Stability is good when you're starting from a good position. 7 years under Tannenbaum and 4 under Ryan represents a pretty good body of work for judgement. Compared to historical Jets teams, this Management team may look like geniuses. Compared to other NFL franchises that aren't bottom feeders not so much. Sadly, the Jets are in the middle. Kinda like purgatory.

You can't ignore the trending Kurt. If you're not improving, you're falling behind and the Jets are falling behind. Perhaps not so much in a weak AFCE, but overall in the league? absolutely. We haven't exactly been lighting it up over these last two seasons. 8-8 and now 6-9/10. I don't know exactly what the numbers are on our record since the last AFCCG loss but I do know it's not over .500. The trending is downwards. There's no denying that.

Factor in the confusion, discord and unprofessionalism of the management in place and you get the picture of a franchise in deep trouble. This isn't some slump that can be overcome if we only give them 5 more years. This is systematic Kurt. This is a fundamental issue with the decision making processes that are in play at Jets HQ. This franchise is dysfunctional. To coin a Rex Ryan time worn phrase: "no doubt".

Now not saying Einstein was wrong, but it was he who said that doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result is the definition of insanity. Woody may be a lot of things, but he's not insane. Factor in the demolition of "The New York Jets" brand and the owner of the NYJ's really is in a box here. Luckily, the Giants most likely won't make the playoffs either. Small solace there.

We can keep the status quo and remain bad with an occasional trip to mediocrity or we can go in a different direction. We will get it right sooner or later and when that happens for more than 2 years running, lets build on that instead. Building on a shakey foundation only leads to a shakey home.

Woody's problem is that he's never hired a true, proven NFL Architect to run this team and grow his franchise/brand. He's always tried to catch lightning in a bottle ever since Parcells left. Now is his chance to turn over the decision making to a proven decision maker and let him determine the direction of the franchise.

A lot of the Jet's fortune in the coming years will depend on what Woody Johnson does in 2013. He stands pat, then don't expect anything different than what you've already seen. Expecting anything better than that would be insanity but a really nice surprise nonetheless.

  2. It's not that I don't think some changes are needed. It's not that I'm not as miserable as the rest of the fan base about the last 2 years. It's been horrible.

But where I get upset is that people don't take into account what massive change means & what it has meant in the past to this franchise. You want Tannenbaum fired? So be it. the Tebow decision alone is enough to justify it. But why not tread alittle more lightly? Why not pay alittle more attention to who actually is available before just recklessly firing everyone? There will be growing pains when a move is indeed made. Is this fan base ready for that? I'm laughing to myself as I pose that very question.Change is not always good.

Not to mention...as bad as it has been...the team has had far worse seasons both production wise & in the standings. The defense is still top 10..the biggest issue is self inflicted wounds. Self inflicted wounds are the easiest to correct. But reading this board & hearing the media..you'd think Rich Kotite was back in charge

To the Rich Kottie comment, you can see the shift Jets fans have in expectations. Now a 8-8 season or a 6-10 season is call for drastic change while before that would be "keep the boat steady" or minor change. Not to mention the fact we lost 2/3 top skill position players (Revis, Cro, Holmes) and our starting TE has been out oh and our #2 WR has been out quite a bit too.

While yes I agree with you stability is good, I am of the thought that Tanny should be shown the door. Yes it could get worse. Yes there might not be a replacement, but that's the risk you have to be willing to take for change. It's hard to really say Tanny has done a good job recently. Go back to the offseason after our second AFC championship loss. Can you think of a FA move that helped this team until Bell and Landry? There seems to be a lot more misses AND cap problems on top of that.

I am more iffy on Sparano only wanting him gone if Norv or someone like that is available, but keeping him if nobody is out there.

Yea lets compare Rich Kottie to Rex Ryan, Jets fans are becoming dilusional. Rich Kottie had zero success with this team. Rex Ryan made Jets history, Everyone loved Rex those first two years now in typical Jet fashion everyone is turning on him , why am I not surprised

The fire fire fire crap would stop with a Super Bowl appearance.

Most coaches that are going to win a Super Bowl do in the first few years with the team they win it with. Most GM's do it on their first coach.

There are exceptions of course but the exceptions are in very strong organizations that build up talent over time and have a very strong generational plan.

The recent exceptions are Cowher with the Steelers, McCarthy and Holmgren with the Packers (5th year each) and Dungy with the Colts. Every other coach that has won a Super Bowl since 1980 has done it inside 4 years.

Given that the Jets are not a strong organization, a characterization that I think most people would agree with, the odds on Rex Ryan winning a Super Bowl with the Jets are very low right now. He's going to have to do something that no coach outside the Steelers, Packers and Colts organization has pulled off: which is to win a Super Bowl for the first time after his 4th season.

Really well said Cman, I completely agree with all of this. There needs to be change... This franchise is on a downward slope and there's no sight of that changing, unless there is something changed within the organization.

We can no longer continue this string of mediocrity sprinkled in with a WC appearance here and there due to big name FA signings. This organization needs to change fundamentally and it starts up top.

Exactly right--There is not another coach in this league who would keep talking up Sanchez for 2 years ("Mark gives us the best chance to win") after his week after week debacles, much less keep playing him. Playing Sanchez when your season is on the line against the Titans after the butt fumble and Cardinal game shows how stupid Rex is. Hall of famer L. Tomlinson stated he was "shocked" Rex stayed with Sanchez so long--Any other coach would quit defending the indefensible. If you bring Rex back next year, you better get used to more Sanchez interceptions next year because Rex will spend the offseason talking up Sanchez and then playing him all next year to try to justify his faith in him. Hit the road, Rex--and take Mark (butt fumble) Sanchez with you.

That is a good point. Of course comparing Ryan to the other coaches in Jet history make him look good - we've been so bad for so long. When you compare him to successful coaches around the league, he pales quickly.

That's still above average and is a WINNING record. You're upset because he's not posting a .750 winning rate? I'm sorry but you don't take one of the few things working with the team and just fire them. Out of all the head coaches in the league, currently coaching, Rex Ryan ranks #12 in total winning percentage. Another thing that's above average about him.

Plus you are wrong about the team getting worse. From 2008 to 2009, the team improved. From 2009 to 2010 the team improved. It got worse last year and this year we were decimated with injuries. Again, you have to look at the entire body of work, not just the last year.

Jets fans are so impatient. The answer is not to fire everyone after every bad year.

^The Jets problems are not due to their firings. The problems are due to their HIRINGS. Continually hiring untried and unproven head coachs, coordinators, and position coaches. Firing a coach, then promoting someone from the same failed staff to head coach. Hiring a head coach because he is from the Jet "family", not because he has proven himself in anyway. The 2 exceptions? Weeb Eubank, and Bill Parcells, who were the coaches during arguably the best seasons the Jets have had.

The reason the Jets fire coaches frequently is that the coaches they hire SUCK. put that together with their atrocious history of player scouting and selection, and you have the failed organization that is the Jets.

The Ryan hiring is right in line with that pattern - an untried and unproven head coach from the Jet "family" (his father). So the debacle happening now is one I've seen repeated time and again, and will continue until we get some tried and true football people in this organization who implement a true plan for success.

Rex has done well but if he was a good coach I don't think the locker room would turn out to be the way it is. We need a tough no non-sense coach to bring the locker room back. I would be willing to pay Rex HC money to be a DC but as a HC he needs to do more.

What the hell is bringing the locker room back?

Rex needs players on offense, starting with a QB...

It's like the Cardinals...If you got 3 shitty QBs, you are going to suck.

I don't think there's a problem with the locker room, except maybe the talent of some of the people who are actually in it...

All reports indicate players STILL love playing for Rex and support him... obviously you can't know that for sure unless you're actually in there but assuming that is true, the problems aren't team unity. The problems are management.

This is a great post, and says it better than those of us who have tried to have the reverse-continuity argument. The Jets, unfortunately, are a sad sack front office and pretty much always have been except for the Parcells era, and that was marred by injuries and the douchebag leaving before the job was done.

the % of the fanbase who idiotically think that firing the HC every 4 yrs after 1 losing season is a good idea are the biggest jokes of all. These poor dumb fans are rooting for perpetual failure and mediocrity.
