Brady with a lot of time to throw = very very bad. One thing that is basic in regard to matchups is if Brady has loads of time to throw we are screwed.
It does not look like this will happen. Revis will be on Moss according to Rex: Rex Ryan: "Only one guy in this league can cover Randy Moss. And that's Darrelle Revis." » By Manish Mehta Randy Moss admittedly spent his offseason making sure he stayed off Revis Island, but the Patriots all-world wide receiver will be matched up against his nemesis in Week 2. Darrelle Revis was his typical impenetrable self on Monday night - he didn’t give up a catch against the Ravens - but he’ll certainly be tested this Sunday. “There’s only one guy in this league that can cover Randy Moss,” Rex Ryan told The Daily News. “And that’s Darrelle Revis. Nobody else.” While Ryan moved Revis around quite a bit in his first game action after his 36-day holdout, there’s no secret who he’ll be shadowing this week. “It’s obvious when we play New England who he’s going to match up with,” Ryan said. Ryan disagreed with the suggestion that covering Moss would be an easier assignment for Revis than trying to track down the shifty Anquan Boldin last night. “I don’t know about that,” Ryan said. “Randy Moss beats you for touchdowns. Randy Moss is a stud. Him & Chad Johnson, you better double them. Well, we don’t have to. That’s what Revis brings for us.” Revis, of course, turned Moss into a non-factor in both games last year. Moss and Bill Belichick intimated that Revis had safety help at times, a notion that Ryan shrugged off and disagreed with last season. Covering Welker will require you having to make numerous openfield tackles. I'd much rather have Wilson doing this, than Cro.
i like the idea of revis on welker. simply because welker is more of a rhythm guy for brady. putting your best guy on welker could interrupt brady more than putting him on moss...i think.
Does anybody remember the 2008 game against NE? I think Mangini is an idiot, but he did gameplan this one properly. He signed Ty Law OFF THE street to cover Randy Moss in that game, and he was a complete non-factor in the game outside of one play, where Cassel made a perfect throw against pretty damn good coverage to send it to overtime. Remember what Ty Law did? He was put on the line of scrimmage to bump the hell out of Moss get in his head and screw up every single route he ran that day. How did we make sure he didnt get beaten like a drum? Safety help (and some LB help on short routes) on every single play. 3 receptions for 26 yards. Want to know what we did to Welker? Revis covered him all day long, and Welker still got his, 7 receptions 108 yards. So my point is Moss can be neutralized by getting in his head. He plays soft, he is used to not be beaten physically all day, and he shuts it down when you do that. Welker is always the benificiary of everybody worrying about Moss (for good reason of course) and he just is the pats running game, and shutting him down, means shutting down their rythm and basically their entire offense. I have faith you can put cro on Moss and every play tell him to pop him in the chest as hard as he can, then release and cover him and let him know he has safety help rolled to him on every play, that way he doesnt need to worry about holding and PI's if he gets beaten. Also you can't put cro on welker, Welker is way to shifty and if you try zero coverage with welker, he will torch cro, and the penalties will compile, which will lead to a terrible season for Cro. Who suggested Wilson as an option? A rookie on Wes Welker? we all love wilson but come on guys... Wilson clearly just isnt ready yet to try and cover welker. That said, against Baltimore he was being beaten over the top more so than on the short stuff, so he might fair better with the play in front of him. But to think he can keep welker from big numbers is kinda asking a bit much don't you think? Next somebody will point out, well Welker still got his in 2008 against Revis, so why risk it with Moss when we know Revis can cover him? Because Revis jumped up into another world of good in 2009, in 2008 he was still developing into the best defensive player in the NFL, and now he is ready to handle Welker. of course all of this is a moot point, since Revis will be soloed on Moss all day Sunday anyways, Rex already said it.
I understand, but sometimes we are very much too predictable. I remember a game last year.. I believe the Cardinals against the 49ers? 49ers kept on blitzing Warner, and he was ripping them apart. They then rushed 3, or 4 and sent the rest into coverage. Warner couldn't do shit. Just saying if the Blitzing is not working we should switch it up, and send 4-5 instead of bringing the house.
sure he isnt brady, but you know what, he still threw for 400 yards that day, and set a patriots record for most rushing yards in a game, since the 1960's. He set an NFL record for being the first guy (and to my knowledge, still the only guy) to throw for 400+ yards, and run for 60 yards in a game. This was easily Cassel's best game of his entire life, Brady couldn't have done it a whole hell of a lot better himself. So yeah, cassel torched us that day, and yet he couldnt find randy moss at all. Jabar Gaffney and Ben Watson were the guys who got us, with 80+ yards each, to go with Welker's 108. So are you telling me you wouldn't rather have that outcome, forcing the #3 receiver (Edelman) or the TE(Gronkowski, who is a rookie!) to beat us than Welker/Moss? My big point, is that Cro can cover Moss with safety help, he can not cover welker. Revis can cover either guy, and Wilson can handle Edelman. So either you allow Welker to destroy us (anybody remember the 180 yard ass reaming he gave us last year?) or you let Cro cover Moss, and Revis shut welker down. Cro on Welker will be a disaster, I think its a very very bad idea to put him on Welker, if you think he had trouble sticking to Boldin, yikes. Like i said, its a moot point, Rex said Revis on Moss so thats the way it will be. Hopefully Welker doesnt destroy us again this time around...
Cro can't cover Welker. It'll be Wilson and a safety. Probably Smith so he can knock the shit out of him. Welker has rehabbed well, but I still expect a few hits to knock him off his game.
Capable of what? Getting burned? We saw how an old Todd Heap made Leonard look horrible Monday night.
I would have Revis on Welker in their 2 WR sets with Cro getting help over top. Revis on Moss, Wilson on Welker and Cro on whoever the 3rd WR is when they go 3 wide. Basically under no scenario should Welker be lined up against Cro. He is way too shifty for Cro who does not get in and out of breaks very well.
