Good move on Ryan's part. Ground and pound is simpler and it allows everybody to focus on doing a few things well instead of many things poorly. The counterpunches off of ground and pound will be against 3 or 4 defenders back instead of 5 or 6. Play action will work again. It's possible that Wayne Hunter can't run block any better than he can pass block but if that's the case then we're screwed no matter what and why have Sanchez get pummeled 5 or 6 times a game when we're screwed either way?
I don't doubt that, I just don't think ground & pound plays to Schotty's strengths as a coordinator. The Jets lead the league in rushing in 2009 but I think that was a combination of personnel (Faneca is a much better run blocker than Slauson) and handcuffing Sanchez as much as possible. Wouldn't count on Sanchez lighting it up just yet, he can barely get a 3 step drop down without getting killed.
Schotty was marginalized at the end of 2009 and Callahan's role was increased as I recall. I expect the same thing to happen now. You're right that Schotty can't manage ground and pound well. He over thinks stuff and ground and pound is more about brute force.
He's such a liability on passing downs that you can't play him because at some point no matter well you're running the ball you still need to pass every once in a while.
WTF does "Ground and Pound" mean anyway? I mean, seriously, enough with this nickname BS. It only serves to come back as ridicule anyway. Can't we just say we're focused on establishing a running game? I hate this cute naming shit. What's next "Shock and Awe"??
If we're going to play Ducasse, we should use Wayne Hunter on sure passing downs... as the 3rd down RT.
Sanchez has even said " the offense is too predictable". After the year is over, I'm in favor of bringing in Marc Trestman to be our OC. The only concern, will Trestman want to leave being a HC in the CFL. Trestman has been very successful with QBs and has a history with Bill C. I'm not in favor of Bill C controling the entire offense. Trestman would be perfect in developing Sanchez.
The run game imo has sucked because it was forcefully taken away as the identity. You'll see,it will get better if the commit to it.
This is where the potential signing of Brandon Manumaleuna fits in. Stick he beside the RT every play, no matter who it is. He's a 300 pound TE who can actually block in both aspects, unlike the TE filling that job now...
