This is partly why I think that Revis' number should come down. That contract artificially inflated Asomugha's contract numbers. There is no way in hell that a competent front office actually gives someone a contract like that.
I would consider 10mil a reasonable start for negotiations. An insulting lowball would be a lot less than that. If Revis thought that a wheeler and dealer like Tannenbaum was going to start off negotiations at 15mil a year, he is deluded.
From my understanding, that is incorrect... in that the final 2 years of Revis's deal were voided? or can be voided by the player? And no way he accepts 12mil a year. No way...
from my understanding, the last 2 years of his contract were "voided", but the jets can still buy them back for about $20M
The final years were voided, but the Jets have the option to buy back the final 2 years at $5 million and $15 million, respectively. And you're probably right about $12 million, but Tanny is smart and knows that he has the upper hand in these negotiations. We can have him under contract for an average of $7 million a season for the next 3 years, and then franchise tag him in 2013 (at say $16 million). That would essentially be a 4-year contract at $9.25 million a year. For the Jets to sign Revis, it would have to be a 5-6 year extension for it to make sense for the Jets. I don't see why the Jets would pay $16+ million a season over 5-6 years just to keep him for an extra year or two with so many other players needing deals.
One thing I don't get... ok so Revis wants a 16 mill per year deal... but what he doesn't get is that he is still undercontract for this season at 1 mill and next season 8... 1 season at 1 mill + 5 seasons at 16 = 81 mill over 6 season... that's 13.5 per year. 6 seasons at 14-15 (the max I'd give him) = 84 - 90 mill. If he wants a 16+ mill deal he'll have to wait until next year because the Jets are doing him a BIG favor in trying to re-do his contract this year. He should also understand Asomugha got that money because he had to play on a crappy team... if Revis prefers to earn 17 mill per year while playing for the Lions then he is an idiot. If you want to play in a competitive team you have to understand you can't take all the money in the world.
Yes, a built-in insurance plan that gives them leverage in table talks. I would guess that this is the last resort for Tanny, though. All of that money is guaranteed and would be hard to deal with in 2011 and 2012 with a new cap.
I just don't think tanny is stupid enough to offer much lower than that. Obviously details are sketchy right now but if Tanny did promise to make him the highest paid CB and then turned around and offered 10 million a year i could see him being pissed, but I tend to think Revis being pissed is just a way to put some pressure on the Jets.
Revis is basically under contract for the next 3 years at $21 million. Offer him $21 million per year for the next 4 years after those initial 3, and you have a total contract of $105 million over 7 years... equaling $15 million per year. Obviously this includes a huge signing bonus with the rest of the money spread out over the 7 years. It's a ton of money to pay a CB for sure, but that sure ensure that the Jets D stays legit for years to come. I can't imagine Revis turning down $ like that when push come to shove.
Agreed. On top of that Revis is a leader. If he holds out in camp that gives a green light for other players to do the same thing.
Looking back.. weren't Kendall, Baker, Coles and Leon actually loooking for TOO MUCH MONEY in terms of what their talent level was? I'n happy we didn't give big money to any of those guys because with the next contract they got they proved they weren't worth it. PS Leon is the exception, talent-wise, but the injury has to weigh in the evaluation process.
I agree about the idea of Revis sitting out of OTAs to put pressure on them, but I wouldn't call Tanny stupid for offering lower than 10. He's more bold than stupid. In the end, Revis may end up taking less than Asomugha money and feel like he came out a winner, for the sole reason that Tanny initially wasn't looking to pay near that much. It's a staring match.
PPS I'll go out on a limb and say it... I think even Jesus Christ himself (the real one) isn't worth more than 15 mill if playing CB... the ONLY position that can be paid that much is QB. (Of course I mean with a salary cap... without one I'm cool with Revis getting whatever he wants.
I don't see how Tanny would offer less than what Aso is making. It doesn't matter how ridiculous that contract is. Players get paid more than the last guy in this league.
I guess it would be a fine line between bold and stupid. Obviously sitting out is to put pressure on the Jets, what I was getting at is that somebody in the Revis camp is purposely leaking out his feelings of this being like the Kendall situation to get us worried about this going to shit. If he can get enough fans to kick and scream that he should get whatever he wants it would be a good negotiating tool for his side.
No one in the right mind should be giving ANY CB more then 14-15 a year that is insane! We got Mangold whose thinking of holding out, Harris, and a selection of 1 year players that may get paid. It's complete and utter BS All this shit is making me mad What we can do is pull an Haynesworth and give him a front loaded contract for this year since it's uncapped, that would be an excellent option, Woody's gotta open up that checkbook completely now, since it's all about the money
Well if this actually goes all the way to training camp (which I doubt) then it'll be a televised fight. I don't think Tanny wants to be negotiating with a camera crew in his face 24/7, while HBO's filming Revis on a beach laughing.
Could someone tell me what the 30 percent rule is for? I don't see it helping anyone as FOs are hamstrung and players aren't getting the money they want/deserve.
