People keep talking about Aso "lowering the bar" along with other old, decrepit corners. Players who are too old and crappy that they barely garner any interest at all are not in the same league as Revis and have nothing to do with setting Revis' market. Rotoworld and others question whether Aso is even considered a "serviceable" player at this point in his career stating that his skills have eroded so far. Aso is signing a 1 year incentive laden contract with NO GUARANTEED money, and isnt even going to be a starter there. He is not comparable to Revis.

This is now the 3rd tier of free agency. Anyone who is signing during this tier (on their 1 year deals) with barely any guaranteed money has no impact on the best CB in the game and possibly the best defensive player in the game.

So tell us again how this signing negatively impacts the Jets?

Because San Francisco had a boatload of picks and a need at CB which made them the most likely candidate as a trade partner for the Jets. Then Tampa Bay emerged. Having multiple teams interested is beneficial for the Jets because it creates a market and drives up the return. Once you become too stubborn and one of those teams bows out of the race by signing someone else, you're down to only 1 team, and they hold all the cards.

It would be one thing if the Jets hadn't embarrassed both themselves and Revis with all of the antics the past few months. Everyone knows the Jets are forced to trade Revis. They've made it clear they dont want him and he has been affected by that, and stated so publicly. It would be a disaster and an awkward situation for all parties if the Jets couldnt complete a trade and were forced to go into this year with Revis on the roster. Everyone knows that.

If I were the Jets I'd be hoping another team (some suggested Atlanta) stepped up to the plate, otherwise, you're going to have to sell low at Tampa's best offer in order to avoid a drastic embarrassment.

You make a reasonable argument except for the bolded part. The Jets moved up to draft him, and have retained him since then despite multiple hold-outs. "They've made it clear they don't want him" is a silly contention.

Revis has never shown any particular loyalty to the Jets. The Jets owe him nothing. They are not kowtowing to Revis's camp at this point, nor should they. Revis has always treated this shit as strictly business, and now Mr. Idzik is simply doing the same.

The Jets hold all the cards.

Is Revis really going to risk a 50 million dollar contract in fear of a second injury at 29, by playing for 6 million?

Tell me, whats the going rate for any 30 year old CB coming of two injuries...?

They can put a market rate offer on the table, and say...this is a one time deal...next uear you hit FA, we are not a player.

Big roll of the dice if you are Revis.

this is utter nonsense. the Jets don't have to trade Revis. but the only way for the Bucs to guarantee they get Revis this season is to trade for him. so, if the Bucs want him this year, and want to make sure he doesn't sign with any other team, they HAVE to trade for him. the Jets have all of the leverage on the Bucs if the Bucs really do want Revis. your argument completely ignores the other half of the equation -- the Buccaneers, or at the least assumes their interest in acquiring Revis is less than the Jets interest in trading him. but you have zero basis for such a position, so your argument is nothing more than fantasy, not even reasonable speculation.

the Jets losing Revis does ZERO for the Bucs if they aren't the team he signs with, so it is absolute nonsense to claim they have an advantage on the Jets just because the Jets may lose Revis and get nothing in return. the potential of Revis leaving has nothing to do with the Bucs achieving their goal to get Revis if that is their interest.

to get Revis this season they have to trade for him, it is simple as that. the 49ers weren't interested in Revis, so they are irrelevant to the scenario. just because they had the potential to be the best possible trade partner doesn't matter, so your bringing them up is meaningless.

I think the Jets and Bucs have a deal agreed upon....its just they won't strike the deal until draft day because the deal will involve the Jets trading down and the Bucs trading up and most likely the Jets will want to see who is around by pick 9 and the Bucs want to make sure one of the top 2 CBs are around by pick 9.

    TB Gets:
    CB Darrelle Revis
9th pick(CB Xavier Rhodes OR CB Dee Milliner if he somehow drops)

    NYJ Gets:
13th pick(QB Geno Smith, OLB B. Mingo, OLB Jarvis Jones, G John Cooper)
    2013 2nd round pick
    2013 3rd round pick
    2013 6th round pick
    2014 1st round pick

Idzik and TB GM are buddies so I think the thought process here is:

Idzik knows if he gets only 2 picks in return for Revis, he knows the NY Media will tear him a new one and TB GM knows its vital to get Revis and also a 2nd CB....the two picks he'd get are TB's 2nd round pick this year and TB's 1st round pick this year for Revis alone. However, by camouflaging the Revis deal into a trade down....it can hide the fact that Revis didn't go for too much from a quantity standpoint. By the Jets trading down 4 spots, they get a 3rd round pick this year from TB and a 6th round pick this year.....and can STILL get the guy(s) they may very well be targeting.

TB gets Rhodes who TEN/SD/MIA all would have interest in and if Milliner is on the board by 9, we may even get a bit more of a return because he'd be in such a demand by the Bucs IMO. We can end Geno Smith's possible fall if need be, or can take best available OLB or take Warmack/Cooper and not consider it too big of a reach.

This scenario obviously would not be leaked because you don't want Miami or SD or TEN ruining everything by trading up to take the player TB covets....you WANT Milliner to be around by pick 9, it gives the Bucs all the more incentive to do a deal like this. Rhodes can get the deal done too but Milliner gets the Bucs salivating.

That's a very elaborate trade for you to think is secretly done.

I'll just say that I hope you're right, though I can't imagine any reason that TB would do that deal.

    Wow....just wow..

You somehow managed to totally misstate whats happening in free agency under the new CBA.

Perhaps...in support of your rather curious observation, you could elucidate for the class, what the prices the non third tier corners signed for...

(pssst...this year, and next..are about too much supp,y for too little demand in the face of the new cba)

    Dide..really?

There are no serious takers for Revis right now.

As the price sinks, and Revis does not signal that he gets that, any GM giving up. 5 cents too much for a headache, will get run out of town on a rail for a deal like that.

Revis trade value, now is a first and a third, max.

You just said aso isn't going to be a starter and isn't comparable to Revis. How does an incomparable backup CB impact the potential want/need for the best CB?

You're contradicting yourself and don't make any sense.

I understand the point you are making, but what separates my pov from yours is clear.

While I would concede that it is fair to say Revis is somewhat more likely than your average player to hold out in the future, that does not mean he will. It depends. First of all I blame the Jet FO as much (at least) as him and his agent for the past problems. Second, he is not holding out now, and is quite unlikely to do so this off season. Next season, without an extension, he will be an FA, so "holding out" is not going to happen then, either. At some point down the road? That brings us to third, which is it depends on his contract.

The other problem with your position is it assumes the Jets will get comparable value for him in a trade for picks, and that the Jets (with their quite spotty record in that regard) will then make good use of those picks. Neither of those two are anywhere near a sure thing. I keep pointing out to those in favor of trading him that a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, but no one who is in favor of trading him seems to get that.

In connection with the foregoing, the timing makes a trade even more problematic. He is coming back from injury, and until people know he will be back near 100%, that depresses his trade value. By the time he can show up in camp and show how far he has come back, other teams, including the Bucs, will have wanted to have such an important question about their roster settled. So either it will be settled for them by their looking end going elsewhere with their roster, or (which is quite unlikely) they will be willing to wait. They are not going to want to wait.

Meanwhile the Jets have leverage to a certain extent by having the ability to exchange the 2013 below market contract rate for his salary as a chip in negotiating an extension.

I am convinced too many of the trade Revis crowd here believe the Jets are going to trade him, and are trying to convince themselves that is a good thing. But if the Jets trade him without even trying to reach a deal on an extension because the owner is emotionally committed to dealing him, that is stupid. And it means we have a football simpleton running hte franchise with an emotional agenda.

No wonder the trade Revis crowd wants to avoid admitting this is mostly about Woody and his being ill suited to making football decisions.

That's a plausible deal. The 13 and the 73 are worth a bit more than the 9. That makes the Revis portion of the deal the 43, the 181 and next year's #1 which could well be the market for Revis at this point. The Revis part of the package is worth about what the 18 pick this year is worth.

I think Idzik is going to hold out for the best possible deal and if that's the one above there's a real chance he pulls the trigger. I don't think he's going to be intimidated by the NY media. It's hard enough running an NFL team as it is.

Worrying about what non-football professionals think about your moves is ridiculous. It's where bad teams go to hide when they make a questionable move "well, we had to do this because the media and fans would have..."

The Revis deal or lack thereof is going to happen based on what's best for the Jets. If the media wants to throw poop from the upper branches the best thing to do is just get out of range (keep a low profile while doing the job of running the team) and watch it happen.

Nothing the Jets do around Revis is going to be well-received by the media as a whole. There are always going to be factions with an agenda (sell papers/hits/ads) that will spin every move negatively to get their audience and sell.

-On the issue of who to blame for contract negotiations, hope would be Idzik is a fresh voice, but the kid held out twice, before his rookie contract and in his rookie contract. It's not outlandish to think he will hold out if he feels his contract isn't high enough in 2-3 years. Maybe Idzik stops this and such, but history tells us Revis wants his money and will holdout for it.

-Well the issue started as we are only trading Revis because of a big contract, so why not trade so and so player with a big contract. My point is, Revis is going to get more value than any other player with a big contract on our team. The thing is, is that value enough? That's still up for debate. But if you are looking to trade big contracts, that's why Revis is on the list and not Sanchez or David Harris. That was my point, there is more than Revis might cost us a lot of money, so let's trade him. There are more factors than just that going on here.

-Again, the issue wasn't what a team would give for Revis and if that's what we want. The poster I was responding to tried to argue that since we are trading Revis for money why aren't people calling for trading Harris or Sanchez, etc. The point is because everything I listed:
    -Has held out twice already
-Has demanded big money in the past
-Has a capable backup, top 10 player behind him
-Has the most value coming back on a trade than any other big money player

Like I've always held, if some team is going to be stupid to blow us away with multiple 1st I think we have to seriously consider it and potentially take it. Since no team seems to being this, take the low contracts in FA this year and negotiate with Revis around that. Try to get him to sign a long term contract, above what other corners got but not outlandishly ridiculous.

My position can't be boiled down to "Trade Revis" or "resign or Revis" but I'm more sitting on the fence. Right now, with the low CB salaries and no big trade I'm leaning towards resigning him. Earlier, when there was rumor we might get multiple 1st from a team, I was leaning towards trade him.

The post you quoted though, I was responding to the idea "Anyway, out of that list only 1 of those players is actually worth their contract... Revis. Yet there are Jets fans that want to trade HIM?" and "But in reality, out of that group above, does it really make sense to take it as it is and decide to trade Revis? Not really, it makes no sense at all."

In the list which was a list of top players, trading Revis makes the most sense for getting value back and other areas. Is that value enough to trade him, right now from what's the latest news (only 1 first and corners getting lowballed) I say no. But if you were to pick a player to trade to get value back from the high payed players list, Revis is the only that makes sense. We would have to pay a team to take Sanchez for example

    Exactly right.

The simple fact that the Revis ballwashers refuse to accept, is the declining market.

The Jets have Revis by the balls.

They can offer him 40-50 over five (averaging no more than 8M per, which would make him the highest paid CB under the new CBA, hes earned that) right now...or force him to play this year for 6M, and risk getting hurt. Then he will be a Jet for life because his career will be over.

Hes 28, coming off a season ending injury.

Now,if he gets hurt again, he'll be approaching thirty with two consecutive injuries...

Whats the going rate for a CB, approaching thirty, with the last two seasons plagued by injury?
