As someone else said - a player is only worth what someone else is willing to pay - and I don't see many other teams beating down the Jets door to take on Revis and his salary demands.

I could live with a 1st and 3rd or 4th this year and a conditional pick based on playing time in 2014.

That someone else was wrong. There is no reason to move a player unless you get equivalent or better value for that player - regardless of what aome other team may say they are willing to offer - if its not enough you walk away, retain the player and move forward. Percy Harvin garnered a 1st, 7th and a mid rounder in 14. Idzik won't even consider a package that isn't better than what the Vikes got for Harvin.

then you get nothing for him at the end of the year... a year which the team has basically all but admitted is a rebuilding year.

you know what would be a big help in rebuilding? a second first round pick.

there are plenty of reasons not to trade him... the fact you dont think its fair is not a good reason.

he is an injured player in his final year who the team has decided is not part of the future...

Normally I would say you are right, but considering Revis wants $ that hurts the competitiveness of the team, the situation is far different.

You are correct, but equivalent or better value has to factor in Revis demands.
If he wants 14-16M or walk and we are not or should not agree to his demands, and with TB the only interested party then your value is diminished some. If Minnessota or SF are in the race then the value goes up. With just TB, If we get a 1st and 3rd we should jump with joy and move on. JMHO

What if Stephen Hill just completely schools him? Wouldn't that be great?

    Ok...

Selling a Ferrari - Asking price 100k (book value). The tranny is rebuilt, but it SHOULD run like before. You can only afford one more year of payments before the bank repos the car. However, you could afford to keep the car if you sold your home and lived in a trailer park next year.

Low and behold, you get an offer for 50k and a brand new Mustang , which is your only offer. No one else can afford the insane insurance and upkeep for such a fine vehicle. That said, that 50k will pay off what you owe, keep you in your home, and supply you with a replacement ride.

I suppose you would hold onto the Ferrari and take your chances on the trailer park?

If no one is willing to pay 100k, the vehicle isn't worth 100k. Market sets the value. You can't set the bar with Harvin, it's a different position. There were also rumors of other teams in the mix.

Wait. So your logic is if you can't get what you want then just keep him and pay him 15 or 20 million a year so he doesn't walk away? Do you see anything wrong in that?

I think it happens tomorrow or not at all (well before the draft at least). I just think they are going to need a few days to pass him medically and work out a contract. Late Sunday or early Monday only gives them 4 days before draft which doesn't seem like a lot to me.

if they have a deal in place with him for a contract they really dont need a ton of time. 3 days maybe. i mean all that has to happen is he has to fly down there and get checked by their doctors.

Ultimately TB doesn't wanna give up a 3rd pick in this draft and I think Idzik will take a 2014 5th round pick that can turn into a 4th if Revis gets this amount of snaps or makes a pro bowl type of incentive.

13th pick, 3rd round pick and a 2014 5th that can turn into a 4th is probably what the sides will strike an agreement on. Trade down from either 9 or 13 and acquire more picks and we got a lot of ammo to work with.

He could fly down Thursday morning and get fully checked out by their doctors. I don't get why people think they would need a bunch of time?

It's going to be interesting to see how this plays out. So far, both teams are playing chicken.

I think TB is leaking the info that they would be willing to give Revis the $15 mil, just to prevent the Jets from getting him signed to a more team friendly contract and staying with the Jets, in a way under-mining one of our biggest negotiating tactics.

What's the point of doing it? Jets are not planning to sign Revis for more than X. And not willing to trade for less than Y. The only thing this leak would do it to convince Revis he'd get his $$ in Tampa.
Preventing Jets to sign Revis would be pushing toward him being a FA, that's not something TB would want.

Sorry, I don't buy that it's just a bluff. TB really is willing to fork over the money.

If Alex Smith is worth a (early) 2nd, the best CB in football -- whether coming off an ACL injury or not -- is surely worth at least a 1st and 3rd.

Don't cave, Johnny. A '14 1st may be more valuable as ammunition to trade up for Bridgewater.

Did you watch Hill trying to cope with bump and run coverage and getting jammed at the line of scrimmage last year? He's the kind of WR Revis eats alive.

The guys Revis has issues covering are the elusive guys that you can't bottle up in the first 5 yards when you try.

It's a strategic move. As you say, the Jets are not going to sign him for more than X. If they let it out that they would be willing to go for X + $$, then Revis has no incentive to sign with the Jets for X. So now what would the GM do? Now, Revis won't sign for your price. And if he leaves, your highest reward is a 3rd round compensation pick. So now, the Jets have to make a decision. Do I go up from X in terms of paying him or go lower from Y in terms of trade compensation. What you said is exactly right, they are trying to force the Jets hand by steering him towards FA, because they know full well that we can't afford to let him go for FA and get practically nothing, nor can we afford to have a CB make elite QB money with our roster construction.

They may be willing to fork over the money, but they need the news out there so Revis' camp knows that the money will be there, and not sign a more team friendly deal than expected, due to a downturn in the CB market.

In essence, what they want to do is corner us to only have one option, which is to trade him. And if we do not have another option, then they gain the upper hand in negotiations because they hold more leverage in that case. The only danger then is some other team jumping in, and we're going to have to go the Boras way in baseball and start making up mystery team rumors.

If this was a straightforward deal, this would've been done weeks ago. Both sides are willing to stare each other down, and it'll be interesting to see who blinks first.

Harvin puts points on the board, Revis does not. We are offensively challenged on offense.
