Gotcha and yea its not even close really. Nnamdi is a much better zone corner and Revis plays almost entirely man to man. I forget the Rex quote but its like when someone says he is a zone corner it means he can't play corner.
It's so hard to compare CBs since the rules changed... Deon and Charles Woodson are more in the "playmakers" group, Revis is a shutdown corner. You can't really compare them. Just like it's hard to compare a QB that relies on arm strength and one that relies on pin point accuracy... according to the style of football you want to play you'll need one or the other. In the Jets D though, where there's so much emphasis on CBs being put 1-1 with WRs Ill' take Revis all day long. In another system maybe I'd go for Deon.
You can't make a full comparison until Revis career is over. However as of rt now he's neck and neck with Deon. Deon def had more spectacular plays, but Revis def has the better overall ability bcuz Deon couldn't tackle a cold.
Deon also shut down his receiver. He had better over all speed and often used it to bait qb's to his side only to close in and make the pick. Saying deon was more of a playmaker than a shut down corner is a bad joke. He was the shut down corner of his day and no one was close. The only knock against him was his horrible run support. Great corner who played the run like a bitch. Revis covers like deon and plays better in the run game. He also seems to not be getting enough credit for his work with the ball in his hands. It was just last year he took a pick back 100 yards for a score. He may not have the flashy rep, but he can make plays when given the chance. Between the two it comes down to personal preference. Both rank as all time great cover men, both elite skills to locate the ball in the air, make the play on it and with the ball after they have it. Sanders brings more pure speed and the return role he took part time. Revis is much more physical in both coverage and run support.
Sanders was very good in coverage but not as good as Revis is. Yes, he did do some baiting to get some INT's but he wasn't going to go out and just smother a #1 receiver like Revis does on the regular. Jerry Rice used to own Sanders on a fairly regular basis. Yea, I know Rice is the best ever, but look what Revis has done against the best of todays game WITHOUT being able to mug the receivers physically like Deion could.
It's too early to put Revis in a best db of all time debate. Furthermore, are you guys all to young to remember the Darrell Green?
Green was a nice CB but overrated. He was somewhere between Aaron Glenn and Revis but more closer to Glenn. Green played 20 years and for two Super Bowl champions and was the fastest man in the league for a while. From all that he got overrated.
Yeah really overrated! 2 Superbowls and the top db in the league for 15 of those years. We should all hope Revis has that type of career!
Was posting from my phone before. I'm now at a PC so I can be more thorough. In your first post you essentially wrote that Green deserves consideration for best DB of all-time. Absolutely no way on that. As for him being overrated- yeah, exactly. Two Super Bowl wins helped cause it. The "fastest player in the league" tag also helped. I am not saying Green was Aaron Beasley. He was a very nice CB who played for a top team for half his career and twice he played for the Super Bowl-winning team. Green had all sorts of problems with Michael Irvin. In the 1990s Green was good. He was not great. In the 1980s he was exceptional. But still, look how many times he was a first team All-Pro. Not many times. ". . . the top db in the league for 15 of those years. . ." Really?
Deion "wasn't all that"? Come on man...he's widely regarded as the best corner of all time lol. It's really tough to say whether or not Revis is better at this point in time, but I'd have to say no. That might change once Revis' career is over. The thing about Deion was that he was so damn athletic, quick, and fast that he would literally let guys get open just so that the QB would throw the ball to them, then zip in front of the pass and pick it off. I haven't seen much of that from Revis even though he consistently stops the pass from being completed. Turnovers are huge though. Deion would start celebrating from the 40 yard line sometimes on kick/punt/interception returns and would still be outrunning people as he celebrated, that's how fast he was. Plus he had some of the best hands of any player I've ever seen, much less a cornerback. I'm as big a Revis homer as anyone, hell he's in my username and in my avatar, but Deion was a better cornerback at this point. Turnovers are one of the biggest indicators of wins and losses in football, Deion was insanely good at getting them and making the most of them.
Deion might well be the best athlete of all time. He was an exceptional corner as well. I would post an article comparing Deion's 1994 DPOY season to Revis' 2009 season, but it was posted in a place that is completely taboo here. People say Deion's 1994 year was the best season ever by a corner. The author makes a hell of a claim that Revis 2009 campaign was better than Deion's 1994 season, but it was the best season by a CB (from a shutting down opponents standpoint) of all time. edited: Deion won the award in 1994, not 1996.
1996? You probably mean 1994. That was the year Sanders won the award. That was his year in San Francisco. Sanders in '94 and Revis in '09 were the two best cornerback seasons I have seen.
