Good for them both. Revis gets another huge pile. The Pats need to start making moves before the window slams shut on the Brady era. Its a good move for them, but honestly, I'd be more worried if they were spending their money on offensive playmakers for him. Revis, as great as he is, has been on some seriously shitty teams, as we know all too well. He's a very nice complementary part. He's not the savior.
I don't see that he is any huge upgrade over Talib, he may be better but there is not some huge divide there. So they spend a little off the cap, maybe piss off a few players that maybe renegotiated a little lower for the team to be able to pick up some other players previously. Other teams may not throw toward Revis as much as they would Talib but there is still a whole lot of room to throw the ball.
Too funny. If Revis was still a Jet last year and Pats fans came here claiming Talib was as good or nearly as good, the Jet fans here, certainly the homers, would be outraged at such an assertion.
He wasn't saying the Pats do it perfect at all. He was calling bullshit on your assertion that it didn't bother you one bit that Revis joined the Pats. Just like it would be bullshit if big Vince leaves the Pats and signs with the Jets (not likely I know) and I said it didn't bother me at all....
If they go deep into the playoffs next season they'll more than likely have to play Denver at some point. Belichick obviously noticed how Manning torched his secondary repeatedly in the AFCCG before getting embarrassed by Seattle's.

07:25 AM ET 03.14 | While a reference to "Me-vis" crackled through Boston sports radio Thursday morning, news of the signing was greeted well across New England, but it comes with a twist. Darrelle Revis' contract turned out to be more complicated than originally expected. Late Wednesday night, the deal was reported as a one-year, $12 million agreement, which remains true in principle. But in reality, the contract was filed as a two-year deal worth $32 million, and the second season is a team option that must be exercised by the final day of the 2014 league year. ... In 2015, Revis would earn a $12 million roster bonus April 1, $7.5 million base salary and another $500,000 games-played roster bonus. That cap hit is a whopping $25 million, which essentially means Revis won't play the 2015 season under those terms. Old news. We knew that yesterday morning. His cap hit this year is $7mil. It's a $5mil cap hit next year if he walks. This just buys time to work on a long term deal or decide to part ways.
Year 2 of the deal serves a few purposes. 1.) Franchise Tag protection for Revis 2.) Cap management for the Patriots 3.) Revis gets his 16m/yr average, even if its a facade 4.) Time to work out a long term deal Rumor is that Revis wanted to be a Patriot in 2012, but the Jets smartly traded him away, Tampa however, not so smartly gave him a series of 1 year deals, Revis had a way out. New management, bad scheme fit, Revis gained complete leverage, sabotaged any trade attempt by refusing to talk new deal with the Browns and Raiders, he gets cut, becomes a Patriot hours later. If that rumor is true, I see year 1 as a "feeling out" period as many have called it, Revis and the Pats see how they like each other with it strongly believed that he will sign a long term extension before next off season begins, providing security for both sides.
You were the one who said "Which indicates to me that they have clear plans for the cap space they have this year." I asked on what that is based. I know the calendar just as well as you. I did not say they don't have a plan, don't know what they are doing. I think it remains to be seen whether or not they have a good plan. I was just wondering why you think doing nothing so far other than signing Decker means they have a good plan for htis off season.
if the idea is to use the abundance of cap space this season to lock up our young players so in a few years the cap space can be used on (hopefully) top tier free agents (rather than B and C level free agents this season) and without concern for existing talent, than we will all be singing Idzik's praises.
