What are his options? Sitting out the final 2 years of his contract and leaving millions of dollars on the table? The far fetched scenario of finding a team willing to pay him 16 mill a year and THEN that team and the jets agreeing to an extremely expensive trade package? The "crying to the media" ploy only works for so long. It's only a matter of time till the fans and media turn on him. Then what leverage does he have?
Lose him? No, we still have the franchise tag at our disposal after the rest of this contract plays out. What may happen is the other guys may not wanna negotiate with the team because of what is perceived to be a terrible negotiating attitude taken by Tanny and the FO.
If he's unwilling to sign, trade him straight up for Asomugha, with a clause that if they renegotiate his deal before he plays it out or they trade him we get two first rd picks. The Raiders will take a 3 year for one Swap. Let's see what he thinks he's worth after playing out his rookie deal, and being on that team for 3 years.
Actually...it's a decent analogy.....outside of holding out for the entire season, Revis' options are quite limited as to what he can do. It's well known with the threat of a lockout and with all the moves the Jets made this offseason, a reasonable assumption by any football fan could be made that the Jets are going "all in" for a superbowl berth......the thought of losing Revis or Mangold to a holdout during the regular season could be catastrophic in the eyes of the FO. I believe that's what Revis will hang his hat on.
You don't want to front load Revis' contract, because in 3-4 years when he's earned the majority of his 6 year deal, he'll want another extension.
This is one of the reasons coaches dont BRAG and tell there players "YOURE THE BEST CORNER IN THE NFL!" "You do no wrong!" If my boss told me I was the best employee in the world I would expect to be paid the best then too.
Besides looking like an asshole and losing $1 million, whats the consequence of him just deciding not to play this year? I'm sure him and his agent both probably feel like it's not worth the wear and tear on his body, as well as injury risk, for $1 million when his market value is easily $12 million plus.
He loses a productive year in the prime of his career. Revis is too much of a competitor not to play regular season games.
I thought I read somewhere that if any players misses out on any significant time whether it be in training camp, or the regular season, that this year will be considered a lost or unproductive year, and an extra year will be tacked on to their current contract.
How are the Jets going to "lose" Revis? He's got THREE years left on his contract at this point at the end of which time he'll be 28 and the Jets might choose not to go all in on a huge contract anyway. My point on the 6 year old vs Revis is that both of them have nowhere to go and nothing to do but pout at this point. That's just what it is. Yes, the Jets increase their chances of losing Revis in three years if they don't sign him now, but that was always true. They increase their chances of losing Nick Mangold THIS season if they don't get him signed. That's the priority.
Revis was recognized league-wide that he was the best cover corner in the game right now. Ryan's praises really holds lil' to no say in negotiations. Technically, the real "braggin" u speak of came straight out of Oakland.
If he wants to be the highest paid corner in the league, give him $100k more than Aso'. Problem solved.
like ive said 239047834 times, revis does NOT deserve significantly more than the contract demarcus ware signed, not even a year ago if he wants to be the highest paid defesive player in the league, thats the contract they need to use as a point of reference, not aso's
The Jets can't do this. If they give Revis a 16 million dollar a year deal they will have established that figure as the going rate for a topflight CB and all the other players they need to deal with will be looking at that moving forward. Re-sign Cromartie? Hey no problem, just give me 12 million a year since Revis and Aso are worth 16. Re-sign Wilson in 3 years? Hey, I'll take the 16 cuz I'm that good. Cornerback is not a 16 million dollar a year job, even if you're the best cornerback in football. Al Davis is an idiot. He specifically said he'd pay Asomugha the average of the top 5 QB contracts in football and that's where they came up with the number. There's no cornerback in history that's had half the impact a quarterback does on whether or not games are won or lost. There's no cornerback in the NFL who should be paid more than about half the value of the best quarterback contract. That's just what it is. When Darrelle Revis touches the ball 25-30 times a game it'll make sense for the Jets to consider paying him like that.
Don't pay him Asomugha money. No CB is worth that much. Would offer him what the next highest paid CB gets.
