to interpret everything they read as negatively as possible are such a drag. Rex wouldn't have picked Hill and was overruled and is glad that he was overruled. BFD. the insane clown posse that thinks this is something to fret & spin as negatively as they possibly can are whacked.
Not to bash Hill, but those aren't Jerry Rice numbers. There's no indication when he said this, before the pick or after preseason. It's easy to take this whole conversation out of context it there's no time frame reference.
Yes there is. This offense needs Hill to be able to produce this year. This is a challenge to Hill and will either light a fire under his ass and get him to work even harder, or if he sulks over it land his ass on the bench. Have you never responded to a negative review by working harder to prove someone wrong?
Fair enough. Not sure how I cry over everything written, but okay. I get pissed when people in the Jets FO/team say things that could be construed as detrimental. This is one of those times. You will disagree, and that's fine. I think Rex in no way, shape or form, meant to intentionally rip Hill, but his mouth goes before his brain. It didn't need to be said. There were a ton of other ways to get his point across as myself and other posters in this thread have stated. Rex said he saw nothing in the guy. That's extreme. He later, as people have tried to point out as positives, says he is tall, fast and has good hands. My question is why did he not see that on film? He said he saw nothing. He then says Tanny and the boys were adamant about drafting him. That's two extremes. Hopefully Hill will be a bigtime receiver. I think he has the physical tools. If he flops, these comments will be thrown in Tanny's face down the road. That could potentially be very bad.
People are overreacting but you are taking it to the complete opposite end of the spectrum and acting like this is completely meaningless. If you don't think that the people in the front office, like Tannenbaum and Bradway, and Stephen Hill even are subject to the human element involved in all of this then you are kidding yourself. How much effect this has and what Rex says behind closed doors we will never know, but to act like this is completely trivial is just as absurd as the thoughts you are attacking. I think there are probably some people involved in the Jets FO that are shaking their heads reading this story. I could be wrong, but I don't think that is a stretch.
this is complete bullshit. this is a completely harmless statement and Rex Ryan shouldn't be concerned with how emotionally unstable people may react to it because they are afraid it won't have a positive impact on the team. time to grow up.
his point was that he was wrong about the pick. the only person his comments criticize is himself. I am sure Tannenbaum, Bradway and Hill are smart enough to identify that.
The way to say what Rex said without causing too much potential controversy is: "I didn't see much on film that suggested to me that he was going to be a good player. I was wrong, I think he's going to be a great player." He didn't have to talk about the guys who were adamant about taking Hill. All that did was to put their skin in the game also. It would have been implied, since if Rex didn't like Hill then somebody must have made the decision to trade up, but implied is different than pinning specific people for the act. Of course the problem is that any time Rex talks about a player he's going to be great, so any criticism of Hill before the obligatory Rex-shine is going to stand out. Really he should have just passed on the question with a simpler answer that didn't involve other people or what Rex thought about the guy after watching college film. Nothing good was likely to come out of feeding the beast the way Rex did. That both Rex and Sanchez kind of called Hill out on the drops at various times is not particularly good either. Rookie WR's drop balls. If they thought Hill was being sloppy and dropping balls they should have addressed that with him in a much less public way. If they thought Hill was naturally dropping balls despite his best efforts, well that's not a good story at all and certainly not something you call him out for.
I think that it is a stretch to suggest that this was the point of what Rex said. The fact that he brought up the front office and all of that doesn't seem like he was just trying to light a fire under the player. His quotes touched on way more than what would be necessary to do that.
Headline & article don't match and the negativity in this thread is getting really absurd. AFTER READING THE ARTICLE he gives the definitely gives the impression that RIGHT NOW HE AGREES WITH THE PICK. He was not impressed with the college production/stats like so many other people who were unhappy with the pick. However, Rex listened to the football people around and afterwards has changed his mind. It's funny how OP scanned through the article and selectively copy/pasted the subsection that helps with the sensationalism..
I think Rex's biggest problem here is that he lacks that split second filter that most people have that lets him know before he says somethign the may be misconstruied in a bad way. He probly should have said " Idid not see Hill contributing much this year" Not "Well, nothing told me he would (contribute)". Rex, for as much as he talks, is not well spoken and leaves alot to be desired in his statements. He'd never make it in politics and thats just fine by me. Things that can be construed as detrimental can be seen as a knock on a guy, or a motivational tool. As I said before we need hill to be better than he was this preseason. He's shown flashes now needs consistancy. If I was Hill, I would take those wrods as fule to work harder, not be pissed at my coach.
How is it complete bullshit? Because you say so? Considering Rex works in a business that is heavily reliant on perception I think he should be more concerned with watching the things he says to the media. And in making the point that he was wrong about the pick (a point that has not yet been validated I might add) he completely absolved himself from blame for the pick in the eyes of the media that likes to jump on these types of quotes. If Hill turns out to be a bust you are kidding yourself if you don't think the media is going to bring up these quotes later on. And like it or not in a big market like NY with Woody Johnson at the helm, perception does matter. This
Its Rex doing what he does, being honest to a fault. He points out that everyone be he wanted the Kid. It shows both support from the organization and doubt from his coach. I know how I would take it if I was reading this about me.
A small handful of people massively overreacting and irrationally and unreasonably interpreting Rex's comment as negatively as possible. Its a ridiculous reaction. If you expect Rex to not tell the truth b/c some people could react like a bunch of little wussies. Guess again. You are presuming and assuming - and in any event - Who F'ng cares if some "people involved in the FO" are shaking their heads???? I could care less. ANybody who can't handle the truth and would prefer the Coach to lie and BS to make people have warm & fuzzy feelings are clearly in the wrong organization and they should find a new job elsewhere so that more talented people who aren't complete wussies can step up and take over.
SufferingJetsFan sure likes to whine and complain about every damn quote or soundbite. I don't think he said anything out of line, stop making it a big deal.
"Well, nothing told me he would (contribute)," Ryan told Don Banks of Sports Illustrated. "Nothing. When I saw the tape (of his collegiate play) I was concerned. But (Jets general manager) Mike Tannenbaum and (senior personnel executive) Terry Brady and all our scouts were adamant about this guy. They were adamant that this guy can do it. REALLY. Rex called Terry Bradway Terry BRADY. I don't believe it.
It's just Rex being being Rex which is being honest and speaking his mind. He is not saying Hill was a bad draft pick or that he will do not well just that he had a different opinion on drafting him. I prefer the Rex approach to the Mangini appraoch. When the Browns drafted a player, McCoy, that Mangini did not want he refused to let his coaches talk to McCoy during the season and made sure McCoy always got the weekly gameplan a day later than the other QBs. I much prefer the honest coach that speaks his mind but does not hold grudges.
