I really don't think the Jets are going to trade Revis cheaply. I think you're right, if it goes into August the Jets will just be in training camp with Revis and the expectation will be that he plays the season for them. He does give Rex a somewhat better chance of avoiding a catastrophic result next season.
if TB wants Revis as bad as they say they do, they are gonna have to give up a boatload of picks. Revis makes the Buccs a SB contender. 2013: 1st and 4th 2014: 2nd and 3rd 2015: 3rd get it done
John Idzik spoke today. He can even say if Revis will be on team..... “I don’t like looking too far ahead,” Idzik said when asked whether Revis will be on the team by the start of the season. “I really don’t. Everyone’s anxious to know… We prepare for different things that could happen and we let things play out. I don’t like to get into speculation or the percentages or what’s your gut feel." Revis will never "just be on the roster" unless he is signed for long after this season ends. You say Idzik wants his first season to go smoothly and then show how it he could make it a complete disaster. If Revis is here without an extension the media won't let up for a single day.
Revis is a great talent. The best CB in the NFL by far. For Tampa Bay to be the only team involved proves the Jets are making the right move by not paying him so much.
well, the could have their wish of trading 2014 picks for him by waiting to make an offer after the draft. no one else seems to be in the mix
I tend to be sketpical of Freeman, but TB's management probably feels there is some chance he upgrades his game enough this coming year to get them to the level of adequate Qb play to make an SB run, given strengths elsewhere on their team. I just don't see Freeman doing that.
Meh. The variable you are leaving out is that less was known, and there are still no strong assurances, about Revis's health earlier this off season, as teams were making big roster decisions. TB is probably a unique case, despite what I have been saying about Freeman, of a team that probably does not have an SB shot without Revis, while several other teams think they do, and TB thinks Revis might get them over that hump and into the running. They also seem to have enough draft picks available to make a deal, while other teams who otherwise might be interested do not. And ofc course we don't konw what the "so much" number is at this point. What if the Jets can get him under contract for less than $12mil? Is that a good deal? There's too much else going on to say it is merely a case where the market says Revis is not worth "much".
Don Banks mock draft 9 Dee Milliner CB Alabama Jr.6-0201 Well, whaddya know. Maybe the Jets' luck is changing, because here sits the draft's top-rated cornerback, which makes it quite clear in that sign-from-God sort of way that they're supposed to trade you-know-who to Tampa Bay and get on with the business of trying to annoy the Patriots. Don't worry, Rex-heads. Barkevious Mingo might still be in your future. 13 Barkevious Mingo DE/OLB LSU Sr.6-4241 Acquired from Buccaneers. We're still projecting the Bucs and Jets to make the Darrelle Revis trade before the No. 13 selection comes around -- pause buttons can be un-pressed at a moment's notice, you know -- with New York coming out of the first round with both its new starting corner in Milliner and the play-making Mingo. I don't think even a Jets fan could figure out a way to boo that draft-night maneuver. Read More: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/nfl/news/20130417/2013-nfl-mock-draft-6/#ixzz2QklzOJOu No Don. The Jets fans would boo. The Jets get those players at #9 and #13. Revis can go fuck himself. The Jets are getting better than the 13th pick in the draft? TB is the only bidder. Revis wants a ton of money. If you paid any attention, teams were not handing out big money deals this off-season. Where are the other bidders? The Jets are going to keep Revis and see how he comes back before re-signing him. What happens if he gets hurt again or struggles returning from the ACL?Then what are you going to do. Let him walk? Brilliant strategy. Trade him. Get the young asset(s) signed to affordable rookie scale/wage/cap dollars. The Jets will get a very good player at #13. Let Tampa worry about paying Revi$ $50M guaranteed and $15M annually.
yes they will. they keep asking the same questions and get "no comment" they will stop. revis can't say anything because he has to maintain the good soldier attitude or risk being labeled a malcontent. (his rrep is already shaky with his holdout history). so after a week of "no comment" the beat guys would give up or risk looking like an idiot
Nah..they won't stop, all the articles will be what they could have gotten and how they blew it..remember they already say the Jets have not taken the 13th plus a 3rd and a 6th..whether it is true or not makes no difference as they say it is..as far as looking like idiots that has never stopped them before..all they care about is selling papers(or ads..or whatever they are selling where they work).
Agree with Don, they won't stop. They can't stop. A no comment can lead to a speculation story. Not asking can't lead to a story. I personally think all these "sources" about Revis or his agents trying to push the Jets into giving big money. But that might be the negative nancy in me shining
Just want to point out that details regarding discussions between two teams + the player's party is much more likely to be leaked than the information regarding low tier FA negotiations that have been happening around the Jets this offseason. The Jets have done a good job of keeping their pie holes shut this offseason but this is a different ball game. I don't think that the closer we get to the season the worse the Jets leverage gets, either. They have him on contract, he's got to play in NY or his contract becomes indentured servitude. There is a chance they can work out a new deal during the season or offer a competitive contract among the suitors in next year's FA period. Also, there's a strong likelihood the cornerback market depreciates more next offseason.
I know dollars matter more to him than anything else but I can't imagine any circumstance where he returns to the Jets if he is forced to play out this season on his current deal. Whether true or not he will perceive that the Jets kept him from a long term 15mil/yr deal with TB. For that reason alone he will never come back but on top of that I can't see why on earth the Jets would be the highest bidder for an aging CB next year while still rebuilding. I can see them spending a lot on a QB that they will build around but a CB? I don't see it.
the thing is, in august there will be actual football stories to write. we will have a qb competition, rookies and rex talking everyday. most of the writers will turn their attention to other things if they are not being given any info. idzick can control this by putting a gag order on all things revis related off the field.
