The Aso contract runs through 2011. The big money extension was 2009-2010-2011. That's when the market will likely be set again, either by other people getting the big money that Aso got beforehand or by his next contract not being so large. The next point at which the CB salary scale gets set is either next off-season, if somebody other than Aso or Revis gets a huge deal, or after 2011 when the Aso deal is up. There are already indications that Al Davis thinks he made a mistake, he's been trying to trade Aso this spring with no success at all.
As I understand it the clause in his contract that prevents the Jets from retaining him using the franchise or transition tags also prevent them from retaining him as a restricted free agent. They negotiated away the right to retain his services, as they are allowed to do under the CBA, in return for gaining the right to buy two more years of his services at fixed prices. The franchise tag is an abomination, it really should be done away with at this point. You can argue that the salary cap is a necessary evil to maintain overall competitive balance, however the franchise tag is just an unnecessary hindrance on an individual player's ability to move after he has fulfilled the terms of his contract.
I've been saying it all along that Revis is aking for $16mil, but he'll settle for around 12-13mil a yr contract. If his starting point is $16 mil, he can easily come down to around 12mil a year plus a few hard earned incentives.
That's my point. Behind the Aso deal, the market is 10 mil per. (and Aso is not on board for 2011..he gets QB Franchise, 16.875 or UFA for 2011)
