Tannenbaum doesn't have to have real power to make calling him out a bad idea. What happens the next time Rex gets in trouble somehow and Woody asks Tannenbaum what he thinks? Hire/fire is over-rated in terms of how things devolve. The background dynamics frequently are more important than whatever the incident was that ultimately brings somebody down or elevates them.
that's exactly what "But now that we have him, of course, I want to claim him: 'Oh, that was my pick.' But it really wasn't.' " means. holy shit.
Geez, Rex has done a complete 180 from being too complementary to his players to being too much of a loose cannon.
I read this on the bottom of the NFL network ticker and I just shook my head. Why even admit something like that.
The article doesn't actually say he would have went with a defensive guy, we're just assuming he would have. One of his 'picks' was a fullback, so it's not entirely true he'd go all defense if he could either, although yeah I think there was a bit of a position bias there. Which is still lunacy because our biggest need NOW is a WR. If Hill had lit it up in the preseason this article would look more complimentary than it does now. But he didn't, really. This is only 'complementary' like his half-assed complement of Gholston when he came in, how he thought was a bum but now that he has him he's going to be the greatest player in the world. It's basically a mealy-mouthed way of getting on the guy.
I haven't read this entire thread but I think it's safe to say that Rex will deny it if it's not true and he will say nothing at all about it if it is true.
truth and honesty are excellent and refreshing amidst the usual BS we hear from the media and FO. Its especially hilarious when it makes certain fans get their panties all in a knot. he wouldn't have draftd Hill... BFD. and yet some think we should all set our hair on fire and run around the backyard b/c a HC honestly answered a question. LOL.
You really pulled a dick Cimini by only talking about the negative quote and ingoring all the positive ones. Nice try at trying to get people riled up though, some of us can read the entire aricle and see that its no big deal.
So after reading the whole article, explain why Rex said he saw nothing in him while watching film, then later listed all his qualities which would have been clearly evident on film.
If Stephen Hill turns into a stud and the Jets didn't draft him because Rex saw nothing the spin would be Rex is way too stubborn, and he should listen to his scouts I personally find it a good sign that he listens to other people on the team. One thing you can't say about Rex is that he doesn't at least try to incorporate other people's points of view. The flip side of the Stephen Hill story is Vernon Gholston the scouts on the team didn't want him, but Mangini pushed for the pick. I think this is a huge non-story. He isn't the first or the last coach to have doubts about drafting a player
So, you think rex seeing a wideout with limited catches and not wanting to pick him as a comment that is negative? Really? Then he goes on to say a wideout was not his dream pick. He wanted another position in the second round, but eveyone else wanted this kid. God forbid he speak the facts about the situation. He's not basing, he is being honest. If you see this as negative your simply looking for bad press. Typical, whiny, SOJF bullshit is what your OP amounts to.
Thanks for avoiding my question involving what he saw on film. When you say you saw NOTHING from your top pick, how can you not see it as negative? Typical Sunshiner rebuttal.
I don't think Rex really based his opinion on the film as much as he did on the production. Hill probably didn't look amazing on tape with his route running, which can be a turn off. The thing is, you can't teach 6'4, 215, and 4.29 and a good set of hands. Hill has good hands, he just needs to use them instead of his body and stop running before the ball is in his hands.
Yes, I'm a sunshiner ... lol. Just because I do not cry over every thing written like you does not make me overly optimistic about this team. They look deeply flawed on offense this year and could go anywhere from 4-12 to 12-4 depending on if Tony gets his O together. I fully expect little more than an 8-8 club right now despite having one of the best defenses in the league. Now back to the point, Did you watch much of GT last year? Hills film is mostly him blocking and running Drag routes and go Routes. There is not alot to see except him out running over matched corners or making alot of yards after the catch. Several times he would have to stop and wait for the ball to get to him when he was badly underthrown. This is not a Michael FLoyd or Justin Blackmon type of career where you see them do everything on the feild multiple times. What you got to see out of Hill was very limited. I was against hill as a first round pick were many thought he could land because of this. I think taking him in the second is a real gamble on a boom or bust prospect but am pulling for him now that he is a Jet. There were many safer picks on the board at several positions in the second at that point including some more polised wideouts who do not have the extreme upside of hill. I do not blaming Ryan for not seeing much, becasue there is really not too much to see.
Joey Clinkscales left after the draft. He'd been looking at the Raiders for about a month before that, which would have been from about the time the Jets began to finalize their draft board. I'd be really interested to know which side of the Hill argument he was on.
Every time one of these "Rex specials" comes out I just can't help but wonder why he doesn't just keep his mouth shut. Everyone trying to defend him may be right in that technically he didn't say anything "bad" or "negative, but there is absolutely nothing positive that can come out of him saying this. On the other hand if Hill is a stud, it calls Rex's judgment into question. If he is a bust it looks like he was preemptively absolving himself from blame.
