fair enough. it read more like you believed the Jets were focused on getting a deal done before the deadline to avoid paying the bonus. the Jets would obviously love to do so, but wouldn't settle on a lesser deal just to save $1 million. with a player of Revis' capabilities, paying him $1 million is nothing; you have to get the best deal possible.
Right but his failure to get what he originally wanted shows the new FO won't be pushed around. He won't get $16m/per from the Jets.
Roroworld: Revis earns his bonus. Per a clause in his contract, Darrelle Revis earned a $1 million roster bonus Saturday. The only way for the Jets to have avoided the bonus was to cut or trade him before Saturday. That didn't happen, so Revis will collect the money regardless of what team he's with in 2013, and the money does count against the Jets' salary cap. Revis also has a $1 million workout bonus (late June) and a $1 million reporting bonus (late July) in his contract.
A first round pick instead of a second round pick is apparently worth more than $1 million to the Jets.
at some point it just becomes financially more palatable to resign the guy. Say you trade him and take a $12 mil cap hit, now you have to sign someone to take his spat at $2.5 mil per. Now you have to do it again next year after this guy finishes a one year deal. The CB market is drying up and no one is even approaching $8 million a year - that doesn't help other teams when trying to trade for a guy that wants $16 million. If Elvis hit the market teams would smart throwing money at a guy that can generate 10 + sacks over a guy that can knock down 10 balls.
Another Revis Thread...but MORE interesting! I have a question...has anyone given it any consideration that Revis was NEVER on the trading block?? Hear me out... Firstly who has been reporting all of this? Our stellar beat writers who couldn't predict/report if the sun was up and shining?? A couple of talking heads at ESPN?? The only quote from Revis' agents, that I've seen, is they haven't been contacted for a re-negotiation at this point. All I've seen is Revis stating it was a "shock" to him to hear they were shopping a trade. All I've seen is Idzik and Ryan say they weren't trying to trade him. So far those are the only quotes. I've seen a crap load of talking heads say they know what Woody wants. Apparently they are invited to meetings with Woody and we're not. I've seen nothing else, reputable, to substantiate any other trade rumors. Of course I do not read every paper/blog/website on the planet but so far....unless I missed something there has been nothing else. So what do we know for sure? Revis has now received a $1 million roster bonus. That some serious change. Considering how the draft works and the rookie cap that's SERIOUS change. $1 million is signing your 5th, 6th & 7th round draft picks. For the cash strapped NY Jets that some bucks. I don't know...taking off the green glasses and looking at this objectively....I can easily see the team taking a "wait and see" approach to the injury. Let him get into camp and see how the knee looks. Then we can talk extension. Let's face it...he HAS to go to camp after the injury. The gossipy girlymen, Cimini & Co., HAVE to write something. Whether it's true and based on facts is immaterial to them.
I think the issue is that by shopping him, the Jets are able to obtain an idea of his true market value both in picks and salary. The reality is that it doesn't matter what the Revis camp says about being paid Mario Williams money. It only matters if at least one team will pay it. The only way to determine that is to shop Revis and see what the market looks like. The gluttony of CBs on the market have driven down salary at the position. Plus as teams continue to deploy the spread, the value of one CB decreases while the value of depth throughout the DB corps increases. If market is depressed enough to the point where they can sign Revis long term, I can see them doing it while including hold-out protection. That being said, I personally believe the relationship is so poisoned that he is gone no matter what. The only issue is where & when the Jets trade him.
LOL!! :breakdance: Well, I wasn't really going down the conspiracy theory but really, if you think about it...Revis HAS to go to camp. He cannot hold out this year. Not with the injury...he'll never see a damn dime. The Jets would be smart to wait it out. So I've I'm a medium intelligent media person I HAVE to generate some kind of buzz. GREAT post!!!! Not sure about the relationship...there again, that is one of those things we will never really know about because we do not have reasonable reporters putting good stories to print. We can only speculate based off what we know.
No...what I'm saying is no one knows anything. To say that Woody just blatantly said "no, we're not paying Revis" is a pretty far stretch of the imagination...that's all. My biggest problem is we do not have ONE reputable writer to even remotely put half an ounce of trust in that what they are saying is true. So I just used my own common sense as to what I would do in the situation if I were the Jets F.O.
