With so many crucial players hitting their RFA status and a few set to become UFAs next season(if there is one) now is the time to talk contract extensions. I'm sure that once Revis' contract is done, we will start hearing about Mangold and Brick getting theirs.
correct me if i'm wrong...but isn't there a clause in Revis' contract stating he can void the final 2 years if he reaches certain incentives? Wasn't this the reason why they haggled for so long during TC in his rookie year? if that's the case.....that's why you redo his deal now.
That would be correct. His six year deal became a four year deal when he played 75% of the defensive snaps. He has one year remaining and "massive labor strife" is not the best context for resigning your best players.
tough to sign a guy with 3 years left, he will be commanding a great deal of money no matter what. this team will be difficult to keep together over the next few years with guys like mangold and ferguson and revis and gholston coming do.... did i say that, hehe yes i did. ahh that made my day. seriously though its going to get tough to sign everyone at some point... we have a number of guys who have proven to be top notch talent and are going to want some pretty big 2nd contracts.
great point, i had forgotten about that. we wanted him for 6 he wanted 5 i think you might be right on what they settled for. hopefully someone can confirm that. if that is the case then its a no brainer to sign him for as long as possible at this point. then you pray he doesnt get injured.
man, Where do they get all the money from to pay this kind of contract? Wish I can earn $100k a year!
Tannenbaum fought like hell to get Revis to sign a six year rookie deal. I doubt he did that just so he could have the pleasure of tearing that deal up halfway through. As I recall, what they ended up with was a five year deal that voided to four, with a team option to buy back years five and six at a higher pay grade. As I recall, the fifth and sixth years of Revis's deal were pretty rich as a result of those negotiations, so I don't think he has anything to be too unhappy about. The only way the Jets make a move for an extension now is if they get him at a discount, like the Eagles do with their young players. Otherwise, he's at least a year away from an extension, and more likely two or three years away.
that's what i figured....thanks for verifying, Cato. Obviously Revis will void the last 2 years...he'd be stupid not to. Tanny better lay down one of Woody's blank checks and hand it over. Letting this kid hit the market would be devastating.
I made a minor mistake with the details on Revis' contract. The deal still voids the final two years, however the threshold was much smaller than I originally said: -From Cimini via thejetsblog.com Source. The Jets could by him back for cheaper than what he is seeking, but the final year of the contract would expire during the lockout. A contract extension after this season is the best route to keeping him in green and white for the rest of his career.
regardless.....Tanny needs to lock this guy up, whatever the cost. I normally don't "mark" for a lot of players when their contracts are up...but Revis is special and a cornerstone of this defense.....as we all know quite well.
Are you missing the part about buying back years five and six? Because it's in there. Thats why Revis got a better deal than his slot dictated, the Jets were adamant about getting six years, so they paid extra for it. They wouldn't pay extra for a sixth year and then agree to an option that would void it to four based on playing time incentives they knew he'd meet pretty much immediately, thats just self-defeating. Revis is halfway through a six year deal.
Sure, it's much better to have him for three more seasons and let the price up even more than $14million/year than having him locked up for double that.
This is Revis contract (the one he has now): http://www.nyjetscap.com/darrellerevis.html While I understand those saying we should wait a couple years to renew the contract there are some reasons to do it now: 1) Whenever he re-signs he is going to get a HUGE bonus.... might as well get done with it in an uncapped year. 2) Offering a player with 3 years left on a contract a new one is a sign of good will and is always appreciated by the player 3) The team has more leverage because the worst that can happen is that the player stays on it's actual deal 4) It sends a message to the team... you play elite? we give you cash straight away. It also tells them who is the leader of the D. I don't agree with those saying if we wait more he's going to ask for more... D players don't get more than 15 mill a season, and he'd already be getting 14!
thats all fine, but if locking him up in an uncapped year is better for the future of the team then of course tanny is gonna lock him up. revis' contract must have been made with the current cba in mind, perhaps now tanny seeing a more beneficial move in making the deal now? it is also important to consider that tanny had no way of knowing revis would be considered the best cover corner in football in only 3 years. that changes the dynamics of trying to hold him onto in the future.
